Earlier this month we featured gorgeous couple Laura & Chris’s wedding from Shottle Hall, in Derbyshire. I fell in love with the wedding breakfast rooms and the grounds of the place as soon as I saw their images – and it’s taken me a few weeks to find out more to tell you about one of Derbyshire’s premier wedding venues. Images are all by lovely Jon Cripwell Photography.

Shottle Hall is a stately home near Belper, set in its own enchanting gardens and is available as an exclusive use wedding venue. It’s licensed for ceremonies so you can wake up, get married, celebrate and sleep all under one fabulous roof. What I love most about this place is it’s flexible: Laura told me Shottle Hall didn’t impose restrictions on catering, for example, so they served mini cupcakes instead of canapés before the wedding breakfast – which is awesome.

Today’s fabulously beautiful wedding is going to be a favourite for 2016 – I can see it now. The handcrafted touches are wonderful, and I am SO impressed with gorgeous bride Laura’s lettering and wedding signs! (I’m teaching a calligraphy workshop today and seeing people learn to write like this is one of my favourite things!)

Chris and Laura planned their wedding over 2 years: “Having such a long time to plan the wedding had its pros and cons. We had time to source amazing suppliers and spend hours swooning over gorgeous weddings. However, I did get slightly overwhelmed with the sheer volume of wonderful ideas out there.”

The flowers are another huge highlight of the day:I spent a long time searching the internet for a local florist that created wedding flowers that had a bohemian, unstructured feel to them. Helen from The Flower Mill completely saw my vision for the flowers. They just pulled everything together and were definitely the focal point we were looking for!”

No? Good. Because you’re about to read an article which flies in the face of everything you’ve ever been told about your wedding colours having to match. They don’t. In fact, the more variation you have in the colours of your wedding styling, the better!

Back when I started out in the wedding business – and that makes me sound reeeally old, but it was less than 10 years ago – everything had to match. If a wedding was purple, it had to be Cadbury. Or royal. Or lavender. You’d never dream of using two slightly different purples – or at least, you’d never see such a travesty in the wedding magazines.

We used to joke on a wedding forum about the best man’s socks matching the bridesmaid’s knickers… and while I’ve never known of a wedding going quite that far, colour matching was a real worry for some brides.

I stumbled across these gorgeous images of Ali and Terry’s engagement shoot at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham and couldn’t resist showing you – such a stunning couple and the photographs are fabulous! They’re ballroom dancers and I love how graceful and fun their images are – it’s also a wonderful showcase of engagement shoots and will, I hope, encourage you to book one of your own!

Nottingham wedding photography (1)Jon is a great advocate of engagement shoots for four reasons: to help get to know your photographer, to be at ease with the camera, to get some lovely (non-wedding) portraits and so your photographer will learn which image styles you like best. (Read more here)

I totally agree with him: engagement shoots are such a brilliant idea, and I have another reason too: they allow you a little special couple time together in all the frenzy of wedding planning. What better excuse to have a day where you can enjoy each other’s company and have a bit of fun?! Ali and Terry did it with such style, I think they’re amazing…

Beautiful bride Jess photographed at Ringwood Hall, Derbyshire by Jon Cripwell Photography

If you were around on Thursday you’ll have seen Tom and Jess’s beautiful wedding at Ringwood Hall in Derbyshire. It looked like such a beautiful day – and with every detail and moment captured perfectly by Jon, they’ll have such a wonderful album full of memories to look back on. I invited Jon to become a sponsor of the English Wedding Blog after seeing his inages on his own wedding photography blog.

Tom and Jess’s wedding is beautiful, with mismatched pastel colours for the bouquets and bridesmaids… the details are gorgeous; the bride absolutely stunning. Jess and Tom make the loveliest couple: today’s bride wears a delicate lace dress while her groom is in navy blue – a nice touch for a pretty, elegant, and fun wedding.

The venue is Chesterfield’s Ringwood Hall, and all images are by the lovely Jon Cripwell Photography. Jon describes Tom and Jess as “an absolutely fantastic match for each other“, and says, “The ceremony was beautiful, and obviously emotional for everyone involved, but especially the bride! Jess valiantly made it through her vows, and it was touching to see Tom reassuring her and helping her through when the happy tears began to fall.
