Sunny flowers and a locally sourced summer wedding in Kent, with Chris Blackledge Photography

Scott and Laura’s summer wedding is so wonderfully pretty! The bright yellows, gorgeous florals and delicate details are guaranteed to brighten your morning. “I adored my fresh flowers – simple countryside yellows and whites – and was gutted that I couldn’t keep them forever.”

Today’s bride and groom are the loveliest couple too – Laura’s beautiful in her wedding gown and you won’t believe where Scott got his super cute suit from! They’ve shared some great advice with us in their English Wedding Blog interview at the end of the feature – don’t miss it, it’s a good one!

“Write a wish list and stick to it! There are so different wedding suppliers out there to tempt you with all sorts of things you’ve never even thought of and you can quickly become convinced that your big day will not be perfect without them! Also, use local/small business suppliers – we found the attention to detail and customer service far superior to the bigger companies as well as the cost being much lower! “

The English Wedding Blog Interview: Scott and Laura

Wedding photographer’s website:

www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

How did you choose your photographer?

We did a little research on the internet and emailed various local photographers (whose portfolios demonstrated a story-telling/documentary style) to arrange meetings. Chris was the first photographer we met and we both loved his easy-going, down to earth personality.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

We were very pleased! Chris provided us with hundreds of beautiful photographs. For a couple who hate having their photographs taken, Chris made us feel so at ease and made the process fun rather than stressful! He listened to exactly what we wanted and made sure that he got all the “essential” shots too.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

Chris emailed us a link to a Dropbox account so that we could preview our photos. We were so excited to look through them all and they brought back wonderful memories of our special day.

Wedding venue:

Tunstall Church, Sittingbourne, Kent

Hempstead House, Sittingbourne, Kent

Wedding month:

August

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Simple, local and traditional with all our favourite people.

Your wedding style or theme:

British simplicity – natural and fresh

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Local wedding fairs and recommendations from friends/family

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Write a wish list and stick to it!

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

We absolutely loved our wedding transport – the 1968 Jaguar MK11 and the 1933 Wolseley 21/60. They even matched our colour scheme perfectly!

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We had such good intentions of making our wedding stationery but life took over and we just didn’t have time. We used Daisy Sheep Shop for much of our wedding stationery – she designed bespoke items according to our likes/dislikes and was so accommodating!

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I didn’t overly enjoy the process of trying on wedding dresses as I’ve never been a “girly girl” and felt very self-conscious in many styles. I knew my dress was “the one” because it was so understated and comfortable – I also adored the lace and the button down back.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

My Jenny Packham shoes were flat (essential for a girl who always wears trainers and a groom who’s only a little taller than the bride!) but beautiful. I also wore a sparkly headband – I had wanted a traditional veil but all I did was keep worrying it would fall out!

I wore my own pearl earrings (Scott had bought me them years earlier) and my Nan’s bracelet on one wrist (something old) and my friend’s (something borrowed) on the other.

My something blue was the blue ribbon in my garter. My friends had bought me a gorgeous one from The Wedding Garter Company and gave it to me on my hen do.

And what did the groom wear? Any recommendations for tailors?

Believe it or not, the groom wore a suit from Primark! We were working on a budget and the colour of this one was exactly what we wanted!

He ordered his waistcoat, tie and pocket square from ebay and bought his shoes from River Island.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

My gorgeous bridesmaids looked lovely in yellow (my favourite colour) dresses from Debenhams.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

My regular hairdresser did my hair – it was important to me to have someone I felt comfortable with and she did a great job. An amazing lady called Hayley from Flame Beauty did all our make-up and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

I adored my fresh flowers – simple countryside yellows and whites – and was gutted that I couldn’t keep them forever. Helen Jury from Floral Dreamz did all of our bouquets, corsages, buttonholes and table arrangements, while the church florist took responsibility for decorating the church.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We kept decoration at the venue quite simple. Hessian and lace table runners, hessian and lace decorated jam jars with fresh flowers, a larger floral arrangement for the top table and ‘Just Married’ hessian bunting. In the bar area of the venue, we displayed childhood photos of ourselves as well as our guest book/drop box frame.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

The most we did was write our place cards and frame our photos – that was enough!

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

Our cake was a four-tier iced sponge cake decorated with daisies and yellow butterflies which matched our simple theme and colour scheme really well. We had chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge varieties. It was delicious!

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

Ian Gladwell (DJ) from Celebration Sounds provided our evening entertainment.

On the day tips and advice:

I think it must be almost impossible but try and stay calm during the morning preparations! Savor every single moment; it is one of the best days of your life but it really does pass by in a blur.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Knowing that we have so many more exciting and happy memories to make together.

  • Do you have 5 minutes to read something really romantic? The story of @durhamroseuk is wonderful: a prospective groom with an idea for the perfect engagement ring, who had to search far and wide and eventually design his own! After quite an adventure in the making, she said yes, they married... and the UK's leading bespoke engagement ring supplier was born! There's a little more to it, including the Dragons Den bit - but you can read all about that on the blog! For now, I'm in LOVE with this pendant Durham Rose created to match one of their bespoke rings.
