Sarah & Michael’s fabulous cobalt blue and orange Mapperton House wedding, with Linus Moran Photography

Today’s wedding is another treat; a beautiful celebration with stunning florals and styling – but most importantly for me, with a brilliant sense of humour and some amazingly fun moments. Sarah and Michael were married at Mapperton House in Dorset, and opted for a vibrant colour palette and gorgeous styling touches. The bouquet is a stunner: orange tones and corals alongside blues with roses and dahlia blooms, cornflowers and agapanthus, freesias (I think!) and sweet peas.

Sarah and Michael’s colour palette was cobalt blue and orange – because, in Sarah’s own words, “my engagement ring has a sapphire and my husband and my family are ginger. Therefore, my shoes were cobalt blue jiving shoes, as we love to jive. I also had sapphire earrings to match my ring and a pearl necklace that was my grandma’s who unfortunately passed away when I was young. I also had a beautiful hair piece which matched my hair and the pearls of the necklace.”

I was lucky enough to spot Linus’ page on Facebook when he was offering a competition to win an engagement shoot. We entered and won. The engagement shoot was great fun and the photos were so amazing that we chose to cancel our original choice of photographer and go with Linus. I am so happy we did.

Absolutely loved our photographer and his team. Linus and Will were brilliant on the day, it was hot and we had a lot of guests but that didn’t stop them getting lots of natural shots and including all our family and friends. They even managed to catch the moment when our bluetooth speakers interrupted the ceremony. Lots of laughs and hilarity all captured on camera.

Our wedding photos came through in two stages. One set were the highlights so we could see a snapshot of what are photos would be like. They were fantastic so we were very excited to see the whole collection. We were sent a website link which we could share with friends and family, details of how to easily download the whole collection, and a presentation box with a memory stick of all the photos. Everything we could have possibly wanted. We were also offered prints of the photos but we simply couldn’t choose which ones to print at that time.

During the ceremony, as it was outdoors and under a marquee, we had a large portable speaker setup which meant we could play our own music. Half way through the ceremony, just as the wedding rings were being handed over by the best man, it announced “bluetooth disconnected” which made everyone burst into laughter, a point we will all fondly remember and that our photographer managed to capture perfectly.”

These are the moments a documentary style wedding photographer will capture when others might not be ready. The unexpected, the genuine outburst of emotion (laughter, tears or overwhelming love) – and grinning through these images makes it all the more heartwarming to see the next…

Wedding venue:

Mapperton House and Gardens, Beaminster, Dorset

Your wedding style or theme:

Classic, blue and orange

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Used mostly local vendors as we wanted our wedding to showcase Dorset. Therefore our caterers, florist, cake maker were all from the Dorset area and highly recommended.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Try and do as much of the decoration/stationery as you can. Nowadays it is easy to outsource every inch of your wedding planning but its nice to do some aspects yourself in order to give it more of a personal touch. Likewise, we kept favours to a minimum and went for local Dorset chocolates instead which were displayed in book like boxes. Perfect for guests to share at the table and limits mess, packaging and doesn’t take up as much space.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Our marquee vendors were fantastic, with the concern of torrential downpour or the opposite of a heat wave, they were so flexible in terms of meeting our needs we were happy to spend more money on better flooring etc. Likewise with our photographer choice, he was more expensive than our original but well worth it as the pictures show.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

As I was fond of graphic design at school and use those skills regularly in my job as a teacher, I designed and created all the stationery myself.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

It was the first one I pulled off the shelf, the first I tried on, and despite comparing it to many others, could not be beaten. I adored my dress and loved it on the big day.

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

Teokath London (Canterbury)

And what did the groom wear?

My husband and his groomsmen were navy suits with orange ties and bright orange socks. They went perfectly with the theme and flowers and made for a perfect photo opportunity when they all bared their socks.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

My bridesmaids wore cobalt blue long dresses from Phase Eight. We also bought them pearl necklaces to match myself.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

All our makeup and hair was done by professionals.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Jessie was an easy choice as she is Dorset based and award winning. She runs West Dorset Wedding Flowers. Again we chose blues, oranges and creams as well as picking flowers which carried beautiful scents too. https://westdorsetweddingflowers.co.uk/home

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We hired a marquee for the grounds where we got married so it was a blank canvas when we started, however once Taddle Farm had added all the furniture, panelling, curtains and voile, there wasn’t much need for too much decoration as we wanted to keep it classic and simple. The marquee had panoramic windows on two sides so that the guests could enjoy the beautiful scenery of the manor house and gardens too.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

Our photo booth was completely homemade. Being both teachers we used an old fashioned school desk for two and placed a blackboard behind it. The blackboard was decorated by some of my students so it was very personal.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We went for a classic designed 3 tier cake which mimicked my dress design with 3 flavours of lemon drizzle, coffee cake and Victoria sponge. Again the cake makers are local to Dorset and award winning – angel cake company http://www.angelcakecompany.co.uk

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

During the canapes and drinks we had a live jazz band who strolled around the garden playing, they were fantastic.
In the evening we had my old primary school teacher, who is now a DJ, DJ the night away with not only fantastic music but also with some personal memories of myself thrown in.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Don’t worry if something goes wrong on the day just enjoy the moment as you’ll find the day flies by. Invest in a good photographer as that way you can always look back and remember your special day.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Having each other there all the time and planning our future together1
