UK wedding magazine review on English Wedding blog
FEATURED

I hope you’ve been enjoying the summer sunshine today – this weeks’ little blog review is a little later than normal because it’s been such a lovely day! So – time for a quick recap on the last week and today I’m sharing some of the best little goodies I’ve bookmarked from around the web this week.

Last week on the English Wedding blog

  • Wedding magazines: introduction, the wedding magazine review, and a look at individual wedding magazines. These articles were written to help brides and grooms decide which wedding magazine is best for you, and to provide a useful resource for anyone – businesses included – with questions about the UK wedding press. To find out what this is all about, start here!
  • UK wedding magazine review on English Wedding blog
A few comments asked what the point of this review was, so I’ve tried to reiterate my reasons for writing about the wedding press: it’s not just to make up for previous bad behaviour(!) – I intended this as a useful reference and if there’s just one person out there who shares my geeky curiosity about wedding mags who enjoys reading these, then I’m happy!
UK Brides magazine cover

The biggest UK wedding magazine, Brides came joint second in my review and comparison of the best UK wedding magazines. With a whopping (love that word!) 394 pages it’s also one of the most expensive, but has some good content.

Brides magazine: a review

Issue compared: March / April 2011
Cover price: £4.99

  • 394 pages
  • 12 pages of real weddings
  • 24 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 13 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 93 pages of product ideas
  • 252 pages of advertisements
  • 64% of the magazine pages are ads

UK Brides magazine coverBrides magazine has more pages than any other so there is plenty of varied content, and the magazine looks great and feels expensive.

The articles inside are very good, in depth and compelling to read. Advice where it’s given is comprehensive and genuinely useful – it goes further than many other wedding magazines.

A Vera Wang interview which ran across six full pages makes this a very memorable wedding magazine. The quality of the interview and feature was really high, and for this reason Brides stood out as one of the best UK wedding magazines.

It’s been busy busy on the blog this week!

I’ve been looking into technology in weddings! I found this picture on Twitter:

I’m a bit of a Facebook addict and this is so me! My friends have warned me not to update my Facebook status at the altar!

But it got me thinking about how technology can enhance a wedding, especially if you have guests who can’t make the wedding but still want to be involved. Or, if you’re in Japan or America, you can even be married by a robot!

My recent blog post was an introduction to technology, more coming later.

I’ve also been looking at the entertainment for weddings. DJ or band is the focus. There are huge benefits of having a DJ and a band, so how does a girl choose? I’ve tried to look into all the positives and negatives for both to give a well rounded opinion of both. I’ve also discussed what I chose and why.

Real wedding at Dartmouth Castle by Martyn NorsworthyPhew… I think it’s time for a gorgeous wedding today, don’t you? Something to enjoy, smile, admire and swoon a little for.

Martyn Norsworthy fits the bill – an award winning wedding photographer based in gorgeous Devon, he sent me photographs from Maria and Lloyd’s dreamy Dartmouth Castle wedding and I settled back to swoon over these very special moments, images and more from a stunning wedding day.

I really think you’ll love these pictures: half wedding story and half inspiring details with a gorgeous bride in an Ian Stuart wedding dress – this is right up my street for creativity, glamour and elegance!

Setting the scene… Maria and Lloyd went for a vintage inspired theme with a beautifully mixed bridal bouquet and sparkling jewellery.

And for me there’s nothing more exciting than an Ian Stuart wedding dress. I mean wow… the extravagant detailing is just amazing.

Wherever you are and whatever your plans – festival-goers, tennis fans and brides and grooms – I wanted to wish you all a lovely weekend.

I have that Friday feeling: I’ve just finished a calligraphy commission, I’m surrounded by papery ideas to play with over the weekend, and there’s a bottle of wine and a little Galaxy bar waiting for me in the fridge.*

If you’re in or near Yorkshire and looking for a wedding photographer, why not enter this fab competition to Win Your Wedding Photography?! First seen on Blue Lights Photo’s website, the competition is still open for couples to enter until 30th June 2011… over to Adele to tell you more about entering the competition:

Who are Blue Lights Photography?

Blue Lights Photography is a female, Award Winning Wedding Photographer from Barnsley, covering the Yorkshire area and beyond. Run by Adele, she specialises in making images to treasure forever. Also a finalist for a Wedding Ideas award within her first year of business, you can be sure of a great service.

Why are you running the competition?

Adele is running the competition to enable couples getting married from 1st October to 31st March to WIN their Wedding Photography. Adele believes that everyone should have images to treasure forever and most people who get married in the winter months do so because they want to either have a beautiful winter wedding or their budget will not stretch to an in-season wedding.

As I’ve said before, I’m a complete sucker for sentiment. Every day I wear my engagement ring, my mum’s silver ring that she bought when she was a girl, the ring David bought me for my 21st, and the earrings he bought me from Italy. Until it recently broke, I also used to wear my great grandmother’s ring that she brought back from Russia for my grandma (who said it was hideous, which is why I have it!). None of them ‘go’, they are all different metals, stones, styles… but I have to wear all of them on my wedding day! The way I see it is I am wearing a piece of jewellery from each corner of my family, and the sentiment means so much more than having everything ‘matchy-matchy’.

You and Your Wedding UK magazine review
FEATURED

You & Your Wedding came out top in my comparison of UK wedding magazines. With top quality features, shoots and advice for brides (and a nod to grooms!) this would be the wedding magazine I’d buy above all the others.

You & Your Wedding magazine: a review

Issue compared: May / June 2011
Cover price: £4.99

  • 284 pages
  • 24 pages of real weddings
  • 18 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 9 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 81 pages of product ideas
  • 152 pages of advertisements
  • 54% of the magazine pages are ads

UK wedding magazine review You and Your WeddingArticles in You & Your Wedding magazine are beautifully written, sensitive and interesting. For example, ‘Clamour for Glamour’ talked about a bride’s decision not to wear make up on her wedding day. It was a really positive piece of writing and won me over for putting across an alternative opinion.

Through the magazine advice features with input from Penny Cullen (Tigerlily) and Mark Niemierko kept the inspiring ideas coming – and they were different ideas which appealed to me: creative and imaginative.

Properly objectively analysed, pages counted and compared with other top UK wedding mags… The best UK wedding magazine is You & Your Wedding. With the best quality content, valuable advice, inspirational and exciting shoots and comparing well for every criteria I considered – You & Your Wedding magazine is far and away the best UK wedding magazine for brides.

I’ve been poring over wedding magazines for you recently – up to my elbows in wedding dress ads and waking up in the mornings with the handbag-sized mags stuck to my face… terrible habit of reading last thing at night!

Why? Because I have too many preconceptions about wedding magazines and I really wanted to rediscover and reevaluate the wedding mags for myself. Are they really all the same? Are they all old fashioned? Well… no. I’m glad to say I was wrong on those counts.

So this is my very honest, practical, useful wedding magazine review.

uk wedding magazine review

I’ve compared UK wedding magazines so you – brides, grooms and wedding suppliers – can see how they stand against each other: which have most useful content, most ads, the best advice and the most interesting features.

Having spent a good few days on my little spreadsheet, I’m going to break this wedding magazine review into manageable chunks. This is roughly how it’ll pan out – feel free to bookmark this page and come back for the best bits as I post them and link back over the next few days.

Hey everyone and happy Sunday evening… hope you’re having a lovely laid-back day and those of you who can be with your dads I hope you’ve all had a nice time together. My dad’s all the way up in the Lake District so we had a chat this morning, but I wish I could have made the trip up there instead… if you’re near to your dad you’re so lucky.

Anyway… time for me to stop waffling and recap the week we’ve had on the English Wedding blog.

Sunday: Blogger Bride Fran showed us her sparkles and Kelly from Boho Weddings and Events inspired a post about how weddings can take over our lives! Meanwhile Loulabelle’s cute campervan Bertie revealed his makeover ready for the wedding day.

  • Groom's view - the best things about marriage: "Looking at my ring finger every day to see the ring and what it means to us.
