Happy Wednesday, lovelies! I thought today I’d share something a little different with you. I have a confession to make: I’m shy. I’m shy of putting my face out there on the internet, I’m not a wannabe celebrity – just a girl who loves the beauty and creativity of weddings. So I hide behind the blog and rarely show my face! But it’s been a while since I published a personal post on the blog, and about time I introduced myself to those of you who are new to English Wedding. Welcome, by the way!

So I’m Claire. I’m a calligrapher and wedding blogger. I’m not married (yet!) and I live on the edge of the Lake District, in a little coastal village in south Cumbria. I’ve been writing English Wedding for 10 years now – I started the blog back in 2009 when there were literally 3 wedding blogs in the UK. Even before then, I’d been writing calligraphy for weddings for 4 years – and I still do!

I don’t really talk about me much, so I thought maybe I should come out from hiding behind my screen and tell you / show you who I am and a little bit more about me! Feel free to ignore if you’re looking for wedding dress inspo… but please read on if you’d like me to make your wedding invitations!

Hi! I’m Claire. I write the English Wedding Blog. This is me.

That was the path to the beach, which starts at the end of the road my house is on. I spend a lot of time there and pretend it’s on the way to the post office. It isn’t – the post office is ten minutes walk away but I go the scenic (beach) way which takes twenty.

This is my desk. This is where I’m sat writing the blog right now. I don’t have a laptop – my old one got a bit burny one day so I upgraded to a device which I can only work on while I’m sat at my desk. It helps work life balance a LOT!

Coastal wedding ideas in Cornwall with Andrea Kuehnis Photography (16)

To celebrate my birthday earlier this year we spent a week exploring the Cornish coast – fabulous sunsets, glorious beaches and dramatic scenery made it one of the most amazing holidays I’ve ever known. So today’s wedding inspiration has my heart (and a little of my calligraphy! Thank you Andrea!), and I hope you love it too!Claire

One of my most favorite places is Cornwall. I found myself stunned by the beauty, the wild coast, the cold water and the wild wind, and also the rain! Cornwall is inspiring, and popular with so many famous novelists who lost their hearts to its natural beauty.

Jade and Brad are both from Cornwall, met way back in school, were friends for so many years and finally started dating when they were 19 years old. Engaged for 6 years, they had to wait quite a while until they got married. During this time, their sweet daughter Orla (irish for Golden Princess) was born. They are both such a wonderful and energetic couple, loving life and so happy about their future lives together.

Every word handwritten…

Printed wedding stationery doesn’t necessarily mean mass produced, but you definitely get a very special personal touch when you hire a calligrapher for your wedding.

90% of what I do here in my little studio is by hand, one letter at a time, with an element of alchemy in mixing inks and choosing papers where they’ll sit just so… and every morning when I sit at my desk I fall back in love with my work.

Calligraphy is every bit as therapeutic, rewarding and exciting as you could imagine – and if you don’t fancy having a go yourself you can still just as easily fall in love with delicate modern lettering written especially for you.

These little pieces were written by me, in my little calligraphy studio on the edge of the Lake District. The gold ink shines gently in sunlight; the black hand-torn card is perfect for a boho or country wedding – and ideal for darker or wooden tables where a little more impact is needed for your guests’ place settings.

This is a little sneak peek into my other life: when I’m not typing I have an old-fashioned pen in my hand… an ink pot, blots on my face, like in the 19th century. I’m not a monk: I’m a calligrapher. I write wedding place names, address envelopes, calligraphy wedding readings and vows as keepsakes and wedding day gifts, and design bespoke wedding stationery for intimate weddings.

Wedding calligraphy in pale grey handwritten by Claire Gould photo by Susan Arnold (14)

One of my favourite styles for calligraphy suites and wedding stationery this year is pale grey, graceful lettering with a hint of days gone by. I love to write in the style of an old love letter: casual, flowing scripts with elegance and old English charm.

This is a look you can easily incorporate into your wedding – and calligraphy is the perfect finishing touch. I designed and lettered an invitation suite on the palest grey stationery: a beautiful dove grey with ink a shade or two lighter to give the perfect contrast and create a soft look.
