I do love a venue with character, don’t you? Pretty blank canvas spaces are all well and good, but show me somewhere with a stage, balconies, pillars and old world charm… and I’m sold! Today’s wedding from Salomon’s Estate in Tunbridge Wells is unique, exciting and beautifully photographed by our friend and sponsor lovely Penny Young Photography. Amy is such a stunning bride; Carl her perfect match – and oh, those flowers too!

Carl hand made the giant ROPE letter lights over a few weeks, and they were popular with our guests and us – he enjoyed making them, and we had a bit of help from a few friends to finish them off, but when they turned into Disco lights in the evening it was great to see our new “name in lights” so to speak!

I love to start the week with an amazing wedding to completely knock your little socks off and take your mind off work! If you’ve had enough of the daily grind already, then this beautiful celebration is guaranteed to brighten your day and add a little spring to your steps!

Beautiful Beckie and Max were married at Cooling Castle Barn in March last year. Their spring wedding is wonderful – another (we’re on a roll this week!) which absolutely proves you can have a stunning bouquet this early in the season – in fact I’d say spring is my favourite for bouquet inspiration!

The flowers are by the very fabulous Distinctly Floral, based in Hadlow, Kent. Amanda has a wonderful talent for colourful floral design – I thoroughly recommend following her on Facebook for tons of lovely floral inspiration. Amanda dressed the ceremony and reception rooms for Beckie and Max with soft lilacs, dusky pinks and white blooms. The colour palette for Beckie’s bouquet is wonderfully soft, and I love how textured and mixed it is – each individual bloom is just perfect! The blossom trees for the ceremony came from Floral Explosion – they look fab in the pictures, don’t you think?!

I think it was the little birds on the table stationery which I fell in love with first. Then I saw how gorgeous Lizzy and Josh were, how beautifully they’d incorporated countryside touches and bright, colourful styling into their day – and I was smitten. This is a stunning wedding from beautiful Sussex venue Chafford Park, with our lovely friend and English Wedding Blog sponsor Penny Young behind the camera. Grab a cuppa, settle down somewhere cosy and enjoy!

Handmade was a big part of our day – the venue is in a beautiful setting, but is a blank canvass. We wanted it to very feel personal to us, and to enjoy a full year of preparations. We picked our own flowers at Blooming Green and arranged into mismatched jugs, just using tape to give structure instead of oasis. We also made our own buttonholes, boutonnieres, flower girl basket and bouquets.

Alex and Duncan’s summer wedding is super sweet and pretty with daisy bouquets (I’m so in love with daisies this year!) and simple, elegant styling touches. The gorgeous couple married at Winters Barns in Canterbury and chose my lovely friend and sponsor Penny Young to photograph their day.

“My florist was Chantelle Gadd who works at Contemporary Flowers, Kent. I wanted something extremely simple yet beautiful so went for gypsophila and white roses. Chantelle collected the hundreds of glass jars I had saved and wrapped in twine, and then brought them filled to the venue and arranged them for me. She was amazing!

We spent a long time looking online for a photographer – it’s so difficult because there are just so many photographers out there! We wanted to find a style of photography that really suited us us a couple and knew that posed, formal photographs were definitely not our thing. All of Penny and Jim’s photographs online were beautiful in their own right and had appeared to capture moments without being noticed which we liked.

Nearly all of my clients tell me that they want natural looking wedding photos, lots of real emotion, laughter and tears, and nothing too posed or cheesy looking.

Well, there’s no secret to achieving this: basically if you’re relaxed, stress free and having a great time on your wedding day then it’ll come shining through in your photos.

Here’s a few tips that you can put in place before the big day to help you get ready for a wonderful relaxed wedding.

Leave some breathing room in your timeline so that you don’t feel rushed.

In my experience most wedding timelines run behind by at least 15 minutes but normally more. If you pad your timings then everything you’ve planned will happen seamlessly and without stress.

For example, get into your dress 10 or 15 minutes before you think you need to as it always takes longer than you think.

I love this wedding, the blues, the pretty bouquet and all of the wonderful handmade touches. Rachel and Damian are a gorgeous couple – and then there’s the venue. Oh, my word – what a fabulous space to celebrate in!!

“We were incredibly fortunate that a family friend, who lives next door to the church we got married in, offered her garden and barns to us. It was such a naturally beautiful and down-to-earth space that we knew without looking anywhere else that it was the place for us. We had the meal in an open barn and then the evening dancing and drinks were opposite in the old barn and marquees. It was very open to the elements and in the whole month leading up to the wedding it was incredibly wet and windy so there were lots of weather-proofing and contingency discussions but in the end we were very lucky with the weather!”

Penny Young is a Kent based photographer, documenting beautiful wedding stories all across the South East and sometimes further afield.

“Weddings are about capturing real and unique relationships and no two weddings are the same which is the thing that I love the most.

I’m always looking to capture real moments with real emotion in a beautiful and authentic way. Wedding photos should be a record of not only how a day looked but also how it felt for the couple.

Where to begin

The home page of the English Wedding Blog – http://english-wedding.com – shows the most recent articles I’ve published. Most are real weddings, with the occasional styled ideas shoot or supplier feature. They’re organised by date with the most recent at the top, and there’s a link at the bottom of the page to ‘older posts’.

Reading the blog this way is lovely… like flicking through a magazine where you know you’ll stumble across something wonderful 🙂

A few weeks ago I fell head over heels in love with My Fayre Favourite: real vintage accessories given new life by designer Charlotte, and sold worldwide in her Etsy shop. I’m sooo thrilled to be able to show you her beautiful one-off designs as part of a gorgeous and inspiring vintage shoot at Sprivers Mansion in Kent.

The shoot features the work of a brilliant group of wedding suppliers from the Kent area, and every little detail is carefully placed and fits the style of the Georgian inspired country manor like a velvet glove.

I love Kate and Andy – for their choice of wedding venue (squeeeal!) and their gorgeous styling touches. This wedding – my second from Finchcocks Musical Museum – is breathtaking! With lots and lots of styling touches to inspire you, and beautiful images by Penny Young Photography, it’s already a favourite for 2015.

Styling touches are beautifully simple and very “English summer garden” with sweet peas picked from Kate’s parent’s garden and arranged by a very talented and multi-skilled hairdresser! Other touches are ever so pretty and I’m sure will inspire so many of you: the marquee was decorated with flowers in jam jars and metres and metres of bunting made by Kate’s mum.

The stars of today’s English Wedding Blog are, in this order:

  1. Kate and Andy. Stunning
  2. Finchcocks Musical Museum and that awesome be-buntinged piano!
  3. The cat. I asked for the photo especially… so adorable!
  4. Kate’s mum. Creative genius.

Samantha and Edward’s wedding is just gorgeous. Samantha describes their style as ‘traditional country chic’ – the perfect label for a deliciously done, classic English wedding.

They married in the summer, choosing delicate pastel colours and focusing on beautiful flowers in their wedding theme. I love Samantha’s advice about ‘the little things’ – she told me it’s the people, the food and the music which matter most of all. I love her comment about her Stewart Parvin dress though: “It was amazing and I wish I could wear it all the time.” She looks incredible. (And hey, why not wear it again? I would!)

When I look back at some of my old images I cringe – big time. If I was still writing the way I did three years ago my businesses would be buried at the bottom of the internet and desperately clutching at bargain basement brides. Because everything changes.

In the wedding industry change comes so fast – never mind that vintage has been around for years, everything else has changed. And by the skin of my teeth I’ve managed to keep up. How? Because I innovate, and change, and watch trends, and never stop inventing and being creative.

Frustration or innovation?

As a wedding business owner there are two paths you can take: you can innovate, update your style and business practices to keep up with everyone else (or if you’re lucky, lead the pack!). Or you can stick to what you know and fall behind. That’s the road to frustration.
