Why the Lake District is perfect for elopements: a friendly, expert guide by a Cumbria wedding photographer

I’ve always admitted I’m biased because this is my home – but the Lakes is the best place for a UK destination wedding. It just is. Since 2020, elopements have soared in popularity and naturally, the Lake District is an incredible place to elope. Here’s how to go about it, what to consider, and what to expect from your elopement in the Lakes.

This article is a collaboration with Mark Battista, a wedding photographer in Cumbria who’s captured many beautiful elopements over the years. If you’re looking for inspiration and advice on eloping to the Lake District, read his blog: Lake District Elopement Photographer | Your Day, Your Story, Your Way
So what counts as an elopement?
The romance of an elopement comes from times past, when couples would run away to get married in secret, just the two of them. Modern elopements can be just you two, or a small gathering with close family only – a handful of people.
An elopement can eliminate the stress of a full wedding in many circumstances: tricky family relationships, financial worries or anxiety can make weddings feel daunting for some couples. A tiny wedding can be the perfect solution for all kinds of reasons. Heading away to a romantic location brings some of the excitement of ‘running away to be married’.
What makes an elopement in the Lake District special?
Sharing your love and commitment in a really intimate setting has its own kind of magic.
Without the complexity of a full wedding with dozens of guests, elopements feel more relaxed, calmer and really personal.

Should you hire a photographer for a Lake District elopement?
If you can afford to, then yes: 100% yes. Memories fade, but having images of the day will help you relive the most special moments over and over again.
“Your elopement day may be short, but it is packed with emotion. Having an elopement photographer ensures nothing is missed – from pre-ceremony excitement to the quiet moments afterward. These images become your lasting record of an extraordinary day.” ~ Lake District elopement photographer Mark Battista
Aside from your elopement being a once in a lifetime adventure, the English Lake District is breathtaking, and professional elopement photography means you’ll have incredible pictures from memorable locations, which all add to the romance of an elopement in Cumbria amongst the lakes and fells.

Hiring a photographer is all about capturing memories of how your day will feel. Think beautiful lakesides, hidden fells, delicious evening light, away from busy touristy places and discovering the Lakes’ secret gems instead.
Because let’s not forget: the Lake District really does suffer from unsustainable levels of over tourism, and finding a space where it’s just the two of you is easier with help from an experienced elopement photographer!
“It’s often more comfortable to just be yourselves when there aren’t hundreds of guests present as an audience” ~ Mark Battista has years of experience photographing weddings and elopements all over the Lake District and Cumbria.

If you’re hiring a photographer for your elopement in the Lakes, having an expert like Mark to ask for advice will solve problems you didn’t even know might crop up: for example, having portrait photos in golden hour. Why? Because, as Mark explains on his blog, the official sunset time only tells part of the story. At many venues, the sun disappears behind the hills much earlier.
Some Lake District wedding venues keep light for longer, while others fall into shade surprisingly early. This is why local knowledge helps. It’s not just about knowing pretty places. It’s knowing where the light will be, when it will disappear, and what to do if the weather changes.
When to elope in the Lakes?

Consider tranquility and tourism, weather and accessibility – because I’m guessing you want the best and most beautiful backdrops for your Lake District elopement.
Cumbria shines throughout the seasons, with glorious green landscapes and endless blue skies reflected in summer lakes. It’s super busy in school holidays, so finding a quiet spot is something of a skill, and local knowledge is everything!
Autumn brings golden bracken across the fells, and dreamy sunsets (between the showers)!
Winter can be stunning with snow-capped mountains and pale light.
Finding bluebell-filled woodlands in springtime will make for fabulous photos – and the lakes can be dramatic, whipped up in the winds.
This February elopement at Storrs Hall on Lake Windermere is everything: romantic, elegant, with beautiful images in the incredible winter light.
How to choose the location for your elopement in the Lake District
The location – having a beautiful base with views, away from traffic or close to civilisation – is important not just on the day you’ll elope, but for the duration of your stay in the Lake District.
There’s quite a lot to consider, so choose carefully and opt for whatever suits you best. (Your elopement photographer can be a great source of inspiration and Mark has published a guide to the best Lake District hotels for elopements)
There are so many options!
- Perhaps a lakeside location, with wooden jetties and private lawns, away from the crowds
- Beautiful buildings, inside and out: luxury Lakes venues or rustic country charm
- Landscaped gardens, timeless romantic outdoor structures for ceremonies or photos
- Sunlight to suit a morning or afternoon ceremony, with photos before, after or both
- Foodie havens – and we have some corkers in Cumbria, with Michelin stars, accolades and fierce pride in local produce
- Some spots are easier to get to than others – roads in the Lakes are narrow, occasionally rollercoaster-ish, and can make for interesting driving (with limited public transport)
- If you’re staying a few days, consider your accommodation’s facilities: spas, private ceremony areas, dog friendly rooms and so on
- We also have a ton of history here! For example, Lindeth Howe, now a wedding venue, was once owned by Beatrix Potter. Every village has its story of times gone by, with local legends and a sense of time standing still in the loveliest possible way.
The cost of a Lake District elopement
As with weddings, your elopement can be low key and affordable or more luxurious – there’s no right or wrong.
Just like the options for a holiday in the Lakes, we have luxury hotels for exclusive stays – but plenty of visitors love campsites – and if the idea of eloping then retiring to your tent for the night is pushing it a bit, the charm of a quaint boutique hotel or a tucked away glamping spot can be just as perfect! So tailor your elopement budget to your personalities, and read Mark’s more detailed 2026 guide to the cost of a Lake District elopement here.
Here’s a quick outline of what to consider when budgeting for your elopement in Cumbria
Remember costs will vary by venue, accommodation and your plans for the day.
Consider the number of guests, your outfits, any styling – will your elopement be a mini wedding, or literally just the two of you?
Budget as low as £700, or for a luxury elopement and weekend away, £5k or more. (If you’re travelling to the Lakes with a few guests, plan events around your ceremony to turn the celebrations into an unforgettable mini holiday!)
Remember the legal costs of giving notice, and booking a registrar (this is cheaper if you marry at the registry office: you will pay more for them to come to your venue).
Lake District elopement photography can cost from £550 depending on the length of coverage (how long your photographer is with you) – this would be ceremony and a small portrait session – but make the most of your time here and do explore the area with your photographer! Or – if you’re with guests – have your elopement photographer capture your celebrations afterwards. Do chat to your photographer or visit their blog for ideas.
Consider your wedding outfits, hair and makeup (all optional!) – the beauty of an elopement is there’s no rules, so you can wear whatever makes you feel on top of the world, from bespoke tailoring to designer dresses and accessories – or choose something more comfortable you can relax in. (Some venues make you leave muddy hiking boots at the door – just saying!)
Think carefully about flowers for elopements – they can be so beautiful and really add to the romance of your day and the beauty of your images. But just don’t grab a bouquet from Tesco (literally, don’t even rely on finding a Tesco in the Lakes.) We have some incredible florists here, experienced in elopement flowers.
For accommodation, Cumbria is your oyster and we have some of the best! Luxury hotels, laid back glamping, charming B&Bs… set in villages or towns, or completely hidden away.

Transport might not be an elopement cost you’d think of immediately, but it’s worth researching public transport thoroughly – we don’t have Uber and taxis are rare in some locations. You could drive up here, or treat yourselves to hiring a classic car!
Remember to budget for the whole of your stay in the Lake District. Life will be amazing after you’ve said your vows, but it won’t stop! Spoil yourselves and make the most of this fabulous place – hike, explore, relax. Budget accordingly!
Some local hotels have packages to make your elopement planning and budgeting super simple. The Lake District is, after all, the best place in England to elope!
