calligraphy table number sign for Askham Hall from By Moon and Tide

I’m writing this as I sit behind my little stand at Askham Hall on Sunday – where I’m an exhibit! (with my By Moon & Tide Calligraphy hat on.) This is the one ‘local’ venue I’ve been desperate to explore for years, and never quite made it until today… and it’s beautiful.

I’m here with all of my calligraphy, signage and stationery goodies, all set up for the day. The vibe is magical, the venue is bursting with relaxed and pretty barn wedding charm, and the other exhibitors (‘exhibit’ is just how I feel!) are super lovely humans who’ve made me feel at home.

Here’s a little peek at the wedding invitations and other handwritten / calligraphy-inspired treats on my stand – and the showstopper backdrop I’m so proud of on that stunning copper frame from Tebbey & Co. Emma styled all the dining tables in the barn and main house, and they looked breathtaking – flowers from Sally at Roseberry (it’s Sally you can see in the photo above!) and my little bits of stationery and calligraphy completed the look.

Hello everyone! So have you ‘done’ a wedding fair yet this year? The season is nearly over but one of the biggies happens this weekend – Brides The Show hits Battersea Park this Saturday the 22nd of March and with well over 100 exhibitors it’s going to be busy, exciting and packed full of ideas. (Click here for your exclusive 25% ticket saving!)

Avoid wedding fair blindness! Make a plan before you go!

I’ve been on both ‘sides’ at wedding fairs: I’ve been to plenty as a visitor, a blogger / reporter and an exhibitor. So I consider myself pretty well qualified to help you get the best of a wedding fair without being completely overwhelmed by the buzz of it all!

  1. Have a strategy – know why you’re going to the wedding show, plan to book or make appointments with key suppliers and escape before you get sore feet and too many leaflets and flyers!

Most Curious Wedding Fair 2014 (1)Oh now this is great news – wedding shows and fairs have a horrific reputation but there are a few exciting and creative events which challenge the wedding industry and stand out from the crowd. A Most Curious Wedding Fair is most certainly one of them – and following a year when some very high profile events were sadly cancelled, it’s fantastic to know that A Most Curious Wedding Fair will be back for 2014. All the details are below, and suppliers will be announced over the next month or two so watch out for those!

The UK’s coolest wedding event is back for Spring/Summer 14 – bigger, better and blazing the trail for style savvy brides and grooms and a brand new venue. On Friday 4th and Saturday 5th April 2014, A Most Curious Wedding Fair will be bringing their unique brand of wedding cool to Hackney Downs Studios, East London in the heart of the UK’s creative hub.

If, like me, you live in a rural area or outside of the major cities, you might find it difficult to make it to the big wedding fairs and catwalk shows. Local wedding fairs are a world apart from the big shows in London and the bridal catwalks around the country can be very different from each other, often depending on the organisers of the wedding fair. Today we have a front row seat from one of London’s busiest wedding shows at Bluewater – all images are by London wedding photographer Louise Bjorling.

Beautiful jewel necklines, lace, dreamy textures, soft layering and vintage inspired details can all be found in this year’s bridal fashion – next to styles that have a more fitted, ladylike Grace Kelly / Jackie Kennedy reminiscence to them. All kinds of hues are right for this season – rich and vibrant colours as well as more subdued shades.

It’s been about four years since I last exhibited at a wedding fair. I forgot how much fun they can be! I was at Muncaster Castle on the edge of the Lake District for their autumn wedding fair and loved every minute – meeting couples and their families, and chatting to other wedding suppliers was loads of fun. I’d do it all again in a flash!

Today is the first day I’ve ever wished (briefly!) I lived in Birmingham. It’s not that I don’t like my home by the sea on the edge of the Lake District… but there is a Big Exciting Thing happening in Birmingham on the 4th of November.

the wedding institute new wedding fairs (23)
Another treat directly from my inbox today… The Wedding Institute. This one’s for the ladies (loving the acronym the W.I. there!) – a project created by the lovely wedding stationer Vicky Trainor and photographer Becky Mitchell, both established national and regional businesses in the creative and wedding market.

Vicky’s email had me smiling from the start. “It’s grim up north”, she said. Looking out of my window this morning I have to agree… and yet the “do like to be beside the seaside” feel of the postcard Vicky sent to introduce The Wedding Institute makes me feel quite fond of my northern roots…

“In January this year an exciting photo shoot took place in an old manor house in the coastal town of Saltburn by the Sea. A shoot that was to bring together a wealth of creative suppliers who work in the wedding industry, all from the North East/North Yorkshire area, all designers and specialists with a passion for working in creative and interesting ways.

How do you feel when you attend a wedding fair? Excited? Determined? Inspired? Time to throw in “all warm and fuzzy inside“… because Yorkshire’s biggest wedding fair on the 30th of this month is all in aid of a wonderful women’s charity.

Benevolent Brides Yorkshire wedding fair

Benevolent Brides is at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate, one of the region’s premier wedding venues and worth checking out even before we add a list of great exhibitors for your wedding day. There are two reasons I’d love to attend this fair (sadly it’s too far for me): it’s in aid of a great charity, and the list of exhibitors is more impressive by far than your average wedding fair.

Charity wedding fair

100% of the money raised in this event will be sent directly to Professor Robert Winston’s charity Women for Women, an amazing charity that raises funds, awareness and provides training for research into the causes and treatments of conditions that affect women and their babies.
