If you read the blog on Monday you’ll know I was still feeling blissfully relaxed and spoilt after a wonderful weekend courtesy of The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa in Grasmere. Regular readers will know the Lake District is my home, and every other (sunny!) weekend I’m to be found with my guy wandering up and down the mountains here. So to be offered a relaxing break on a rainy Saturday in February was a dream come true – and while we couldn’t tick off any summits this weekend, we had the most amazing time exploring Grasmere and The Wordsworth so we could tell you all about the place here on English Wedding.

For those of you who haven’t been to the Lakes, Grasmere is one of our most picturesque villages, nestled in between high mountains and two of the prettiest little lakes. Most buildings here date from the 19th or early 20th century, and the village is famous for being home to William Wordsworth. It’s basically a destination for a ‘home from home’ wedding on UK shores – ideal for couples who’d like to travel a little but without the hassle of flying – and perfect for a weekend wedding.

I know a lot of you lovely brides and grooms to be live in and around Buckinghamshire – and today I have a very special feature for all of you. The charming folks at Stoke Place asked if we could come and visit their magnificent wedding venue and write about it on the blog. Luckily I was having an email chat with wedding photographer Damion Mower on the same day (Damion is one of our recommended wedding photographers and a regular feature on English Wedding) and he very kindly went along on behalf of us all to have a nosey around and tell us all about Stoke Place! – Damion, thank you! – It’s an incredibly beautiful venue with a choice of ceremony rooms and extensive landscaped gardens… as you’re about to see from the photos Damion took for us.

Nestled in the gorgeous Buckinghamshire countryside, approximately 30 minutes outside of London is the stunning Stoke Place country house. If you’re in the throes of deciding on your wedding venue then a visit to Stoke Place should certainly be on your shortlist. As you drive into the 26 acre estate you’re greeted by a mature row of hornbeam trees leading you to the country house.

For those seeking true exclusivity, Ox Pasture Hall is available for exclusive use and with 32 bedrooms offering sumptuous accommodation for you & your guests, you may not want to leave! Licensed for civil ceremonies, both inside and out, this stunning venue can be tailored exactly as you wish, no matter how elaborate or different you want your big day to be.

I wish I could have taken you with me on Tuesday when I went to visit Broadoaks Country House in the Lake District. Since I came to live on the edge of the Lakes in 2012 I’ve visited a few venues but nothing comes close to the charm of this little gem. Broadoaks Country House is described as “one of the most romantic hotels in the UK” by the AA. The website promises “secluded gardens, a magical beck that runs through our grounds and the Lake District scenery… the perfect backdrop for romantic photographs”. And oh my goodness do they deliver on those promises, with bells on!

A Lake District wedding venue with real charm and unique style

The drive up to Broadoaks Country House is fun (especially in my Mini!) – winding country roads lead from the touristy madness of Bowness on Windermere away from the crowds and into rolling countryside. Broadoaks appears on the horizon and with its green lawn and traditional fountain looks ever so lovely from the very first moment.

I should reintroduce English Wedding blog venue reviews as it’s been a little while since the last one. If you’re new to the blog (hello!) I ask wedding photographers to review wedding venues they know. It’s a great way to get an expert opinion of a wedding venue and its facilities, charm and atmosphere.

Howard Wedding Photography: Matara Venue Review

Matara is a unique and stunning wedding venue set within 28 acres of parkland in the South Cotswolds. Offering a casual and relaxed atmosphere, couples are encouraged to express themselves in their own unique way on their wedding day.

“Many brides and grooms who choose Matara are looking for something different that reflects their personal values and it is designed in such a special manner that it mirrors its foundations in nature and the value of continual exploration and creativity. With bamboo flooring, fragrant courtyard areas and original pieces of art, to the multitude of windows spreading natural light throughout the building, Matara is an unforgettable place.

Photographer Martin Beddall’s Kirtlington Park venue review

“Driving up the long driveway leading towards Kirtlington Park feels like you’ve found a hidden treasure. An imposing Grade 1 listed Palladian mansion, this wedding venue hasn’t been snapped up by some multinational hotel chain and sanitised.

Fawsley Hall is a luxury country house in Northamptonshire, combining Knightley Court for smaller, chic weddings and the Main House at Fawsley Hall for luxury celebrations. Parts of the hall date from the 15th century – its history is dotted with barons and viscounts and ladies… needless to say it’s a magnificent wedding venue today.

Sarah Vivienne’s thoughts on Fawsley Hall

Sarah Vivienne, a wedding photographer from Northampton told me, “Fawsley Hall is one of my favourite Northamptonshire wedding venues.

“It’s set in the rolling countryside and looks very majestic standing on top of the hill as you approach.

“From a wedding photographer’s point of view it has gorgeous landscaped grounds for family photos and relaxed pictures as well as dramatic architecture and interiors for more styled Bride and Groom shots and wet weather photos.

I work at Fawsley Hall regularly but am never stuck for different ideas for each client.”

Sarah Vivienne’s thoughts on Rushton Hall

Northampton wedding photographer Sarah Vivienne says: “I love working at Rushton Hall. The team there are excellent and really look after you. It’s a very flexible venue with lots of spaces to accommodate different types and sizes of wedding. They have a civil licence so you can get married there too.

Rushton Hall has lots of great spots for gorgeous wedding photographs, inside and out, so whatever the weather there’s lots of opportunities. The grounds are beautiful, really well maintained and with interest all year round. The Hall itself, and the interior, has some stunning architecture which makes for really interesting backgrounds in your portraits. The 4-poster bedroom suites are fabulous and worth a picture too!”

Wedding photographer Rebecca Honeywell’s review of Goldsborough Hall

Rebecca says, “Goldsborough Hall is a gorgeous stately home set in beautiful grounds, with views over the North Yorkshire countryside. Brides and grooms have the luxury of having the whole venue to themselves, with exclusive use of the house and grounds for the day – you feel like a king and queen!

I have the unique viewpoint of both wedding photographer and bride, as I was one of the first people to have my reception at Goldsborough Hall in July 2007. We chose the venue as we loved the grand yet intimate feel, and we were not disappointed. There are several luxurious bedrooms for the bride (and groom) to get ready in, complete with sunken baths overlooking the gardens!

Photographer thoughts on Rookery Hall

Adam from ARJ Photography says, “I was impressed by the grandeur of Rookery Hall (not untypical of a Cheshire wedding venue!), and the real mixture of old and new. They hold ceremonies in the older hall and then you go over for your wedding reception in the more modern wing.

“From a wedding photography perspective (which is where I come in!) it’s a great venue – loads of areas for group shots and couple shots, and lots of nice countryside backdrops for the natural reportage photography, as well as really nicely lit rooms for the ceremony and wedding reception.”
