Alex and Laura’s exceptionally nautical wedding at SS Great Britain, with Martin Dabek Photography

Published by Claire Gould on

Alex & Laura’s wedding is in the most amazing ‘venue’ – if we can describe a 19th century transatlantic steamship as a wedding venue! I love their creativity in choosing a space which really sets the scene for a memorable and adventurous wedding day. This is all so gorgeous: Laura is stunning in a shorter length dress and the nighttime photos taken after their reception are wonderfully unique and exciting!

“Less was more with the SS Great Britain. There was already such an incredible back drop that putting too much onto it would have taken away from the ship. We just added some some fairy lights and bunting to the party space. Alex’s mum made meters and meters of bunting which was a total labour of love! My mum made our wedding cake, put together the favour bottles and we all had a lovely time putting together the table plan. I think there were about 10 different print outs, countless uses of a guillotine!”

“We got married on the SS Great Britain in Bristol, an iconic part of the city’s history and a unique venue. We didn’t want to get married there and not have photographs that did it justice so we picked Martin as he had photographed the venue before and his pictures looked incredible.

Martin was the consummate professional from start to finish. Having our photo taken has never been our favourite thing but Martin made it all very relaxed for us and far more fun than we thought it would be! The ‘talk amongst yourselves’ photos seemed to create impromptu jokes from all our guests which Martin managed to capture. As well as the formal and less formal shots, Martin managed to photograph some incredibly intimate moments throughout the day which it’s so special to be able to see now.

Martin did a brilliant job at getting our pictures back to us quickly. It was maybe a month when we got to see them all. Martin had created a slide show of the best photos and when we watched it, it was like being transported back to the day with all the emotions coming straight back.

Venue and photographer! Our photographs will become our memories of the day and so the best thing to have spent money on!

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

A friend of ours was starting out doing it so helped us out with our ‘boarding passes’ which was great! (and not expensive!)

Yes!

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We had all the types! A classical fruit cake as the main event which looked stunning! We had chocolate cupcakes for those with a sweeter tooth. We then had a tiered cheese cake with crackers and chutney as part of the evening nibbles which went down incredibly quickly!

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We found ‘The Jacks’ on www.warble-entertainment.com. They had a great website with loads of different bands and great videos of what the bands would do.
The Jacks were a fantastic, good time, party band that really made the evening!

Your wedding day is about the 2 of you getting married. Don’t get lost along the journey. Enjoy all of it!!

What’s the best thing about being married?

Actually being married and not having a wedding to plan! (and getting a puppy to start our family!)
