It’s December, time for festive cheer! So, it probably feels a little strange that today I’m bringing you a piece titled ‘wedding day regrets’ but bear with me, I promise it will be worth it!

Nothing saddens me more than listening to the words “if I could do it all again I wish I would have…” and, if you are a 2018 bride to be heading into the year of your wedding, you have the wonderful luxury of time and the fabulous opportunity that comes with it to avoid those wedding day regrets I hear about too often.

It seems like it’s fairly common knowledge that wedding dresses “run small” compared to high street shops.

If shopping for the most important dress of your life wasn’t stressful enough, a lot of brides are then also faced with the horror of being squeezed into too small samples, pinned at the back with your bra showing, and having to show your bridesmaids and Mum while trying to imagine what it’ll look like in the right size.

As a dress designer, I wanted to explain why this is so common, and what you can do to avoid getting overwhelmed by it.

Sizes are just numbers

First of all- it’s important to remember that sizes are just numbers. They help the industry codify bodies, which come in all shapes and sizes and heights and proportions, into roughly 6 standard sizes. The system is imperfect, not least because it appeals to the side of our brain that wants to put things in boxes and say “okay so if I’m a size X I must look like Y“, or worse “I can only be happy if I’m a size X” This brings about what is often referred to as “vanity sizing”, where high street shops make their sizes fit a slightly bigger body in order to make them feel good and therefore buy the product.

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all staying safe and warm through this ridiculously cold spell! We have no snow here on the Cumbrian coast – in fact it’s been lovely and sunny since Friday – but omg is it cold on the beach! We’re looking back on an amazing year of real weddings, editorial photoshoots and glorious prettiness on the English Wedding Blog. We’ve shared features with so many amazing suppliers, I wanted to introduce you to some of our favourites today – and where better to begin than with the folks who turn dreams into reality? It takes a huge amount of talent and skill to be a wedding stylist and planner: these guys have an eye for beautiful design and a head for figures, logistics and calm reassurance. I take my hat off to every single one of these wonderful ladies – and I would recommend them to any couple looking for a little extra help with any aspect of wedding planning.

Fabulous art deco wedding inspo for 2017 with Lemontree Photography (12)

Before today I never realised art deco had such exciting and rebellious origins! If you’re having an art deco inspired wedding – or marrying in a venue with an art deco look, you should read this and embrace the spirit of the times – let your hair down and have twice as much fun! Huge thanks to Tina from Crimble Hall for the fabulous inspiration in today’s guest article!

Fun and glamorous Art Deco themes are in perfect keeping with the history and grandeur of many of England’s older former stately home and manor house venues. The ‘bright young things’ from these wealthy families had their entertaining heydays in the 1920’s, so whether you’re using a lavish former ballroom with crystal chandeliers and luscious shimmering fabrics, or a former cocktail bar with geometric wooden inlays, mirrored surfaces and polished chrome, you’ve got the perfect excuse for fun and decadent Art Deco wedding styling.

Jetsetting bridal brand Otaduy is one of our favourites here at the English Wedding Blog HQ. Their dresses are floaty light, pretty and simple – and their styled shoots remind us all that brides don’t have to look like princesses. I love their look: it’s sassy, a little alternative and always gorgeously streetwise.

For the last month or so I have been having secret little conversations with the English Wedding Blog sponsors and friends I’ve worked with this year. We’re working on something I’m really excited about, and it’s time to tell you all what we have planned for the New Year! If you’re a wedding supplier, there is still time to get involved.

After seven consecutive years as a top ten UK wedding blog, the English Wedding Blog is launching a brand new digital magazine in January 2018.

The English Wedding Bible will balance beautiful inspiration with down-to-earth advice from wedding industry insiders and experts, and showcase some of our favourite real weddings. I’m still looking for one more real weddings to knock my socks off, so do get in touch if you’d like to feature yours in the magazine! I also have one slot left for a styled shoot to include. Photographers & stylists – give me a shout if you have something beautiful to show our brides and grooms!

I know so many of you will be making plans to include your little ones in your day, and we’ve seen so many lovely ideas for children at weddings over the last months on the blog. Today I have a visual treat for you: beautiful imagery from London wedding photographer Eva Tarnok, with the sweetest mother & daughter enjoying the vibrant colours of lavender fields in the evening sunshine.

A tip for all of you mums and dads out there: gather up your little ones on your wedding day, whisk them off for a special few moments to enjoy being a family together. You’ll have images to treasure for all of your lifetimes, I promise.

Every 6 weeks or so I go on a little road trip with my pens and inks, and spend a couple of hours with lovely brides-to-be and their best girls. My calligraphy workshops get me away from my desk and into the real world – and they’ve become the absolute highlight of my year! Last year I made gift vouchers for Christmas – this year I’ve had them gorgeously copper foiled and they’re the prettiest little things 🙂

If you’d like to treat someone you know to a calligraphy workshop in 2018, you can get your hands on one of our pretty vouchers now. I’ll post one out to you in a couple of days – and you have a choice of dates to book your workshop.

All of my modern calligraphy classes are held in Manchester, at the heart of the Northern Quarter, and close to the station. I love teaching small groups so we do tend to fill up quickly! The class is a relaxing, enjoyable day where everyone gets personal attention and help with their calligraphy pens… and everyone will leave with a new skill, excited to practice more at home!

As you can see from the images today’s elegant outdoor wedding was super chilled and pretty! Gorgeous bride Hannah designed all of the wedding details as she is a graphic designer. Hannah & Sami’s Mum Ann made the incredible golden drip wedding cake covered in macarons together!

Hannah & Sami celebrated their wedding and reception at Rowhill Grange in Kent, they had an absolutely incredible outdoor ceremony followed by drinks and canapés on the lawn & reception in the stunningly decorated reception room in the clock tower. Hannah’s classic and stunning wedding gown is from Hayley Elizabeth Bridal in Orpington. Her bridesmaids wear dresses from Jarlo London. Sami and the groomsmen wore suits by Richard Mark Menswear.

Chic Weddings supplied our flowers and decorations. They were amazing the whole way through from initial consultation to final arrangements on the day. Lots of our decorations got moved around and utilized again where they could, our lavender and thyme pots even became the wedding favours! One of our favourite parts of the decor was the fairy lights that sat behind our top round table, setting the scene for the dinner and lit the dance floor!

As specialists in designing and producing marquee weddings, working in a variety of structures from Sperry Tents to Clearspan Marquees and everything in between, lovely Michelle from Pocketful of Dreams (more info at the end of the post!) has plenty of expert advice to share on styling a wedding marquee for maximum impact.

Image: Lucas & Co

If you want to create a wedding that is truly personal to you then a marquee allows you to do just that. You get the chance to build your wedding space from the ground up and have full control over the look and feel, as well as your choice of suppliers which will all impact on the experience your guests will have.  Typical wedding venues often have their own distinctive aesthetic, whereas a marquee is a true blank canvas. You literally have layers and layers of white canvas to play with and to style to your liking. Which is both an incredibly exciting opportunity and a daunting one to boot“.

Beautiful autumn wedding in Devon with Martin Dabek Photography (14)

Victoria and Lawrence used the loveliest autumnal touches to decorate their beautiful medieval venue Dartington Hall. It’s the largest medieval house in the West of England and possibly one of the most romantic wedding venues in the South West. They chose to marry in November because they love the cosy touches they could incorporate into their day: log fires and autumnal colours with rustic touches: lots of dried leaves, pine cones, ivy, burnt oranges, candles… and it looks wonderful!

“Martin photographed our wedding at Dartington Hall in November. He was fantastic! Relaxed yet professional on the day, listened to all of our weird and wonderful ideas beforehand and dealt with the November weather expertly! We were really happy with the end result and ended up ordering an album double the size of the one we had previously planned as we loved the pictures so much! Thanks again Martin.”
