A story made up of endless beautiful moments - Morden Hall wedding by York Place Studios documentary wedding photographers London (14)

Should you polish your wedding? An odd question, I know – but think with me for a moment. In these days of Instagramming our lives and sharing only the carefully planned, tidy, and perfect sides of ourselves I kind of miss seeing photos that make me feel something. A gorgeous line of bridesmaids, a pristine wedding gown or a messy bouquet are all glorious to see on insta… but amongst all the wedding pretty, I love seeing a photo which will make me laugh out loud, scroll back up for another look or even identify with the people in the frame. And that has to be a real, spontaneous, unpolished wedding photograph.

It’s why I’m such a big fan of York Place Studios. They’re not about the pretty details – they capture the story of your day in the most fascinating compositions. They’re the wedding photographers most wedding photographers would choose to photograph their day. They shoot with real expertise and a flash of humour. They’re brilliant; their brides and grooms LOVE them – and they keep my little wedding blogging feet firmly on the ground.

However stunning the location or decoration, it’s the bride and groom, their family and friends that really make for a great wedding, everything else is secondary – so say the fabulous documentary wedding photographers York Place Studios.

Today’s wedding has an amazing little ninja page boy in a head to toe gold costume (awesome), an actual bandstand, some bemused pic-nic-ers (how on earth do I spell that?!) and the most gorgeous bride and groom in like, ever. Plus the best atmosphere you could dream of… and it all comes across so beautifully in the photos.

The venue? Battersea Park Pump House. What an amazing spot to get married! Although really – as the happiness shining out from today’s pics totally shows – it doesn’t matter where you’re married, because it’s just all about sharing the best moment of your life with the folks you love.

Lovely John Mottershaw is lucky enough to live in the beautiful Peak District national park, one of England’s most breathtaking landscapes. I was born there; it’s a place close to my heart and one I’d love to explore more – so I’m happy to say we’ll be featuring some glorious Peak District weddings over the next few months, thanks to John and his gorgeous brides and grooms!

John Mottershaw Photography has a refreshingly informal approach compared with other wedding photographers:

I believe the photography should be an enjoyable part of the wedding and I aim to make the actual taking of the photographs as special as I want the photographs themselves to be. This is important to me in creating story-telling that is a treasured souvenir of your wonderful day.

From his base in the Peak District, close to Chesterfield and Sheffield, John enjoys travelling to weddings all around the UK. He told me his is a family business: there has been a wedding photographer in the Mottershaw family for many decades and their love of photography dates back as far as 1870!

Lizzie and Nilo’s wedding is as beautifully traditional in style as it is epic in the party stakes… and the images are simply, elegantly wonderful. With a lot of Brazilians coming over for the wedding, Lizzie and Nilo wanted a really classical English setting, and the venue was certainly that – lots of oak paneled wood and decorative shields – exactky what they were aiming for.

The thing I love most about weddings is capturing the emotion – I really do love it when people let their guard down and show their true feelings in such an open way – and this one definitely had that. I’m not sure if it was the Brazilian twist to things, but the Groom, Nilo, had no qualms about showing exactly how overcome with emotion he was. It was beautiful to see. Plus they had Brazilian dancers, a magician, Lizzie’s mum sang an opera tune, and Nilo ended up on the drums!

Ian says “I like my photos to tell you about a moment. To tell you about a person. To make you feel like you were there. Photos will bring back memories and help to tell a story, which is why I love photographing weddings… I come away with a collection of moments and memories in my camera.”

I love wedding portraits: those romantic images of the happy couple totally wrapped up in each other or exploring their wedding venue and glorious surroundings. Most often what sings to my heart is the photography: beautiful lighting or an unusual setting can make a wedding portrait stand out so much.

As a wedding blogger I see so many portraits: some are posed and some natural; some are incredible, and some are more traditional and romantic. Sometimes I see wedding portraits which are even a little different from the norm… and then once in a blue moon I see something which blows my mind. You’ll love these: 20 unique wedding portraits from the supremely talented UK wedding photographers who form 20Collective. Enjoy.

A photographer’s best friend has and always will be light, even more so when it’s the famous golden hour and that light is yummy and glowing orange! This was just the case for Jane and Sue’s gorgeous Worcestershire wedding at the incredible Out to Grass site. It was late evening in the middle of summer, guests were kicking back after a feast, and me, Jane and Sue went to sit in the long grass overlooking a killer sunset for 20 minutes.
