Reflections…

I’m not going to follow in others’ footsteps and do a review of the year. I’m pagan — so my new year has been and gone even before Christmas. And while English Wedding has had a lovely year, mine went bad. So: all eyes to the front on this wedding blog!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful Christmas holiday. If you’re working today — ack. Well I hope your boss isn’t in and you’ve brought games. Or if you’re just engaged and exploring the world of wedding blogs — welcome. Enjoy! There’s so much wedding inspiration on the interweb: start with my ‘wedding planning or work’ features — they’ll keep you entertained for hours.

On independence

A new year really makes you think, doesn’t it? It helps you reflect on what you should be doing better, and plan for the next twelve months. And I’ve been pondering the big things — well, for me. Here’s one I had to get off my chest!

English Wedding — an independent blog

Independence is massively important to me, and to my wedding businesses as well — and you might think that’s not the wisest business choice. It’s not the biggest earner for my blog. But is English Wedding Blog a business? I’m not even sure I want it to be.

Is your wedding business stuck in a rut?

Mine is. There you go — let’s start a blog post with a confession! My wedding calligraphy business is going well, I love the work but… there’s something missing. Is anyone else out there looking for a bit of creative inspiration to inject into their work?

I’ve spent the day with two friends who inspire me — and I’m going to make my New Year’s Resolution now. I know it’s a bit early (but the pagan side of me says the first of December is surely something a bit new-yeary in the calendar). I’m determined to branch out a little.

My Grandma’s real vintage wedding day

Having written about my parents’ vintage wedding recently, I wanted to tell you about my Grandma’s wedding day too. My Grandma is an amazing lady, in her late eighties and as witty and forward-thinking as anyone I know.

Dorothy and Dave, April 1949

Dorothy and Dave, April 1949

Grandma was married in 1949, only a few years after the end of the second world war. She was 26 and Grandad was 27. They were together for 37 years and I have the loveliest memories of playing in the garden and feeding the ducks as a little girl in Buxton where they lived. My grandparents’ wedding was all about the marriage itself: no fuss, just a very personal celebration with family and friends. Rationing was still in effect in the UK at that time so budgets were pretty tight, but my grandma still has fond memories of her wedding day to share…

English Wedding blog and friends

facebookPlease tell me I’m not the only one feeling contemplative this week — as the seasons change I seem to have relaxed into a very mellow frame of mind! That’s not to say I’m feeling down: on the contrary, I have some plans for my little UK wedding blog which I’m quietly excited about.

As ever, I’ll be sharing my thoughts and ideas over on facebook first of all — I’ve started to use facebook to jot down ideas, feelings and thoughts — the kind of wedding ideas I’d share with friends first before publishing for the world to see… naturally, dearest reader, if you’d like to join me on facebook I’d love to have your company over there!

And suddenly it’s September…

Wow. Where did summer go?! Surely we’re still in it… no? It’s really gone then? Oh dear.

I hope you all had a fabulous summer, wherever you went, whatever you’ve been up to, those of you busy planning for September weddings and those of you like my star bride Sally who’ve just got married. It does feel like we’ve had some lovely sunshine, good times and memories to cherish.

Who are we? New faces on English Wedding

There are new faces on English Wedding — and my funny old one too. I’ve added the little widget in the sidebar on the right of the page which you’ll see when you click on a single blog post — to make it clear who’s writing what on the blog.

I thought it’d be nice to reintroduce everyone: some familiar friendly faces and some new guest bloggers who are bringing their stories to the blog. So by way of an introduction, this is us!

Why wedding blogs rock — and what the magazines can never do!

wedding blogs vs magazines in the uk rose veil credit cardI almost had a crisis of faith in wedding blogging recently. It was one of those scary moments that hit you sometimes — I picked up a wedding magazine (that wasn’t the scary bit) and it wasn’t what I expected.

Wedding magazines were all about big brands and vaguely old fashioned trends, I thought. The appeal of the big wedding blogs is always from being edgy and challenging, alternative and fresh — tearing away from the boring old wedding mags.

Wedding blogger photoshoot: mystery locations, fire, magic and crash helmets

Ciao ragazzi!

Ciao ragazzi!

In the interest of maintaining a pretty distinct niche for English Wedding, my latest photoshoot was all about creativity: having a blast and enjoying the experience. And please do forgive me for a self indulgent blog post today!

While the other UK wedding bloggers look amazing in their vintage wedding dresses and accessories, as a calligrapher and artist I like to be a little different. (Just as the weddings I love most of all have something a little unique about them.)
