Tom & Alex’s creative South Downs wedding, with GK Photography
Ah… the weekend awaits and it looks like it’s going to be a sunny one! Before we head up into the mountains I have a stunning wedding to share with you – it’s from last summer and you can almost taste the August sunshine! Tom & Alex’s day has everything: it’s beautifully styled, they both look amazing, the details are on point and these two are so loved up it’s melting my wedding bloggy heart. Bonus points for the boat… this is an epic day and I just know you’ll love it!
Have a lovely Friday!

How did you choose your photographer?
We searched for a photographer who would capture the excitement, feeling and emotions of the day. We also wanted the photos to be bright, colourful and creative, this is when we stumbled upon Greg’s portfolio at a wedding fayre and knew he was exactly what we were looking for.
Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!
Greg was amazing throughout the whole experience; from initial contact via email, the engagement shoot, the wedding day and editing process afterwards. On the day he was extremely professional and also incredibly relaxed, which really put everyone at ease. He blended seamlessly into the wedding party, to the point where we didn’t really know he was there. He captured every moment and emotion of our special day and we still love looking at our photos now. The photos are vibrant, full of life and very artistic. We would highly recommend Greg and even guests complimented on how brilliant he was on the day.
Videographer details – and any thoughts for other couples about having a wedding video?
We decided to create our own video, using 3 GoPro cameras, to get more personalised and real video. One of the best men edited the video the week after, with some of the songs from the day.
Tell us about your venue – what made this place special for you?
Our wedding reception was held at Duncton Mill Fishery, in the heart of the South Downs National Park, West Sussex. We chose the venue due to its location, stunning scenery and the ability to create our own wedding. It is a family run business and was a blank canvas for us to add our own personal touches, which was perfect for us. Caroline is a family friend and couldn’t have been more helpful throughout the whole process. We chose to host our wedding breakfast and disco in ‘Beautiful World Tents’ Tipis. They really set the scene and complimented our rustic and outdoor wedding.
Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?
Yes we loved our outfits. Tom ordered his suits for himself and the groomsmen from Moss Bros and the quality, fit and style was great. The wedding dress shopping experience was exactly how I imagined it would be. I bought my dress from a boutique in Derby called ‘The Wedding House’. They made me feel really special and the attention to detail was amazing. My dress was designed by Martina Liana and was absolutely stunning. I loved wearing it and wish I could wear it everyday! I also wore Jimmy Choos which was my dream come true.
Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness
We hired a family friend to do our flowers for the wedding. She runs her own business called ‘Buds to Bouquets’. Sue was very patient and listened to our ideas and advised us on which flowers would be in season in August and what would work well together. She created beautiful bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids, button holes for the groomsmen and family members and flower arrangements in the church and the venue. Our flowers in the church were pastel coloured and the flowers at the venue were bright and vibrant which suited each part of the day perfectly. Some personal favourites were the arrangements on the bike and the handmade life sized picture frame.
As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?
Tom’s Mum made the cake which she was quite nervous about as she was travelling from Cornwall to Sussex the day before the wedding. After making it, delivering it and arranging it perfectly on the morning of the wedding, the three tiered, rustic Victoria sponge cake was left in the tipis until the reception. The weather was fairly hot and humid throughout the day and when we arrived at the venue the cake had collapsed on the floor! Luckily people were there to save it and squish it back together just in time for us to cut it and have a quick photo! It was hilarious but still tasted amazing!
Tell us about any special personal touches, or creative projects you made yourselves
We created A LOT for the wedding day using old recycled wood, gin bottles and jars. It was a big project and looked amazing when we put it all together on the day so was worth every minute of planning and preparation.
We made lots of personalised signs using wood and white paint to dot around the venue e.g. welcome to our wedding, wees and poos (pointing to the posh Shepherd Huts toilets), order of the day, first day, yes day and best day dates and a sign post of special places we have travelled to.
We collected lots of unique gin bottles and jars to display on tables and decorate different areas. I then attached ribbon, beads and hessian onto the bottles.
We created a life size photo frame as our ‘photo booth’. This was made using 8 ft timber sleepers and decorated with flowers and ivy. This was such a hit with the wedding guests!
We also decorated a vintage bike with white spray paint and flowers. This was the first thing our guests saw as they entered the wedding venue.
One of the highlights of our day was arriving at the wedding venue by boat on the stunning lake. This gave us a few minutes to be alone since saying our vows and chance to take in the day so far.
What was your first dance song? Why did you choose it?
Our first dance song was Heaven by Bryan Adams. We chose this song as the lyrics were perfect and we love the song.
