Relaxed vintage glamour for an alternative wedding in Cheltenham, with Oobaloos Photography

Today’s wedding has the most glamorous dress ever, a gorgeous couple and some exquisite details. The reception venue is a highlight: a fabulous party space with tons of character. The cake table is wonderful, the table styling quirky and fun. This is a party spread over several days… and it’s awesome. I think you’re going to love Maddy and Adam’s Cheltenham wedding!

I loved this day. Ever since my first days as a photographer ‘paying her dues’ I have photographed on the steps of Pittville Pump Rooms. Parkfit, fun runs, charity events and Zumba plus numerous family shoots. This park has a special significance to everyone I know in this town.

“All three locations for this wedding felt like home, and the entire day had the atmosphere of being ‘one big happy family’ I love how Maddy and Adam threw tradition to the wind and really did it their way. I am so honoured that they chose me to record their day.”

To accommodate the majority of our guest over the two days we hired No. 38 The Park exclusively. As we had the place to ourselves; and they looked after us so well, we could really relax and enjoy the company of our guest for the whole weekend.

We chose not to have the traditional wedding cake at the reception, instead, we had a dessert table at the party on the Saturday night. I am very lucky that my Maid of Honour owns The Vanilla Pod Bakery : www.vanillapodbakery.com so she made a beautiful selection of sweet treats for our guests to enjoy.

The English Wedding Blog interview: Adam and Maddy

Wedding photographer’s website:

www.weddingphotographyincheltenham.co.uk

How did you choose your photographer?

We loved Sheryl’s work and knew her through a friend so it was a ‘no brainer’ for us to pick her. We loved the relaxed, fun feel that her images portrayed.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

YES! We LOVE our pictures! She captured the two days perfectly. She did so well at photographing the day in such a natural way. Looking back through the pictures we felt like we were living the event all over again. Before the wedding we were nervous about having to pose for photos but Sheryl made us feel completely at ease and a really enjoyable experience.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

We were buzzing all over again! It was great remembering all the moments that we had already forgotten about. Sheryl sent us the full collection just 3 days after the wedding, we weren’t expecting them so quickly so it was a lovely surprise. We were so happy with the pictures and couldn’t wait to share them with family and friends.

Wedding venue:

Ceremony: Pittville Pump Rooms, Cheltenham Spa Reception and accomodation: 38, The Park, Cheltenham Spa Wedding Party: Tithe Barn, Bishops Cleeve

Wedding month:

February

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

An amazing two days shared with all of our loved ones

Your wedding style or theme:

Relaxed Vintage Glamour

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Google! I love google! We also used quite a few suppliers that we knew or were recommended to us. For example, our florist was one of my NCT mummy friends, the caterer for the part was a friend of Adams, and the band were recommended by a work colleague.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Shop around and do your research. We also found that keeping the numbers down really helped. We only had 40 guests to our wedding reception. We also kept things simple and left out some of the items that we personally felt were non essential, like wedding favours. We were keen to have the day we wanted so happily steered away from traditions that everybody has. The definitely helps to keep the costs down,

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We designed it ourselves using an online website that my Maid of Honour suggested www.canva.com We loved being able to put our own stamp on it and the website was so easy to use. We then bought some brown craft paper and printed everything ourselves.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I had my wedding dress made for me and I couldn’t find ‘The One’ in any of the shops. The first time I met with the dressmaker she drew the vision in my head onto paper and THEN I fell in love with it. Five months and ten fittings later I had the perfect dress. Turning my vision into a reality wasn’t always easy as the dress takes time to take shape and sometimes it was difficult to see past the pinned together fabric. I put my trust in Nina and she did an amazing job.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I bought all of my accessories online. This involved a fair bit of purchasing and returning but I was happy with what I had in the end. My favourite accessory was my fur bolero from ‘Coast’. I loved it as it matched perfectly with my dress and gave that hint of glamour that I desired. I had decided early on that I wanted gold sparkly shoes to fit with my theme. I had originally bought some from Debenhams but just a few days before the wedding I decided that they were just too uncomfortable. I ended up popping to BHS and buying the most comfortable gold sparkly peep toes for just £25. They were probably the bargain of the wedding. I kept my jewellery simple with some sparkly diamond earrings and as chance would have it, my mum gave me a matching necklace that morning,

And what did the groom wear?

Adam would’ve been happy wearing jeans but I persuaded him that something a little smarter may be more appropriate for his wedding day! We decided that navy was a good colour for him and would match the bridesmaids. First we bought a navy woollen jacket from Moss Bros in the sale, we then used this as a base to form the rest of his outfit. We matched it with navy trousers also from Moss Bros and a woollen navy waistcoat we bought from ebay and a navy woollen bow tie. We finished it off with brown broques from ASOS.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

Wow that was interesting. My Maid of Honour is very small and another is very tall, so trying to find a dress to suit all was a little challenging. I struck gold when I found the multiway dress from Debenhams. It meant all the girls could wear the dress in a way

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

My usual hairdresser did my hair and one of the bridesmaids did my makeup. I had a few bridal trials at Bobbi Brown which helped me work out the look I wanted to go for and then I purchased the products from them.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

To be honest, flowers were not big on my agenda so I wanted to keep it really simple. I really love gypsophilia and think they are quite wintery so that is what I went with. My friend and florist, Lisa, arranged the flowers for me.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We decided that No.£8, The Park was beautiful just as it was so we did very little there. For the party on the Saturday night at Bishops Cleeve Tythe Barn we used pink up lighters to create a warmth and atmosphere in the room. I was really pleased with how well these worked and actually meant that we didnt need much more decoration in the room. We also hired M & A light up letters which were really effective. My favourite styling piece were the sequin rose gold table runners!

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

Place setting cards with the help of Adam’s best man’s girlfriend who is an art teacher. I really enjoyed making them with her help and do wish I had had a bit more time to make more.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

From the very beginning, one of our essentials for the party was a live band! We used a local band that were recommended and we are so glad we did!” They were great and really got the party started. We had so many compliments about them during the evening and they truky set the atmospher up for the night. They are called ‘Tommy and The Fuse’ www.tommyandthefuse.com

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Keep it simple!! Make sure you concentrate on what you want from your wedding rather than following traditions.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Feeling that little bit closer to each other.
