So wedding cars go in and out of fashion. This is the year of the Ford Mustang… who knew?
Fashion is a big thing in weddings – dresses change from year to year (and with huge influences whenever there’s a royal wedding!) – as do suits (we’ve recently shifted from bright blues to softer shades and a focus on luxury fabrics. But cars?
You wouldn’t expect it, but wedding car trends are huge. When the English Wedding Blog was born it was all about the stately old English cars – the Jaguars, Rolls Royce and Bentleys – big old granddaddies of cars full of luxury and upper class upholstery – to go with the traditional mansion wedding venues, obviously.
Now we’re getting married in urban spaces and converted barns, and in festival style tipi celebrations. And our wedding car choices have shifted, subtly and brilliantly, to fit.
English Wedding Directory member BookAclassic has been looking closely at its wedding bookings across the UK and has found that couples now favour the Ford Mustang over more traditional transport choices.
The Ford Mustang has been particularly popular within the last 12 months with bookings for the muscle car increasing 300% on the previous 12 months. The ever-popular Volkswagen Campervan is also doing well on the site and sits just behind the Mustang in terms of number of bookings.
When BookAclassic first launched in the UK, more traditional wedding cars such as the Jaguar Mk2 and Beauford Tourer made up the majority of their bookings. While there’s still plenty of interest in these cars, a lot of couples are stepping away from tradition. Compared to the previous 12 months, the Jaguar has dropped in popularity by 66.7%.
Alongside the Ford Mustang, BookAclassic has seen couples searching for other kinds of American muscle too, including the Chevrolet Impala and Dodge Charger.
It seems couples are stepping away from the traditional wedding car and choosing something with a bit more character. While traditional cars still make up a large percent of bookings, the surge in popularity for muscle cars could be an indicator for how the industry is changing.
Within all the bookings from the last 12 months, there are been some interesting wedding transport choices from couples including the iconic London taxi, Mk1 Golf GTI and classic Fiat 500.
What will you choose as your wedding car? We’ve seen stories of proud Dads sprucing up old classics they’ve had sat in the garage for years, and couples battling through snowed-in country lanes on tractors to make it to the church on time – not to mention that time a vintage bus got stuck under a tiny railway bridge in a Cumbrian village…
