What makes a wedding craft business successful? Every time, it comes down to the personality behind the name. The best wedding suppliers are dedicated, inspiring and entertaining. It’s no secret that we usually follow a different path in life: it takes courage as much as craftsmanship to bring a wedding craft business to life. I asked Tracey Phillips at Bridal Designs to share her personal story. Tracey’s business began with her sister’s wedding 8 years ago, and she’s now a multiple award-winning wedding business owner.

“I live in beautiful North Devon, minutes from the seaside and a short distance from some of England’s most charming wedding venues. Northcote Manor is just around the corner – and I can’t imagine a more beautiful place to get married.

Every now and then I see a wedding which sort of freaks me out. It’s usually on a US blog, highly styled and coordinated with every detail imaginable. The freaky bit? Seven girls with matching hair, shoes, flowers and dresses. I prefer something more interesting…

Matching bridesmaids freak me out

Perhaps it’s a control thing. Perhaps it’s because matching dresses sort of look like wedding uniforms. Perhaps I just love colour and creativity and the fact that everyone is designed to be different.

Traditional bridesmaid dress retailers – think Dessy and House of Fraser – realise that girls come in all shapes and sizes and sell dresses in the same fabric and colour but different styles. That’s not so bad – at least it gives girls a little more freedom to choose.

So many of the crafty people I know, follow and admire live by the seaside. There’s something in every seaside town and village which inspires our creative spirits – and if you’re looking for inspiration then you can’t beat a trip to the beach, trust me! One thing I have in common with Bridal Designs owner Tracey Phillips is our love of the seaside. We’re both just a short hop away from the beach; Tracey’s based in beautiful Devon, where she crafts her pretty and delicate bridal jewellery.

This pretty range is perfect for a summer wedding, and would look stunning at a beach ceremony! Made using curved white Swarovski pearls, sparkling Aquamarine Swarovski crystals, powder blue Swarovski pearls, and gorgeous Pacific Opal Swarovski crystals for a washed sea glass look, it is a lovely relaxed bridal jewellery collection for those hot sunny days.

Ever wondered how you’d cope without your bridesmaids? In these crafty times the responsibilities of the average bridesmaid have changed: many of you will be spending weekends and evenings with your best girls covered in glue and lace, helping you make all kinds of decorative touches for your big day. Second only to your partner and your parents, bridesmaids are there for you all the way and I think we should celebrate them more!

Your bridesmaid is worth her weight in gold. She’ll come to bridal shops, join in your Pinterest obsession, help you find suppliers, trudge around wedding fairs and keep you sane when all the planning gets overwhelming.

You’ll always remember the laughs you and your best girls have in the run up to your wedding – from trips to Hobbycraft right up to your hen night. Your chief bridesmaid has the best job of all: planning a hen night to bring all your best girl friends together for anything from glamping to go-karting. So I think bridesmaids deserve the biggest thank you of all!

Happy Friday-eve-afternoon, everyone! We begin our weekend celebrations early here at English Wedding Blog HQ you know! – me and the cats, that is… before we clock off for the afternoon though, I wanted to ask this little question: is your wedding jewellery vegan?

I know. You probably haven’t considered whether any goats were hurt in the making of your flower crown*, but vegan-friendly wedding jewellery is a valid concern for many brides.

*unlikely, don’t worry

Tracey from Bridal Designs has written about this after a bride got in touch to ask where her pearls were sourced from. Tracey uses Swarovski pearls, which are respected quality faux pearls used by many jewellery and dress designers.

Real pearls can have issues, as intensive farming of oysters sounds a little dangerous for the poor little creatures… read a brief explanation over at Bridal Designs and while you’re there why not buy one of those lovely bubble bracelets too?

Think package deal and what usually springs to mind is a cheap holiday with free drinks and  ‘guaranteed to give you food poisoning’  seafood buffets… this is a package deal with a difference though, made especially for you to save money on your bridal jewellery and your bridesmaids’ jewellery too!

A lot of brides like a matching set of necklace, bracelet and earrings, with the bridesmaids wearing smaller, daintier versions of the bride’s jewellery and this is where the packages from Bridal Designs Wedding Jewellery come into their own.

You can buy matching sets of all the best selling designs including the Adore and Allure at a lower price than it would be buying the items separately, plus if you buy more than one set (perhaps as gifts for your bridesmaids) you save an extra 10% too!

Recently H&M caused a bit of a stir when they launched their £59.99 wedding dress – a 1930s Hollywood inspired dress promising a “glamorous movie star look.” Wedding blogs and magazines were all over it, the discussion on facebook and twitter was fascinating. My own thoughts over on facebook – yes, I’d wear a £59.99 dress for my wedding! (But probably not that one… I’d choose something a little more individual, with a little less press coverage!) If price is more of an issue then I have another question for you: would you buy your entire wedding outfit for under £550? Tracey from Bridal Designs has written a blog post with some suggestions and I’d love to hear what you think!

Tracey has been telling me all about her business – one of those wonderful little craft businesses where you can work with the designer herself to create something really special. She told me, ‘The most important thing to me is the fantastic service we give brides to be – this is one of the biggest days of their lives and everything needs to be right.
