Vibrant documentary wedding photography in Surrey by York Place Studios (25)

I do adore a properly placed apostrophe, don’t you?! Titles aside, today’s feature is fantastic advice, brilliantly written. No doubt there will be music involved in your wedding day at some point – so you should totally read this guest blog by our sponsors Bands for Hire and take note!

DO check out your wedding band’s sound before you book them.

These days, what with camera phones and YouTube, it’s easier than ever for a band to produce their own recordings and videos, so even if you can’t find any links when shopping online, you can always ask the band to send you something. Also, ask your friends and family if they can recommend a function band they’ve either seen or hired themselves recently.

DON’T go by recommendation alone.

It’s great when good reviews are passed on via word of mouth, but this is far too personal a matter to leave to chance. The band who played at your friends’ wedding may have a completely different sound and set list to what you have in mind. Hear them with you own ears, as it’s your wedding soundtrack they’ll be providing.

Sifting through wedding photographs is the loveliest job, it truly is! Something about Aimee and Ben’s day made me realise every one of the celebrations I see is special for something truly unique to the couple. For Aimee and Ben, the barn location and simple, relaxed styling makes everything look perfect – and the delight on their faces makes it a treat to look through their images from beginning to end.

Images are by lovely Camilla Lucinda Photography, who told me this wedding inspired her as a photographer so much because of just how much emotion and love filled the venue. “Ben and Aimee are the couple of every photographer’s dreams, so easy, laid back, relaxed and utterly besotted with each other – and I think this shines through the photographs, (well I hope it does!) And her bridesmaids are just stunning and naturals in front of the camera too – their dresses are BEAUTIFUL!”

If you’ve never submitted a wedding or shoot to a blog before, it can be a little scary – I’ve heard countless times from photographers that they’ve been putting off their first submission… and there’s really no need to wait! I LOVE hearing from photographers who’ve never featured on the blog before, and even if you’ve never been published on a wedding blog before I absolutely welcome your submissions. So do send them in!

Hi Claire!(*1)

I’m Sally, a wedding photographer in the Cotswolds(*2). I’ve been reading your blog(*3) over the summer and have a wedding to share with you which I think is a perfect fit! Jenny and Leo were married at Caswell House(*4) in May this year, (*5) and had a relaxed, foodie wedding with lots of lovely DIY details(*6) and special touches made by their friends and family. Jenny looked stunning in a Joanne Fleming(*7) gown and Leo’s tailored suit & sunglasses combo(*8) was fab – something I haven’t seen before at a wedding I’ve photographed! The flowers were the focal point of their day, by local florist Suzie B(*9) – I took so many bouquet photos!

Eclectic details for a homemade wedding near Bath, with Heather Birnie Photography (3)

The more I look at this gorgeous couple’s photos, the more I love everything about their day. It’s wonderfully casual, massively fun and full of the best homemade touches by talented friends and family. Tess and Ben got married near Bath and well and truly demonstrate what can be done for a wedding on a high street budget. Tess looks stunning in a bridal jumpsuit from Anthropologie and goes barefoot with anklets from India for the ceremony until putting on her white Nike Air Max 90s later in the day. Her hair and makeup was provided by Faye O’Connell.

Tess and Ben’s ceremony was non-religious and borrowed from Humanist and Pagan Land Blessings, and was held in a marquee in Ben’s parent’s back garden in Colerne. Signs painted by Sarah-Jane Griffey led guests to the wedding and their order of service was designed by Donna Sarah. The marquee, chairs and fairy lights were provided by Bath Marquee Company and dressed with bunting from the Event Flag Hire Company and flowers (as well as bouquets and button holes) by Electric Daisy Flower Farm. In the evening, local company Rye Bakery cooked wood fired pizza on site and served to guests.

Has anyone else noticed their inboxes are full of Christmas suggestions already?! And have you actually started Christmas shopping yet? I have to confess I’m a late bloomer this year… it’s going to be December before I start, I can see it now! (oops) But today I wanted to share something which will make a lovely gift for any 2018 brides and grooms – or your crafty friends!

Stunning Cheshire farm wedding ideas from Jess Yarwood Photography (14)

Today’s beautiful celebrations are properly at home on gorgeous bride Jodie and Ed’s family farm. Huge thanks to English Wedding Directory member Jess Yarwood Photography for her wonderful images – Jodie describes their wedding as “the most precious love-filled day of our lives” and I think her description fits it perfectly!

Stunning Cheshire farm wedding ideas from Jess Yarwood Photography (14)

Our wedding followed a rustic traditional theme styled around our farming lives. From the tractor which Ed drove us home from church on to horseshoes and little sheep on every table and straw bales scattered everywhere we made the theme about us and our lives. There were abundance of pink and white flowers, greenery, and cut logs inside and outside the marquee.

My advice for other couples? Enjoy the wedding planning – it really is a long process not to, and don’t get yourself worried or upset over things you can’t afford or couldn’t have. Your wedding will be the best day of your life no matter what, where and how it happens!

Pretty signage and a subtle Game of Thrones theme for Rosie and Allan's Canterbury wedding. Lucie Watson Photography (31)

Today’s gorgeous and relaxed family wedding took place at the end of August in the countryside of Canterbury. The church was a 5 minute walk from Rosie’s family home where she held the reception. I love how they’ve incorporated Game of Thrones into their day with subtle little details – and it all looks fabulous!

My Dad made the table plan, order of the day and chopped all the wood from a tree in the garden for the centre pieces. My Mum and brother made all the origami name places. We had a naked cake as this worked well with the theme of the day. My very talented Mum made it and it was amazing! Allan and I made all the signage.

It was a real family effort, we all enjoyed it and it made it personal.

2018 could turn out to be a very exciting year of weddings. Suppliers are whispering about a change in the air… I’ve heard it from more than one of my industry friends in recent months.

It’s not that we don’t love femininity and romantic palettes. We like pink – to be fair, pink has gone through its own little revolution over the years since the English Wedding Blog was born. It used to be just pink, then went from dusky to dusty, fuchsia to palest and barely-there, with a brush of neon along the way.

Colours change. Styles and trends change – vintage was huge but is tailing off for all but the most dedicated of designers and stylists.

2017 was the year of the fine art wedding: that light and airy look, with the softest summer skies and pale hues in every wedding shoot. But it seems there’s a change on the way.

The perfect intimate wedding in Hampshire with Lemontree Photography (7)

Today on the English Wedding Blog we’re all about family owned country houses: those dreamy estates where you can dine in luxury but with more of a relaxed atmosphere and generally more control over your day than you would in a ‘venue’ whose only purpose is to cater for weddings and events. Lovely Danielle from Penton Park has some great questions you should ask if you’re considering hiring someone’s luxury home for your wedding.

I love the idea of being welcomed into a magnificent home for your wedding – instantly you feel more relaxed and less constrained by rules and things you ‘should’ be doing a certain way!

Many years ago the country house was a private family home, a grand space created for the owner to host, entertain and generally enjoy the wealth the family had accumulated – fast forward to the 21st century and they are a mixed bag of private residences, wedding venues and hotels.

Social media has become such a huge part of the wedding experience. It seems as though almost every aspect of our daily lives now revolves around consuming and sharing online. Whether it’s what you’re eating, your opinion on current events or just something you find hilarious, us daily users of social media are constantly posting about what we’re up to.

There are mixed opinions on whether social media should be embraced, or shunned on a wedding day. Some couples opt to enforce their guests to completely ‘unplug’ for the day. This helps keep the wedding intimate in case couples have any fears about their guests being disengaged on the day.
