Today I’ve rediscovered Julieann Beads Wedding Jewellery, a Wedding Ideas magazine favourite, and designer of pretty bridal jewellery from Shropshire (although via the Julieann website they ship all over the UK).

The wave of beautiful vintage themed weddings just doesn’t seem to stop – and I’m really loving all the gorgeous vintage wedding photography around at the moment.

Allison and Jeremy had a gorgeous wedding day in Wales, complete with pink rose flower arrangements Allison had made herself, a beautiful and unusual wedding venue, and a wedding dress and lace shrug that are out of this world!

Allison and Jeremy chose Devon based photographers Lime Leaf Weddings to capture their day. I’m a big fan of Laura and Henley’s photography work, and this series of amazing wedding images is one of their best: the wonderful lightness in every image makes me wonder if they carried along their own little sunshine in a bag with the camera equipment. Aha. Market research. Best practice, essential for a successful wedding business.

So they say. And although I’m hugely proud of my marketing degree, I don’t always do everything they told me – market research has always got the better of me. I know what it is, I’m well aware I should do it, but I have to hold my hands up and admit that as far as my wedding business is concerned, I’ve blagged it and got lucky despite doing no research – or at least minimal research with a very informal approach. Naughty.

Nonetheless, I’m very aware that my business could do much better with a little research under its belt. I know a bit about my customers, and a bit less about the potential wedding calligraphy customers out there who aren’t buying from me.

What is market research for wedding businesses?

There are two methods of researching: primary research is asking potential customers for opinions and experiences, basically doing it yourself. That’s the hard way. Secondary research is finding results other people have done, articles, statistics etc. you can gather your research from.

The wedding market is huge: over 200,000 marriages a year in England and Wales (source: government stats). As a wedding supplier you’d be naïve to try and sell to all of those brides. And you can save a fortune on advertising if you’re selective: It’s always easier to segment the wedding market, and to target a particular segment.

Where to start segmenting the wedding market

All you have to do is mentally identify a few groups of brides: it’s dead simple. Different ways to segment the wedding market are:

  • Demographically: into groups by budget, by religion, by age etc.
  • Geographically: into groups by physical location
  • Behaviourally: into groups based on personality, lifestyle, social class etc.

For example, you could identify a segment of alternative brides who are not religious and live in Lincolnshire, if that suits your business.

What do you need market segments for?

Defining the particular market segments to target can really help you focus on your business and marketing strategies.

Adam from ARJ Photography says, “I was impressed by the grandeur of Rookery Hall (not untypical of a Cheshire wedding venue!), and the real mixture of old and new. They hold ceremonies in the older hall and then you go over for your wedding reception in the more modern wing.

“From a wedding photography perspective (which is where I come in!) it’s a great venue – loads of areas for group shots and couple shots, and lots of nice countryside backdrops for the natural reportage photography, as well as really nicely lit rooms for the ceremony and wedding reception.”

Would you like a little extra sunshine in your life today? I’ve got some, all beautifully bundled up in this gorgeous wedding full of bright Caribbean colours. Maria’s family had travelled from Trinidad for the wedding, and even booked a steel band to play at the reception as a surprise.

Happily for Maria and Tom, their choice of gorgeous orange and yellow for the flowers and decorations at their wedding more than made up for the Yorkshire skies (which weren’t quite up to Trinidadian standards that day)!

An understanding of the average UK wedding budget is a good start. Be aware of what people are spending on your area of weddings.

Current trends are key: whether it’s photojournalism, eco-chic or retro design, knowing what’s hot will keep your wedding business up to date.

Sometimes it can be tough to forget your personal views and preferences, but you must always focus on what your potential customers like. You may be a big fan of pure white colour schemes, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a huge market for hot pink out there!

WEDDING TV are looking for contestants for the new series of THE GREAT CAKE BAKE.

The couple should be getting in married in the next few months. The show takes a bride and groom and helps them to find their perfect cake designer.
Three cake designers compete to create the perfect wedding cake.
Then when the couple have chosen their perfect designer and signed off their cake, the cake maker sets about creating it.
The cake is revealed ideally on their wedding day making all their dreams come true.

There are some wonderful little snippets of text on the Esemee Fascinators website though… and I can’t resist sharing with you: Esemee’s bio includes this wonderful accolade which leaves the best until last… “As seen in Vogue, Asian Bride & Chaos New York, Lancashire Life, Pure Wedding and the Blackpool Gazette

To be fair, it seems from Esemee’s very impressive bio (there’s more where that little lot came from) that they’ve done more to put Blackpool* on the map than the tower and illuminations and all the rest!

An old marketing classic mantra is Product – Price – Promotion – Place. It can be helpful to write a sound marketing strategy around these four words.

Before I start, the one thing I always bear in mind is that a wedding marketing strategy can be reviewed. If you make a detailed plan and after a month you realise something has changed, review your strategy. Nothing’s written in stone, and you’re the boss after all!

Example: marketing strategy for Jenny’s home based wedding jewellery business

Product

Jenny designs and makes handmade crystal and wire jewellery sets. She plans to create understated and pretty designs, exclusively bridal styles (mainly white and ivory with a small range of colour options for more adventurous brides). She will offer a bespoke design service based on minor alterations to her main collection.

Price

Jenny’s bridal jewellery will be affordable for brides spending less than £5k on their wedding budgets. The collection will have a price range for individual pieces from £20 to £120. Jenny’s target order value will be £50 – £200, with most brides ordering a set (necklace, earrings and bracelet, for example). Jenny believes her customers are price-sensitive due to high competition.

The emotional side of weddings makes for unique client relationships. For many wedding businesses creativity and personality are crucial to success. Some parts of the wedding industry are incredibly competitive with hundreds of small businesses competing for every bride’s custom.

My background in weddings and marketing

I started a wedding business from scratch five years ago. The Wedding Calligrapher was launched with just a few hundred pounds and is now a successful full time calligraphy studio. I hardly ever pay for advertising and yet my order books are almost always full.

I’ve helped other businesses along the way, sharing my experience and the knowledge I’ve gained on small business forums and on a small website I built (at www.wedding-business.co.uk).

Now I’d like to share what I know about establishing a wedding business here on the English Wedding blog, to help other wedding suppliers, particularly those who are in the same position I was a few years ago.
