Today’s wedding is so, so perfect… it’s full of laughter and love, with the loveliest styling and decor… and the most beautiful bride and gorgeous groom. I can’t think of a better way to begin our week, can you?!

The flowers are by Kate at Windmill Farm Flowers. Nicola told me they were “the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen. So perfect and effective.” The naked cake fitted the wedding style so well – and the decoration is fabulous. It was made by the Exclusive Cake Company, Dulverton.

The styling of the venue involved family and friends: “My Maid of Honour made us some beautiful bunting which we hung in the Barn. we made the venue look our own which was really important. The Groom and his groomsmen were amazing and did alot of the dressing of the venue which I loved.”

“We did homemade confetti which all of my beautiful bridemaids helped with. We put them into personalised bags. it was lovely. We had homemade bunting, and sweetbags and the favours were biscuits with tea!”

I LOVE today’s pretty outdoor wedding – gorgeous bride and groom Betty and Phil opted for an English country garden style celebration, mixing the prettiest flowers with cute bunting and home made signage – it’s wonderful in every way!

Betty & Phil’s day stood out from others I covered last year as it seemed to be very simple in its delivery. The bride, the details, the location – all very classic, chic and English garden themed. From the Sassi Holford dress, to the idyllic thatched cottage B&B venue at the foothill of St Catherines chapel. The weather was perfect, the scene was stunning and the spirit of the couple and the people topped it all off.

Regular blog readers will know I love weddings where things are done differently: where normal rules don’t apply and unusual things can happen. So I love marquees, but on one condition: they have to be in crazy beautiful places. Like this…

Spring, Summer or Autumn, the great outdoors has an amazing advantage over any other wedding venue  – a constantly changing colour palette,  a great feeling of being in touch with your surroundings, wonderful natural light (your photographer will love you!) and of course an amazing background to your celebration.  It’s not surprising then that there has been a growing increase in demand for marquee venues, special locations with fantastic country, coast or beachside views.

Lizzie and Nilo’s wedding is as beautifully traditional in style as it is epic in the party stakes… and the images are simply, elegantly wonderful. With a lot of Brazilians coming over for the wedding, Lizzie and Nilo wanted a really classical English setting, and the venue was certainly that – lots of oak paneled wood and decorative shields – exactky what they were aiming for.

The thing I love most about weddings is capturing the emotion – I really do love it when people let their guard down and show their true feelings in such an open way – and this one definitely had that. I’m not sure if it was the Brazilian twist to things, but the Groom, Nilo, had no qualms about showing exactly how overcome with emotion he was. It was beautiful to see. Plus they had Brazilian dancers, a magician, Lizzie’s mum sang an opera tune, and Nilo ended up on the drums!

Sarah wore a vintage dress with a gold ribbon and looked absolutely beautiful walking down the aisle towards Paul. They only had eyes for each other! The ceremony in the wonderful church building was relaxed and also emotional – the smiles on the bride and groom’s faces as they tied the knot said it all!

I am very honoured to photograph a lot of weddings through the year, and I enjoy being a part of each and every one. But now and then a wedding is particularly memorable – for the people, the emotion, the location or even the dress, the decorations and the speeches. Sarah and Paul’s wedding was one of those days. A beautiful late-Spring wedding with fresh cut flowers, a stunning vintage dress and a couple who were completely in love.

Emily and Max are just gorgeous – their wedding is the perfect combination of grace and sophistication with fun and a relaxed atmosphere. I love how the spirit of their day totally comes across in their fabulous photos. The DIY details are super too!

Max is from France and when he and Emily met, they hardly spoke a word of each other’s language. The spark between them must have been fantastic despite the language barrier, as they both took in upon themselves to learn each other’s language!

In my many years of photographing weddings, I have been incredibly privileged to witness what I have. Such genuine emotion touches the soul and allows one to be completely and utterly immersed in a moment, collectively sharing joy and happiness with a congregation of brand new acquaintances. Here are a few tips and tricks I have picked up along the way for dealing with group photographs. Everyone wants them, however it is the one thing that guests continually cite as the one thing that they dislike about a wedding day. I make a point to all couples to make sure that this part of the day is timetabled and organised as efficiently as possible: when done correctly, group photos can actually be a lot of fun and present opportunities for great candid moments.

What can I say about these lovely two?… they’re gorgeous. Their wedding is just as gorgeous. The spirit of their day is fun and full of character – and there are so many fabulous little touches I know will inspire you. Chloe & James – we love your wedding!

Red Barn Surrey wedding blog with Howell Jones Photography (18)

We had a cake made by James’s mum and all the flowers were also handmade from sugar paste. My sister made the confetti from dried rose petals and we used the handmade bunting she had for her wedding 4 years earlier. My mum made the place scrolls and handwrote each guests name and menu choices. My parents also made the table plan display from old book covers. It really made it such a special day having people contribute.

How do you feel about doing your own make up on your wedding day? I know for many of you it will be an absolute godsend to have a pro make up artist working alongside your hairdresser in the morning – but not just for your shaky hands and nervous excitement!

I have two photo-films to share with you today: first, Cathryn from  explains some of the benefits of hiring a professional make up artist. As well as having the very best products in their kit (probably saving you a fortune on make up), a pro will know from experience how timings on your day will go: she (or he) will make sure you’ll make it to the church on time, looking beautiful and with all your gorgeous girls at your side.

Contouring is the biggest beauty trend since brows were invented, and Cathryn has a fabulous tutorial on bridal contouring which you can watch right here on the English Wedding Blog. Do take a few minutes to watch this clip – you’ll see how subtle contouring makes for the loveliest bridal look as Cathryn talks you through, step by step.

Wedding stylists seem to achieve a cohesive look effortlessly – combining beautiful florals, stationery, locations and decor with a talent and instinct I wish I had. I’d love to be able to style something as beautiful as this… romantic, feminine colours against a rustic backdrop create such a glorious ambience for a wedding. If you’re looking for styling inspiration and advice, this gorgeous post is for you!

Huge thanks are due to an amazing team of wedding suppliers who worked together to inspire us all with this fabulous styled bridal shoot. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Write up by Hollie from Daisy Says I Do

Ever since I sourced some gorgeous rose gold sequinned fabric I have been dying for an opportunity to develop a styled shoot to use it. After meeting Tim Wiltshire, owner of Priors Tithe Barn in Brockworth I created a vision for a luxurious opulent feel in a romantic rustic setting, copper details and a statement flower wall. I love everything from design through to the final detail and found some amazing suppliers with an equally meticulous approach to help my vision become a reality.

Sometimes it’s easy to find a wedding stationery collection which stands out from the crowd… Something about Lilac & White takes my breath away: perhaps because I love a landscape and sunset, perhaps because I adore minimal, elegant design with beautifully considered typography and spacing. There isn’t a single invitation here I don’t love – and I hope you will too!

L&W’s founder Paula Pidgeon says “It’s easy to have lots of different ideas and to try and jam them all on one invite. This can ruin the overall design and elegance a couple is trying to achieve.” This is where wedding branding comes in. What is this? It’s a set of design ideas used consistently across a wedding day. It’s using the same colours, fonts and illustrations in all your stationery and feature graphics. These might be used on signs, wedding favours, table numbers, flowers etc. L&W recommend selecting these elements carefully and use them consistently to achieve a unique and steady style for the day. Consistency is the key.
