Breathtaking floral design for Donna & Nick’s Porthmawr Country House wedding, with Jake Morley Photography

Published by Claire Gould on

The title for today’s real wedding on the blog is thoroughly deserved. Breathtaking – in that the florals literally stopped me in my tracks, they’re so beautifully chosen and arranged by bride Donna. She has a wonderful instinct and talent with flowers – so get those Pinterest boards ready, because the vibrant blooms in today’s wedding are about to blow your mind!

Donna is beautiful and then some. With Nick by her side she’s absolutely radiant: they make the loveliest couple – they spent their wedding day smiling and their photos throughout the day are just divine, with some stunning shots over the Welsh hills.

Colour was important as I’m a designer and a florist. It was a flowery explosion of colour with glam rose gold accents in a country house. Flowers were the main decoration other than table plan, table runners etc we worked with the beautiful venue and embellished on top of it. Icing on the cake as I say. All the elements just worked perfectly.

I own a florist along with my sister – Secret Garden Florist Cardiff. We wanted bright summery colours in corals, peaches, pinks, yellows and lots of textured foliage. Peonies and David Austin roses are a favourite of mine along with some of the more usual flowers like craspedia, nerine and echevia. We spent the two days prior making all the flowers on site, that’s why a venue we could rent from Thur-Mon was so important to us. We drank lots of bubbles and made beautiful flowers – what more could you want with 4 of your closest team/family!

I had seen Jake at weddings over the years because of my work as a florist, and I loved his relaxed style and manner. We were over the moon with Jake’s photography skills and his personality. He seamlessly blended in with our day, made us all feel at ease and was a great success with our wedding guests. We didn’t even know he was there, and for me that’s a great photographer.

We were on honeymoon and Jake posted a preview on his blog for us to see. We we completely and utterly blown away. Jake captured all the perfect moments in such a wonderful way. We especially loved going for a drive up the mountain and being able to capture some shots of us in the beautiful countryside literally on top of the world!

Wedding month:

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Chilled out sunny weekend with loved ones, great food, music and the perfect venue!

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Most from working within the florist business, however I have some great friends who have small independent businesses that were able to help me. However blogs were a great inspirational tool.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Save a regular amount every month and it soon builds up, just question that night out or expensive dress for a year or so and you will be surprised.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

The flowers! Obviously I’m a florist.
The venue and the food were very important to us.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

A small independent company which a friend owns called White Knot. She created all the illustrations and worked with me to get the colour palette and design right.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I did like lots of dresses however I always knew I wanted simple elegance that was timeless. I couldn’t picture myself in a big dress so when I tried it on, I knew it was the perfect dress for me.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

Had Lisa Logan do the hair however opted for my best friend Louise to do the make up, after lots of trials and shopping trips for make up. It’s such a personal choice and we have been friends for years and used to doing each other’s make up, I couldn’t think of a better choice.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

Entry wedding sign made by grooms dad and painted by myself.
Made the rose gold glitter table numbers as I couldn’t find any I liked. Mixed 3 colour glitters to achieve the perfect shade!
Instagram frame decorated with fresh flowers.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

3 tier cake with a different flavour in each (lemon & poppyseed – raspberry & chocolate – vanilla bean)
Decorate with a rose gold bottom tier, ombré second tier and plain top tier. Then beautiful delicate iced flowers placed onto the front.
A friend designed and made for me who has a small business.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

Tim Cronin played out ceremony music, drinks reception music with acoustic guitar and loop pedal then entertained us in the evening with a live set followed by a DJ set

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Plan a mood board, my excel sheet was my bible!
Have a clear vision of what you want and remember to have fun! It’s your wedding after all. I done it all spread out and started early as I didn’t want a big rush at the end. Little and often…

What’s the best thing about being married?

You made a promise to your best friend who you love dearly. Just continuing to be yourself and have fun. Enjoying every minute of every day together. Explore the world and know your best friend is at your side every step of the way.
