The most elegant Autumn wedding styling ideas, inspired by luxury wedding planner Mark Niemierko
I consider myself really lucky to be able to pick up the phone for a chat with Britain’s top luxury wedding planner Mark Niemierko. Mark’s an absolute sweetheart, very open and bursting with ideas – he’s also one of the most talented stylists in the business with an incredible reputation for elegance and insanely beautiful weddings. At the start of the year Mark sent me these beautiful images, which I’ve used as inspiration for a little feature on wedding colours and styling touches, perfect for this time of year.
If you’re getting wed between September and November, I hope these gorgeous images will inspire you with some of the details for your wedding tables and decor!
8 stunning autumnal wedding style ideas – inspired by Niemierko
1. Embrace soft lighting
As the days grow shorter, lighting your evening celebrations will play a bigger part in weddings. Often, table decor focuses on flowers and favours: but candle light can add so much.
Do ask your venue whether they allow real flame candles (some don’t, so you may have to compromise with luxury flameless candles).
Add elegance and sparkle with glassware: choose different colours and textures for a wonderful interplay with the candles you choose. I adore Mark’s use of luxury taper candles which add height, and votives below: they cast a soft glow on the floral styling and look ever so romantic.
2. Incorporate textures
One of the strongest themes Autumn brings is harvest: as a country girl I’m forever nibbling blackberries from the hedge and samphire from the shoreline by my home. The textures of Autumn are seedheads and berries, alongside breathtaking blooms in rich colours.
Leaves are evergreen: rich and fragrant (imagine bay leaves or ruscus in lush dark shades) to complement strong colours in your florals: the pyramid shaped flowers in the picture are astilbe, teamed with softer roses, berries and set in gleaming copper vessels. This is such a stunning display, and the exquisite combination of textures really brings it to life.
3. Less is more: think quality before quantity
You don’t need to fill your wedding tables with stuff just for the sake of it. Simple, elegant place settings and a handful of the best florals or candles you can afford will look beautiful.
Colour is something couples on any budget can use to add character to wedding decor, so focus on a couple of key details in tones that will draw the eye and make an impact. These elegant tables have key florals and soft napkins to add luxury to place settings. The effect is breathtaking.
4. Seek out hero florals for impact
Whatever the season, your florist will be able to recommend a type of flower which packs a real punch.
In autumn, look for late blooming roses or dreamy dahlias – and make them the star of the show.
5. Reds and pinks are timeless Autumn colours
The classic Autumn palette of reds and oranges can be brought up to date with softer tones: shades of soft pink, rust and deep burgundy with coral and peach or pops of yellow. Gold accent colours add luxury.
… and just how adorable are those table lamps?!
A Niemierko wedding is a visionary event. Imagination is at the forefront of the luxury brand, and each wedding is planned around the couple, to reflect their personalities. As the UK’s number one wedding planner Mark Niemierko is something of a legend, planning just five weddings each year – each one an unforgettable experience for his couple and their guests.
6. Have fun with your floral design
Play with pops of colour! A wedding is a joyful celebration, so pops of yellow within a red and burgundy colour palette (for example) are perfect!
This colourful, beautifully styled wedding table combines elegant luxury with modern, playful floral styling – and it looks wonderful!
7. Choose elegant place settings
As a calligrapher I’m smitten with these fabulous place settings. Mark described them to me over the phone last year, and as soon as I saw the photos I was hooked. The lettering is extraordinary, and the quality is out of this world.
The elegant tassels and gorgeous modern lettering against a theatrical background look amazing. Inside, beautifully presented menus as a truly unique keepsake for every wedding guest. Pure genius!
8. Complement your beautiful wedding venue
Before you decide on an autumnal colour palette, think of the rooms in your wedding venue. Is there wallpaper? Artwork? Are the curtains, chairs or carpets a noticeable colour?
Rather than trying to cover what’s already in the space, incorporate it into your colour palette. Almost any colour can be incorporated into an autumnal wedding theme: soft blues with rust and warm orange tones go beautifully together. Pastels complement richer hues such as rich greens and shades of red and pink. Work with tones and shades, whatever colour your starting point may be: along the spectrum there will always be a shade which sings of autumn days and cosy, candlelit evenings.
