Annie & Sam’s beautiful autumn wedding at Athelhampton House, with Linus Moran Photography

Annie and Sam are gorgeous! Their day is just the perfect English wedding – celebrating love in a magnificent venue, surrounded by history and character and by everyone they love. Today’s is a wedding where elegant touches are carefully considered – Annie’s dress is divine, her flowers simple but with intriguing, delicate little tendrils of foliage. And the wonder, the essence of the day comes from Dorset’s beautiful Athelhampton House.

“The day was a joy and creatively refreshing. A familiar venue, a great couple and new artistic opportunities… Being a relatively small wedding, we were lucky to have more time to devote to some relaxed portraits around the grounds. Avoiding as far as possible clichéd locations, we were looking for something new and fresh. Low perspectives won through, shooting through ground covering cyclamens, reflections in pools and finding new walk ways away from the house!” ~ Linus Moran

Linus was amazing! He came over in the morning and captured myself and my bridesmaids getting ready, he stayed through to the wedding reception also capturing our first dance. We didn’t really know he was around throughout the day and he managed to capture all of the most precious moments of our day without really being noticed by anyone. ~ Annie & Sam

Wedding photographer’s website:

How did you choose your photographer?

Initially, we asked Athelhampton if they had any suggestions and they gave us quite a few names of photographers that they know of, we also browsed the internet and asked our friends if they had any recommendations. We had a look at their websites and met up with a couple of them to discuss how they would capture our day. When we met Linus, he was very relaxed and really wanted to know how we would want to remember our day and discussed with us how he would ensure that our day would be captured naturally and when we looked back it would tell a story when looking through the photos.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

We were on our honeymoon and Linus messaged us to say that he was posting a preview of some of our photos on his blog, we were sat on the beach when the message came through. Both Sam and I loved the preview shots and couldn’t wait to see the rest, we could already tell from them that they would all be just the way we imagined. We came back from our honeymoon on Friday lunch time and Linus messaged us that evening to say that they were ready and he was going to send us a link, it was the perfect end to the day.

Wedding venue:

We got married at Athelhampton House in Dorset, it is truly a beautiful location. We had looked at a few options but after we had visited and met the staff there, we knew that it would be the perfect venue for us.To top it off, when Sam had mentioned that he used to cycle past Athelhampton and picture us getting married there, it was the icing on the cake for me. The staff there have all been exceptional throughout all the planning stages right through to the day. We would highly recommend it to anyone that we speak to.

Wedding month:

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

The best day of our lives…!

Your wedding style or theme:

We wanted a rustic theme for our wedding but we also wanted to keep it quite simple. We went for a blush pink and cream colour theme for the day, which was included in the flowers, outfits and even kept the homemade table plan and hearts guest book in theme.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

We were lucky with our suppliers, they were either friends or they were recommended to us as a family friend. The only supplier that was picked was the lady that designed and made our cake, we found her business on Facebook and when I contacted her she was extremely friendly and helpful.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

There are lots of tips and advice for saving money for your wedding that we read about, several online blogs and in magazines. It’s hard to not get carried away with a lot of things but for us I think it was more saving where we could so for example making table plans and the guest book. The other thing that we would suggest is to decide together what the most important things are to you both for your wedding i.e flowers or a photographer etc. It will allow you to keep them in mind when you are setting your “budget” or deciding on how much you would like to spend on certain things or where you could perhaps save a few pennies.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

We hadn’t been on holiday since 2009 and so we knew we wanted to have a longer holiday than normal so we booked 10 nights in the Seychelles, it was absolute paradise and we didn’t want to come back home. The other main thing to us was a photographer, as we wanted to make sure that we would always keep the memories and so wanted to find a photographer that most suited the style that we wanted.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We bought our save the dates and wedding invitations from a company called norma&dorothy. The design we went for was similar for both and was a rustic theme which we liked, their customer service was fantastic and they are good value for money. For the table places, we put the guests place names as a tag on their sweet jar table favours – saved a few extra pennies having it all as one.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

Absolutely! I actually bought my wedding dress before we had found a venue or even set a date. We got engaged in December 2015 and in early January I went to try some different styles on. When I first walked in to the shop I was immediately drawn to a dress which I hung up to try on. I tried on 11 dresses, the first one I spotted in the shop was the last one I tried on and I knew it was the one.

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

Sincerity style 3730 which I bought from Pascali Bridal Boutique in Poole, Dorset.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I didn’t wear much jewellery as I had a lot of detailing on my dress I didn’t feel that I wanted much. My shoes were called “Esme – the brand is Rainbow Club”, I wanted my hair up and styles so I bought a pearl flower hair grip from Debenhams. My sister-in-law bought me a beautiful Swarovski bracelet which was absolutely stunning and finished off my look perfectly.

And what did the groom wear?

The groom hired suits from Moss Bros, which were blue/grey colour which the shop name “sharkskin colour”. The best man and the three ushers also worse the same suits, with brown leather shoes. The men had pink ties and pink pocket squares which matched really well to the blush pink theme.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

I had one bridesmaid and a maid of honour, they both wore Jenny Packham dresses, which were light purple embellished maxi dresses- they were absolutely stunning.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

I am lucky and have some very lovely friends which did both. My bridesmaids, mother in law and my hair was all done by a friend who was absolutely amazing. My other friend Shanie did our make up and again it was absolutely everything I imagined and the overall look was perfect.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Neither of us wanted anything too fancy or too much, my maid of honour recommended a family friend to us and when we first met her we knew that her business would ensure that our flowers would be perfect. We had cream and pink Avalanche roses, cream freesias and gypsophelia with foliage and fillers. We had flowers as our table centrepieces and they went well with our rustic theme and were simple but elegant.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

Athelhampton really speaks for itself in a lot of ways so we didn’t want to decorate it too much. Where we had our ceremony we didn’t need any decoration other than the flower arrangement that we had on the signing table, which we actually used on our top table later. We wanted to keep it quite simple and didn’t really feel the need to add too much to any room as it really is a truly beautiful building and location.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

We made the table plan by buying a frame, some card and some thick twine and stapled it all together and printed the names on to craft card and pegged the cards on to the twine, was a very simple idea but very effective and we can use the frames again at home. We didn’t want a “guestbook” so we bought another frame and piece of card to make another frame similar to the one for the table plan and then we purchased some wooden hearts for our family and friends to write messages on. Since the wedding we have purchased box frames to put these hearts in to so we can have these messages on a wall in our house.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We had cupcakes and a small single tiered cake at the top. The cupcakes were from M&S, they were cream and rose pink which fitted in well with our theme and we found a cake supplier to make us a small 6inch cake top put at the top of our cupcake stand. The supplier (Baking Aces) also made us sugar flowers which matched the flowers that I had in my bouquet, centre pieces and the corsages.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We had a band called The Leggomen for our evening entertainment, they got all our guests up singing and dancing and we all had such a great time.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

The biggest thing that everyone said to both us of before the big day was to make sure you enjoy every second of it because it will go by so quickly, so we did. It was one of the best things to be aware of because there is so much planning and preparation that goes with a wedding that when you get to the big day enjoying all the hard work you put in is very rewarding and makes it extra special.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Sam and I have been together for over 10 years and so married life is just the same as before. However, we have made some extra special memories with our friends and family on our wedding day that we will never forget.
