Reportage and documentary wedding photography - traditions and tips! Martin Beddall Photography (31)

In 2019, there’s no need to stand still and say ‘cheese’. Have you ever wondered why the registrar will invite your guests up to take a pic of you “signing the register”, or why cutting the cake is such a big deal at weddings? It’s all about the photography, and dates back a generation to the times when wedding photographers had to very carefully capture 12 or 36 images on a film. You could almost count the ‘key moments’ to fit the photos on a roll of old school negatives! Documentary wedding photographer Martin Beddall explains how wedding photography has changed since our parents’ days, and how those traditional moments have become something really quite special in the age of documentary wedding photography.

Weddings have their traditions. Some are even actually old, like the wedding ring or the bouquet. Wedding photography has its traditions too. Or it used to…

In 2019 it really doesn’t need them!

The ‘traditions’ attached to wedding photography date back to an era when the camera technology meant that pictures needed to be ‘set up’ and flashed. “1..2..3, look this way…and smile!

Refined elegance is a thing we do oh so well in this country – and today’s couple Charlotte and Nick chose to keep their day perfectly elegant with pristine details and the prettiest styling. Pale blues and white florals make this a really beautiful day, with the cake and bouquet both being showstoppers I think you will LOVE!

Chicheley Hall wedding by Nicola Norton Photography (4)

Beautiful bride Charlotte wears a stunning traditional dress with embroidered bodice and layers upon layers of tulle for a fabulous skirt full of movement – while her gorgeous groom Nick looks the part in a traditional morning suit with a pale blue tie and white wedding waistcoat.

Charlotte and Nick chose our lovely friend and English Wedding member Nicola Norton Photography to capture their day. Nicola is a Hertfordshire wedding photographer who covers the surrounding counties, including magnificent Chicheley Hall where the wedding reception took place. Before heading to the hall, the happy couple paid a quick visit to Charlotte’s horses to say hi – and get some adorable photos of their little family! [more on Nicola’s blog here!]

Gorgeous couple Rhalina and Toby describe their wedding – and I LOVE this – as “a mix of tradition and latino energy with Art Deco club glamour”. It just about sums up the vibrance and energy of their day – and yet you need to scroll through all the images to capture the excitement and magic of it all! They were married in Mayfair in August, with a ceremony at Farm Street Church and their reception at The Landsdowne Club on Fitzmaurice Place.

Rhalina’s dress is incredible: it’s by Riki Dalal, and was the very last she tried on in the boutique. Isn’t it stunning? The delicate flowers on the bodice are lovely; the leaf pattern and graceful shape of the skirt made her absolutely mesmerising as she walked down the aisle on the day! This is a wow dress – and a wow wedding for sure!

Hey lovely! I’ve been blown away by the stunning wildflowers and relaxed, boho styling of Chris and Bex’s Devon wedding today. Once again we’re at the fabulous Colehayes Park in Bovey Tracey with their recommended photographer Warren from Howell Jones Photography. You’re going to adore all the floral prettiness – and this is an extra special day because the sunshine played out all day so even the meal was served in the gardens!

Bex and Chris chose a hot and sunny May day to get married – remember the crazy hot summer we had last year? This is pretty much where it all began! Beautiful bride Bex wears a divine boho wedding dress, light and floaty for the summer sunshine. The softly sparkling beaded belt and delicate lace cap sleeves are simply wonderful. Chris looks so handsome in a tailored grey suit with purple tie and pocket square. Sophisticated sunnies complete the outdoor groom look!

I love this so much – gorgeous couple Michelle and Dan were married at Tunnels Beaches and their beautiful day just sings of summer! The styling touches are perfect – there are wonderful summer wildflowers, as well as ice creams, proper old school striped deckchairs and a showstopper of a wedding cake! My brilliantly talented friend and Dorset wedding photographer Robin Goodlad captured the whole day for the happy couple, who have given him a fantastic review below! Enjoy the blog today… I know I will!

Absolutely! Robin was so lovely and he made two people who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera relax.

Some days it’s just all about the dress. Jenny Packham‘s breathtaking bridal wear has had my heart for a decade: sparkling and swishing their way through the years, Jenny’s gowns are inimitable, elegant and glamorous.

A Tale of Three Cities is the name for Jenny Packham’s 2020 wedding collection. The gowns capture the spirit of some of the world’s most romantic destinations: Paris, Buenos Aires and New York. With such diverse influences and an international outlook, Jenny Packham never fails to excite with her bridal launches, and I truly believe once you’ve tried on one of her gowns you’ll fall in love.

‘La Ville-Lumière’, the city of light and love, Paris is renowned for its fin-de-siècle grace and its haute couture heritage. Inspired by this sentiment, draped chiffon, finely pleated tulle, delicately embroidered organza and volumous skirts are softly romantic for an ethereal bride.

Vibrant, passionate and beautiful, Buenos Aires is synonymous with a Latino love of carnival and dance. In homage to the sensuality and soul of the city, these silhouettes celebrate the female form with bias cut crepes, intricate embellishment, fishtail skirts and plunging necklines.

Emma & Matt’s wedding was a beautiful and elegant one held at the Georgian House, Shilstone. The look is elegant and graceful, with pretty pink and white florals. I love the subtle autumnal twist to the flowers – they’re full of texture and look wonderfully natural with a mix of gorgeous greenery, blousy blooms and delicate smaller flowerheads.

Emma’s stunning dress is tightly fitted with a beautiful lace design and a flowing veil – she looks amazing! The pics of Emma & Matt sharing some quieter moments around Shilstone House are romantic and beautiful – and there are tons of styling ideas in here for you to gather and get inspired by!

How many wedding blogs make you laugh out loud?

What do you want from your wedding album – a beautifully styled and presented coffee table book? …

…Or a feast of memories of you with your friends and family, laughing, smiling and doing all the wonderful and crazy things you love them for?

Perhaps a bit of both.

The wedding industry is guilty, to an extent, of portraying weddings as perfectly unattainable dream days. We share swoon-worthy images of styling and design, fashion and beauty, with couples primped and pampered to perfection – more like a vision of heaven than real life – and there’s a danger we’ll lose focus and forget what weddings are all about.

Because don’t you think a wedding is a day to just love to bits? To fill and overwhelm your world view with happiness and companionship and a rollercoaster ride of emotion so bright you’ll remember it forever?

I do.

Summer brides and grooms – peony season is here and we’re celebrating with ALL the peonies in today’s beautiful Kent wedding. Beautiful bride Becky married her gorgeous husband Greg at High Rocks and they chose English Wedding member Helen England Photography to capture their day. The pics are glorious, the sunshine is fabulous! (Hello, outside! We LOVE you today!) – and the joy and happiness just radiates out from this pretty, feminine summer wedding.

There were a few recommendations for High Rocks wedding photographers. We looked at a lot and we absolutely loved Helen’s style. We wanted our wedding to be captured exactly how it was – everyone smiling and having fun. We loved that Helen’s photos are really relaxed and just capture everyone’s emotions without them knowing.

HELEN IS A DREAM!!! From the minute she showed up to my hotel room (which was chaos) she fitted in like one of our friends. She got on with her shooting and we didn’t even know she was there. She made me feel so comfortable.

Cool and quirky Somerset wedding with Emily Black Photography (31)

Today I wanted to share something cosy, beautiful and romantic – one of our last winter weddings of the blog season, I imagine – and one of the loveliest for sure. My fabulously talented friend Emily Black Photography captured this beauty at Maunsel House in Somerset. The stunning bride and groom are Rosie and Craig, whose day was full of fun, laughter and happiness as they celebrated with family and friends.

I love Maunsel House for its fascinating quirky character – this is one of Somerset’s favourite wedding venues and one of mine – I’m fairly sure it’s one of Emily’s as well! The doves make for an epic wedding photo, and there are peacocks and chickens wandering around as well. Inside, the house is full of romantic charm with unique decor and paintings on the wall, as well as incredible bedrooms for your guests to stay in too.

The world’s most popular music streaming service, Spotify, now boasts over 35 million songs, while the number available for download from the iTunes Store has been rumoured at over 40 million – which sounds like a lot to us! With so much choice when it comes to music, one question repeatedly burns in our minds – why do we keep hearing the same songs at weddings?

Okay, the obvious answer is that they’re really great. There’s no question there! But polls from the last 10 years have shown that many of the old favourites are at last becoming endangered by more recent endeavours in pop, rock and hip hop. We’ll be sad to see some of the classics go – there’ll always be a spot in our hearts for anything by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles – but some won’t be as fondly missed. Y.M.C.A. springs to mind for us… and we’re sure you can name a few of your own!

Happy Sunday my lovelies! We have the most beautiful wedding inspiration for you today, courtesy of The Hampshire Wedding Club member Lauren Hughes. As a Hampshire wedding photographer, Lauren’s imagination and creativity is second only to the beauty of her images – and for today’s feature she pulled together a super talented team who created something truly unique and different – and wonderfully exciting!

The wedding venue is Rownhams House, and if you’re planning a wedding in Hampshire you will be thrilled with all the clever and lovely humans you’re about to discover in that neck of the woods! For Hampshire wedding photography of course you need look no further: Lauren Hughes is your girl.

I love the non-traditional look to this shoot: the vibe is ethereal with a wistful essence and dark undertones. Liv’s dress by Nortier Shallow is layered with a gorgeous nude underskirt and soft black tulle edged in horsehair braid. The shape is high fashion elegance, incorporating the black layers without even a hint of steampunk and gothic: this would make a perfect evening dress for those of you who fancy a change halfway through your day; or a fabulous combination of classic silhouette and head-turning colour for a stunning daytime wedding look!
