A guest article from Weddings By Mary

Weddings give couples the perfect opportunity to express their unique & individual personalities. Adding personal touches to your day makes it so much more unique and memorable. At Weddings By Mary I completely understand that every wedding is unique and although I offer wedding planning ‘packages’, no wedding I plan is the same as another, as none of my couples are the same. I really encourage brides & grooms to express themselves in whatever way makes them feel like, well, them!

Over the years I have seen so many individual and personal ideas come to fruition, from the homemade touches of Scottish shortbread, lovingly baked and wrapped by the bride, to parents who tenderly nurtured and grew all the flowers in their own garden from which they created beautiful table centrepieces and displays around the wedding venue. Don’t be shy in expressing your wedding day desires. It is also a lovely way to get family and friends more involved in the planning, build up and excitement of your special day.

A guest article by English Wedding Directory members Last Minute Musicians

At Last Minute Musicians, we asked ourselves a question – what are the most popular cover songs being played by the wedding bands on our directory? As such, we recently carried out a survey of over 2500 bands to find out what was on their wedding set list.

We came up with a list of 60 of the most popular Rock/Pop hits, and 40 of the most popular Jazz and Classical pieces and it’s from this list that we’ve picked out twenty favourite cover songs other brides and grooms have requested, to help you with the process of selecting music for your big day!

  1. A Thousand Years – Christina Perri
  2. Rolling In The Deep – Adele
  3. At Last – Etta James
  4. Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran
  5. Aint Nobody – Chaka Khan
  6. American Boy by Estelle
  7. Dancing In The Street by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
  8. Good Times – Chic
  9. I Feel Good – James Brown

You don’t need to spend a fortune to have the perfect wedding: I honestly think the less you spend, the more personal and intimate your wedding will be – and the memories you’ll treasure for years to come will be stronger and all the more magical for it. Vikki and Sam were lucky to have wonderful friends and family who helped style their day. They were also exceptionally lucky with the weather, and set up tables outside their marquee for their wedding reception. The day looks amazing – the bride and groom are gorgeous, and I love everything about it. I hope you do too!

We had a pretty tight budget for our wedding, with most of the money being spent on the registry office, photography and my dress! I was absolutely blown away by how much time people were willing to give to help us out. It helped us keep the costs low and made the day so much more personal.

Fashion is a big thing in weddings – dresses change from year to year (and with huge influences whenever there’s a royal wedding!) – as do suits (we’ve recently shifted from bright blues to softer shades and a focus on luxury fabrics. But cars?

You wouldn’t expect it, but wedding car trends are huge. When the English Wedding Blog was born it was all about the stately old English cars – the Jaguars, Rolls Royce and Bentleys – big old granddaddies of cars full of luxury and upper class upholstery – to go with the traditional mansion wedding venues, obviously.

Now we’re getting married in urban spaces and converted barns, and in festival style tipi celebrations. And our wedding car choices have shifted, subtly and brilliantly, to fit.

English Wedding Directory member BookAclassic has been looking closely at its wedding bookings across the UK and has found that couples now favour the Ford Mustang over more traditional transport choices.

ethical diamond engagement rings by MiaDonna London

A guest article by Anna-Mieke Anderson

Anna-Mieke Anderson, a mother and consumer turned philanthropist and entrepreneur, is the CEO and founder of MiaDonna. In 2006, Anna-Mieke had the vision to create a conflict-free diamond and has led the evolution of the lab-grown diamond industry. Even before the technology to create diamonds was perfected she knew that the only way to combat conflict diamonds was to grow them in a modern day lab environment.

The MiaDonna story started in 2005 when a 7-year-old boy named Ponpon living in an African diamond mining community told me, “I had a great summer because only one of my classmates was killed.” Those words changed my life forever. While I was on bed rest during my pregnancy, I realised my diamond engagement ring that represented love most likely orphaned children. I took off my ring and began sponsoring Ponpon, who spoke those resounding words.

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend?

After something of a lazy weekend spent relaxing with family, I’m hitting the ground running with a stunning, knock your socks off kinda wedding today. The florals take centre stage – as they tend to, if you’re lucky enough to be able to celebrate your wedding in your own garden. Nick and Amanda did just that – they put all the flowers together for the tables, made their own invitations and wedding favours and even a balloon arch! Images are by our lovely friend and English Wedding Directory member Siobhan H Photography.

I love the relaxed feel of this wedding – the wooden tables and pretty styling go a long way – the trees dotted around the wedding breakfast tables look fabulous!

Amanda is beautiful in a simple lace dress with navy belt and shoes – an outfit perfect for dancing the night away! And Nick’s look fits perfectly with the relaxed vibe of their wedding day: his navy suit compliments Amanda’s style for the ceremony, and for the rest of the day he rocks a neutral waistcoat – these two lovely people just look so good together!

While so many couples are asking for donations to honeymoons or charities instead of wedding gifts, it can be tricky to find a special wedding gift they’ll treasure and remember you by. So when Daniel from Bestroke got in touch, I was fascinated and delighted to discover their beautiful concept. This is so much more than a unique wedding gift; English Wedding Directory member Bestroke works alongside master calligraphers in China who will create something incredibly special, just for you.

At Bestroke, we commission Chinese calligraphy artwork, each hand-painted and mounted on silk scrolls by our master artists in China.

Our Bespoke Wedding Gift Scroll is a made-to-order piece that features a traditional four character wedding blessing in Chinese.

There are ten beautiful proverbs to choose from, so guests can pick the blessing that they feel best suits the wedding partners. The blessings range from the romantic and succinct Chinese equivalent of ‘a match made in heaven’, to others that convey a more eastern philosophy, such as ‘as harmonious as fish in water’.

Earlier in the year I joined forces with the team at Lakes & Cumbria Wedding Magazine to launch their very first issue – and we had an absolute blast, creating a stunning cover shoot with ultraviolet stationery and florals. This year has passed by in a whirlwind, but I wanted to tell all of you beautiful people about the magazine before issue 2 comes out in the autumn!

It’s the first time I’ve worked hand in hand with magazine publishers, and the girls working on the magazine are such lovely, enthusiastic and happy people I enjoyed every second of the process!

The magazine cover shoot was also a fabulous chance for me to work with some of my favourites again – lovely Camilla Lucinda Photography was a star, beautifully capturing the gorgeous editorial I created with Katie from Made in Flowers, Julia Tasker Bridal Couture, Keseme at Le Petit Salon and Ashley from Greg Malloy Hairdressing – not forgetting our lovely hosts The Forest Side and our beautiful bride Jade Hodgson.

Happy Friday lovelies! It’s been a fabulous week here at English Wedding HQ and we’ve plenty of loveliness in store for the rest of the summer too. Have you signed up for our mailing list yet? You’ll be the first to read our new digital magazine if you do – it comes out in September and we’re so excited to share it with you.

Today’s real wedding is a beautiful combo of contemporary chic styling and traditional touches. Beautiful bride Lilyanna and gorgeous groom Chris were married in April at The Reid Rooms in Margaret Roding, Essex. Originally built nearly 200 years ago as stables for the working horses on Marks Hall Farm, the Reid Rooms is in such a lovely rural setting and has real charm about it – there’s even a moat, open fields and a pretty courtyard full of colourful flowers.

“We didn’t really have a theme, I wanted to keep it quite traditional with a spring feeling. We had a lot of lilac and lace. I wanted it to look pretty but not too much, I definitely feel like we achieved this as I would not change anything if I had the chance.
