Guest article by our lovely friend and sponsor Amanda Karen Photography

In the year that we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of women getting the vote, it’s no surprise that female issues are big news. And the same is true in the wedding world too because over the last few years, there’s been a silent revolution going on and it really has shaken things up. I’m talking about the rise of the female wedding photographer.

If you were to rewind ten years and browse wedding magazines and the first blogs, you’d see credits that looked a whole lot different. Male photographers were the norm and female photographers made up just a tiny proportion of those working in the industry. In fact, Claire estimates that when she started this blog back in 2009, around 90% of the photographers out there were men.

Whiz forwards to 2018 and the picture is very different indeed. This split between numbers of men and women hasn’t just changed a little, it’s shifted dramatically and now, 70% of the submissions that Claire receives for these pages are from women with almost 60% of photographers listed in the English Wedding Directory being female.

When you’re planning your wedding, it can feel as if you’ve stumbled into a room where everyone is talking a language you don’t understand. There are conversations around dry hire, corkage, guipure, Mikado and so many other things besides. Of course, when it comes to your wedding photography, it’s exactly the same. Fine art, reportage, editorial and fashion… the list goes on. Well I’m here with a language lesson and I’m answering the question – can you have it all?

Fine art photography – light and dreamy, often using natural light and also capturing the smallest details of your day in the most romantic images

Let’s start with the terminology. Reportage photography has been a phrase that’s been used for a while now and it appeared around the millennium to mark out the ‘new style’ photographers of the time. Instead of a limited number of posed photos, reportage photographers documented the day as it unfolded, captured those ‘real’ moments and told the whole story of the day. Reportage is a documentary style, the shots are edited for sure but they’re also a little more ‘real’ and a little more ‘raw’ than other styles.

The florals in today’s shoot are out of this world – totally luxurious, soft-as-candyfloss pastel shades which must just smell divine! They’re the creation of one of our favourite UK floral designers, lovely Ruth from All for Love London. If flowers are your thing, and you can afford to splurge a little on your tablescapes… then ladies and gents, this is how it’s done!

This is wedding styling inspiration for all of you who are looking for a romantic, classic and feminine look for your wedding tables. There’s also the most beautifully styled sweet table with a feature wedding cake by Little Cake Garden and iced biscuits by Honey Bee Cakes. The shoot was styled by Events by Funmi, with images by the wonderfully talented, super lovely Amanda Karen Photography – one of our English Wedding Blog sponsors. We love it and we hope you do too!

a beautiful fairytale wedding at Lainston with Amanda Karen Photography (31)

I have been saving up this beautiful wedding for so long! It reminds me that spring is just around the corner: the flowers are beautiful, everything is so wonderfully feminine and romantic and seeing the happiness of stunning bride Sam and her handsome groom Martin just has me smiling right back at the screen! This is pure, unadulterated fairytale – the theme will very soon become evident as you scroll through all the super pretty “Happily Ever Afters” – and there’s a healthy sprinkling of glitter and Disney magic too!

I love my photography and I had a very specific idea in mind. I travelled from Leeds to London for the National Wedding Show where I met with Amanda and Hutch. I was immediately put at ease and just fell in love with their style and the beautiful images they had taken. I knew straight away that I wanted them to be the photographers at my wedding.

Today’s wedding is pretty special, and all kinds of glamorous and elegant with a modern twist. Between Christmas and New Year is one of the loveliest times to get married – it’s a time of year when family is close to all our hearts, and that for me makes a wedding even more special.

I love the sparkling metallics dotted through Danielle and Martin’s day, the luxe fabrics and feathers, the candles and soft floral styling. It all comes together perfectly to create a decadent art deco look – and the opulent touches are perfect for the time of year!

Hi everyone! I have been saving up this beauty of a shoot to glam up your Monday and give your eyes a treat! Lovely English Wedding Blog sponsor Amanda Karen Photography delights us every time with her editorial shoots, and this is one of her very best. Teaming up with Fleur & Fig Styling & Events, the look is fine art beauty mixed with an edge of London chic. The backdrop is the fabulous (and brilliantly named) Dead Dolls House, which inspired Fleur & Fig’s styling and design concepts you’re about to see.

I adore the deep blues and greys used throughout the shoot: the cake crafted by Wildflower Cakes is breathtaking, and teamed with soft grey silk linens from Lancaster and Cornish and crockery from Classic Crockery it looks stunning. Lovely Lauren at Oh Wonder Calligraphy created a luxe invitation suite in her signature style with the most delicate hand torn edges and romantic calligraphy.

The wedding traditions I like best of all are the simple, fun and creative ones. Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue is a tradition many of us uphold – and it’s lovely because our mums, sisters, grandmas and closest friends all love to get involved (in a good way!)

I have been playing on the internet and discovered so many creative ideas for those somethings old, new, borrowed and blue. Traditionally the items would have been carried, or on the bride’s person during the wedding, but recently brides have been a little more creative in counting things like vintage cars as their ‘something old’ – and we’re all for that! If you’re struggling with any one of your somethings old, new, borrowed or blue, here are some ideas to help!

Something old…

1. Think about any family heirlooms – from old champagne glasses to photo frames or candle holders you could use in a display area

2. A vintage clutch to hold your lippy, blister plasters etc. (and all your other ‘somethings’)

Catherine and Florent’s destination wedding in France looks like a dream come true. The gorgeous bride and groom travelled to the south-east of France, to a fairytale venue with views of the distant mountains, for their beautiful, intimate summer wedding. I adore the light, bright colours they used to style their day: mint and delicate pink are so fresh and summery – and the images by English Wedding Blog sponsor Amanda Karen Photography are out of this world.

We searched online for a photographer who was willing to travel. We fell in love with Amanda and Hutch’s style of photography. They had taking wedding photos in France and in a chateau in their bucket list, which is exactly what we were planning for our wedding, so it was a perfect match. After meeting Amanda, and seeing how lovely she was, we were thrilled to choose them as our photographers.

Autumn wedding styling isn’t all about the pine cones, you know. I get it: they’re cute little things, with a dash of childhood nostalgia attached… but I think after years upon years of pine cone wedding styling they’re about to be pushed from the top spot – by the humble gourd!

So many wedding traditions and styling ideas start in the US and gradually make their way over here. With all the budding excitement of Hallowe’en they start their pumpkins early over there… and the mini versions (gourds is a catch-all term for anything pumpkinesque, in my simple mind!) are colourful, cute and charming as hell. I love how Kate and Ali used them to style their day.

Kate and Ali got married at Notley Tythe Barn in Oxfordshire with a family friend working as a set designer lending her creativity and a very talented Mother of the Bride making the wedding cake for the happy couple. The bride and bridesmaids look stunning with bouquets in pastel tones and dresses in shades of dusky pink; copper and bronze accent colours hint at the fabulous styling of the reception venue and capture the spirit of autumn days.

Occasionally I lurk on wedding forums… it’s a habit I’ve indulged since I started my little calligraphy business back in 2005. And this week I came across a little discussion about throwing the bouquet. With my mind very much on wedding traditions this month (we’ve a few interesting features up our sleeves) I was very curious to find out people’s opinions on bouquet tossing! With some of the amazing bouquets I’ve seen at weddings recently, I can’t imagine that throwing it would be a) physically possible, b) anything less than heartbreaking and c) financially viable!

I’d love to know your thoughts – will you throw your bouquet?

Join our little facebook discussion – is the flying bouquet a good thing?

The pros:

It’s a sweet tradition, in a way – all the girls get together for a little bit of harmless fun.

The rest of the crowd like to see who really wants that catch, and who’s trying to hide at the back – I get it. It can be hugely entertaining!

Alison and Gerald are brilliant – their flowers are fabulous and their wedding mixes classic styling touches with a sense of timelessness and Hollywood glamour. The pearl strings and champagne table settings are a lovely idea – and everything about their day at the Bull Hotel in Gerrards Cross is pretty, feminine and super romantic.

I love seeing couples getting married later in life. I think Alison and Gerald’s wedding has its own kind of magic: and they look perfect together, don’t you think? Beginning a new journey together as husband and wife is a wonderful thing to do, no matter if you’re twenty-something or fifty-something – and the smiles on our bride and groom’s faces prove that marriage is just as exciting at any stage in life.
