Engagement shoots are not only a great chance to get to know your wedding photographer and how they work, they also really help couples feel at ease in front of the camera. Most of my couples really don’t like the thought of having their photo taken and feel a bit uneasy about the prospect of couple shots during their wedding.

What’s great about having a pre-wedding shoot is that you find how just how natural it can be. You can find out what works for you when it comes to poses and we have the luxury of time so I can guide you on what looks great. Then, when it comes to your big day, you naturally fall into the poses that suit you best.

What to wear for your engagement shoot

When you’re choosing your outfits, keep your location in mind. So, if you’re having your engagement shoot in a woodland then you would want to avoid wearing green!

Do you remember the moment one of you said yes? When suddenly you’d made that first step towards a lifetime together, and your heart was fit to burst with being so much in love? Stepping from being just a couple head over heels in love and enjoying every small adventure together, into planning a wedding can be… daunting. It’s so, so important to keep making amazing memories as you plan your wedding – and I think an engagement shoot is the perfect way to capture some of the romance and excitement of your pre-wedding months.

There are many, many reasons to have a photoshoot before your wedding. It’s a great way to get to know your photographer, relax in front of the camera, perhaps explore your venue  or just have a fun day out.

From the romance of Yorkshire to the magic of Florence… I couldn’t resist sharing this enchanting engagement shoot by lovely destination wedding photographer Rik Pennington.

Rik Pennington Photography (1) I’ll never forget the times I spent living in Italy as a student. I visited Florence from my home in Trieste, and loved the hustle and bustle – but photographer Rik, along with gorgeous couple (ridiculously so… aren’t they?) Giorgia and Filippo explored the quieter streets, full of real untouched Italian charm and atmosphere.

Are there favourite secret places you’d love to explore in your home town or on a destination shoot? I have a few ideas of my own…

We’ve had such beautiful weather recently, and many of you have had your engagement shoots over recent weeks. Two of my favourites from the English Wedding Showcase are a world of contrasts: from glorious spring sunshine to dramatic twilight…

True love: engagement photography by Martin Beddall on the English Wedding Showcase

Above: Heidi and Toby’s Kent engagement shoot with wedding photographer Martin Beddall – beautifully sunny and light, although Martin introduced it on the English Wedding Blog with the words “probably means more snow soon”. Thanks Martin!

Below: Mark and Erin’s engagement shoot near Warrington – a clear evening with deliciously blue skies. I love their feet in this picture! And the blue is dreamy and so romantic. By McAvoy Photography.

Romance at twilight: engagement photography by McAvoy Photography on the English Wedding Showcase

I don’t feature engagement or pre-wedding photography very often on English Wedding Blog, but there have been some beautiful shoots from my wedding photographer sponsors on the Showcase recently, and I urge you to go and have a look if you’re planning or considering an engagement shoot of your own. Charlotte Balbier engagement blog (15)

I’m way over the top excited about this little blog post. Fabulous bridal designer Charlotte Balbier has announced her engagement to the love of her life Teddy Bedford. Having lived a real life ‘Sliding Doors’, growing up around the corner from each other, Charlotte and Teddy are now going to be busy making plans – quite possibly for a gorgeous winter wedding day.

It’s always big news when someone so popular in the wedding industry gets engaged… there’s a real buzz around Charlotte and Teddy’s engagement and we can’t wait to find out more about their plans over the next few months. This is far more exciting for me than any celeb weddings that might have happened in 2011!

Charlotte Balbier is at the forefront of UK bridal design, with her latest ‘Candy Kisses’ collection a dream of vintage inspired French lace, rose pinks and contemporary styles, slinky red carpet glamour and timeless elegance. I love Charlotte’s designs to bits – and I’m delighted that Charlotte has shared a little exclusive proposal story with English Wedding blog!

I’m a huge advocate of intimate weddings. A wedding with your very closest friends and family will always have that very relaxed, very loving atmosphere – as captured so well in Clare and Rob’s Liverpool wedding.

First of all, their engagement shoot and sneak peek of the wedding day for you. Later today I’ll blog the wedding… so pop back later this afternoon to see the romance of their day unfold.

Billy’s web-wide wanderings took him to one of our recommended wedding photographer‘s blogs this week – none other than Anneli Marinovich.

The shoot that caught his eye was Terri and David’s engagement shoot, with some lovely backdrops and excellent props.

We love the cheeky expressions, the confidence and closeness of Terri and David… but most of all we love the books. Brilliant! Always take props for an engagement shoot, always!

Days to go: 30

Yes that’s right people. Only 30 days to go! In exactly one month we’ll be getting married! Time really is flying now. And what better time to show you the full engagement shoot we indulged in last weekend!

I must first take this time to tell you about our LEGEND of a photographer – Phil Barber. He captured our personalities in these photos absolutely perfectly and frankly, I really don’t know how he did it so well. I had visions in my head of how these photos would look for months and Phil has surpassed all expectations and given us something we are so very proud of because of how it reflects us and the time we spent together that day. We’ll remember that morning for so many different reasons – it was like I fell in love with Richard all over again. If an engagement shoot does anything, it forces you to take time out of all the wedding planning and your hectic life styles and just spend some time together and enjoy each other’s company. It also gives you the valuable chance to discuss the style of your wedding photos with your photographer. I can’t tell you how excited I am about how our wedding photos are going to turn out!

My favourite image: the bridges in Castlefield are instantly recognisable

My favourite image from this e-shoot: the bridges in Castlefield are instantly recognisable, Alexis and Adam are so into each other (and I love the damp Mancunian in the foreground too!)

E-shoot week has been so much fun – it’s been great to feature something different and I hope you’ve been enjoying the variety! But it doesn’t stop there… today I’m delighted to be sharing Alexis and Adam’s pre-wedding shoot in Castlefield, otherwise known as Manchester’s Official Department of Cool.

Alexis and Adam are a very good looking couple, stylish and a pretty perfect match if you ask me! They’re also up for a laugh and that’s how you should approach your e-shoot. If you’re ready for anything you’ll have a great time and get fantastic photography out of your day.

This being Manchester, it rained. In fact no, it poured. It does. But photographer Jonny Draper says it’s important to him to shoot an engagement shoot when it’s booked, no matter what the weather does – it’s a reassurance for couples that come rain or shine, they’ve chosen their wedding photographer well for his reliability as well as for the amazing images he’ll create with them on the day.
