So today is officially my last day of work this week… we’re treating ourselves to a very long weekend of music and dancing our heads off, plus a little Christmas shopping too. Of course English Wedding will still have fabulous features coming your way: we’ve a wedding dress showcase tomorrow and then 3 gorgeous real weddings to share with you – all very different, and from Devon, Essex and London. I can’t wait to see them live on the blog! Today though, join me and my lovely friend Carol Elizabeth Photography for a virtual tour around one of Oxford’s most exciting wedding venues – the Ashmolean Museum. Carol is an English Wedding team member and visited the Ashmolean on our behalf earlier in the autumn when they held an open evening. She took her camera and captured a few images from the event – and she’s shared some fabulous pics from a beautiful real wedding at the Ashmolean too!

Gorgeous newlyweds Fiona and Ashley’s spring wedding from Stratton Court Barn is just fabulous – they used rich purple tones to create a luxe, sophisticated wedding theme and chose a venue with oodles of cosy character which needed just a few creative touches to bring it to life. We searched for photographers in Oxfordshire and looked at lots of websites! We wanted a more natural style of photography and we didn’t want our photos to look too posed, so we narrowed down our search by picking photographers who fitted our desired style. We used price to narrow down our search further as we had a maximum budget in mind. We then had phone calls with our shortlisted photographers as it was important to us that they were easy to talk to and understood what we were looking for. Another thing that we took into account was whether the photographer had been to our venue or whether they would be happy to visit the venue beforehand, as we wanted them to be familiar with the layout and where would be good spots to take photos. Carol ticked all the boxes for us.

“We had a holiday theme with an asian twist. All our tables were named after South East Asian Islands and we also had Asian lounge music in the background. The reason for that was because we met in Malaysia and the start of our relationship was spent travelling in different places in South East Asia.

Caswell House in Oxford was the perfect venue – it’s a beautiful venue with lots of areas for photos. The team at Caswell are incredible, they made every effort on the day to make it special, including bringing canapés during the photos!

Hannah and Tim are fortunate enough to have a very talented family friend who arranged their venue flowers and Hannah’s Nan is a retired florist so she arranged the bouquets. Most of the flowers were sourced from Green & Gorgeous flower farm and supplemented with some supermarket flowers and greenery from home. The rented milk churns and watering cans, vases and jam jars were perfect for other displays and table flowers.

Josie and Simon’s wedding is just fabulous: the colour they created in every aspect of their day is just wonderful for a January wedding. Peacock feathers look stunning in a British flower bouquet; herbs as favours and place settings are perfect, and I adore Josie’s gorgeously vibrant wedding dress – you’ll love this!

Chance and Google led us to Carol. We knew that we would be getting married in an iconic venue, that needed someone who knew it to photograph it well. We searched for online portfolios of the Bodleian and found Carol’s. We liked the style of photography and we liked the range of couples in her photos – not all couples are 20-something instagram supermodels! Then we met her and she put us at ease, and we felt comfortable with her taking care of our special day.

We were at 4 different locations for Ruth and Kieran’s wedding, which offered lots of variety for their photos with some really amazing backdrops. I started at the rented house, which was very quirky with plenty of character. We then drove over to the church wedding ceremony in Abingdon, which is a lovely bright church, quite modern with plenty of space for all the guests. And a really lovely vicar, who was so helpful and accommodating to ensure we had plenty of lovely photos for Ruth and Kieran to remember their day.

For those of you who love peonies… today’s wedding is wonderfully pretty, romantic and set in the most deliciously landscaped venue. Elizabeth is beautiful – she told me the best thing about being married to Simon is “knowing that day in and day out you will be able to walk with your best friend and share special moments and make memories together.” Isn’t that just so romantic?

We chose specifically to have this venue as it did not need much decoration.  We only had chair sashes, strands of fairy lights in the main barn from Oakwood Events and goldfish bowls with floating peonies.

Today’s is a fabulously fun, colourful and creative wedding on a budget – Charlotte and Gareth were married at Fison Barn and wanted to keep their day informal and pretty without breaking the bank! Their ideas are lovely; Charlotte’s DIY tips and her English Wedding Interview are a great read. I love Charlotte’s honesty too: they tried making invitations but in the end, as it can be so time-consuming to do, they bought their invites online and focused on the craft projects they’d really enjoy. And the ones where Gareth spent a few days covered in glue… oops!

Like with everything in this wedding, our flowers had to be colourful and fun. I used  Richard Mathews, who offered a good deal and were friendly, I gave them sort of free range explaining my theme was colourful and fun.  He asked me to find examples of flowers I liked then he worked out something from those. I was so happy with them as he’d managed to put in fresh sweet pea flowers, a flower I had really wanted.

We’re blessed to have such fabulous historic wedding destinations in the UK – our coastlines, countryside and quaint, quintessentially English cities inspire the loveliest of weddings. I’m so happy to be sharing Janina & Steve’s day with you this morning. They’re the sweetest couple – the details are stunning (LOVE that bouquet!) even though they chose not to have a theme: the spirit and style of their day comes from the grace of the city of Oxford and its architecture.

Oxford wedding blog with Carol Elizabeth Photography (31)

“We love Oxford’s libraries, gardens and architecture. Getting married in two historic buildings, one of them among the most iconic buildings in Oxford was a privilege. We have both moved to Oxford from abroad and the wedding was our chance to share the life we have built here with our friends and families. Many of the most important people in our lives hadn’t met each other before. We had our rehearsal dinner in Somerville College, where we met and where Steve still teaches and we hosted a brunch the morning after the wedding in our house. For the wedding itself, we both immediately knew we wanted to celebrate in the Divinity School when we first visited it.”

Sarah wore a vintage dress with a gold ribbon and looked absolutely beautiful walking down the aisle towards Paul. They only had eyes for each other! The ceremony in the wonderful church building was relaxed and also emotional – the smiles on the bride and groom’s faces as they tied the knot said it all!

Words & images: Carol Elizabeth Photography, Oxfordshire

I am very honoured to photograph a lot of weddings through the year, and I enjoy being a part of each and every one. But now and then a wedding is particularly memorable – for the people, the emotion, the location or even the dress, the decorations and the speeches. Sarah and Paul’s wedding was one of those days. A beautiful late-Spring wedding with fresh cut flowers, a stunning vintage dress and a couple who were completely in love.

My best friend from school gets married next weekend and I really can’t wait for the day. It’s going to be all kinds of amazing! 🙂 I love that they’ve chosen to have a spring wedding: there is something enchanting about this time of year, don’t you think?

Spring weddings on the English Wedding Blog. Carol Elizabeth Photography (3)

Visually, spring is just so beautiful. Blossom is all around; seasonal bouquets include lovely tulips, anemones and muscari (some of my absolute favourites) and your venue’s gardens will be starting to burst into life. You may be lucky enough to find a carpet of bluebells or even primroses for your wedding pics, and in late spring there’ll be wisteria-covered walls and beautiful magnolias creating the most colourful, natural backdrops for your portraits.

Weddings in spring always have a feeling of freshness and new beginnings.  The backdrop will usually be spring flowers scattered on the ground, a slight chill in the air, and soft afternoon sunshine.  Suppliers and venues are gearing up for a busy season, and the first few weddings of the year are wrapped up in the excitement and anticipation of so many new opportunities to make a wedding day extra-special.” ~ Carol Elizabeth Photography
