Here’s a little idea. While writing yesterday’s post about the state of the wedding industry, spiralling out-of-control wedding budgets and how we can fix what’s gone wrong, I paused for a moment, gazed through my rose-tinted specs and came up with The Ethical Wedding Supplier Pledge.

Ethical wedding supplier pledge

Ethical wedding supplier pledge for brides

Businesses who sign up to this pledge are showing they care. It’s an indicator of trustworthiness to help you choose wedding suppliers who won’t rip you off or let you down.

Ethical wedding supplier pledge for businesses

Signing up to the pledge and adding the badge to your site shows potential customers you’ll do your best for them. It’s a quick and simple way to say: “You can trust us”. And it’s simple – it’ll take you a minute or two, no more.

I’d love to see wedding businesses in the UK sign up to this pledge – will you?

The average UK wedding budget has more than doubled in a decade. In 1999 (which doesn’t seem so long ago to me) we’d spend £9,400 on a wedding. Now it’s £23,000 – and yes, it’s ridiculous.

I can understand why: if all your friends are spending £20k and booking a mansion for the day, you don’t want to be the only one struggling to decorate the scout hut to the same standard. But there are more sinister reasons for the increase in wedding budgets, principally the influence of the wedding industry.

So whose fault is it that weddings are so expensive?

I have a list of culprits I’d like to introduce, and – sorry – you’re on it. If you’re reading this blog, it’s probably your fault, as well as mine! Here we go:

1. It’s wedding suppliers’ fault

This sketch from Man Stroke Woman says it all really – and it’s close to the truth!

English groom and best men at a French wedding by Matt Parry

English groom and best men at a French wedding by Matt Parry

Today I thought it would be nice to broaden our horizons over at English Wedding. Just a little hop over the channel, to see a fab wedding by Matt Parry who is a wedding photographer in London.

His little brother Chris was married in France in September and I couldn’t resist sharing the montage of photos in Matt’s slideshow of the wedding day. You can even spot Matt doing a stint on the guitar as beautiful bride Katie walks down the aisle. The music for this slideshow is by The Maccabees. Enjoy!

Matt always has me hooked with his wedding slideshows, not only for the photos but for the great musical accompaniment – it always shows Matt’s style and personality and I’d definitely book him for a London wedding if I was having one!

The beautiful bride

The beautiful bride

I’m struggling for words to describe Alex & Jess’s wedding, which was sent to me by favourite wedding photographer Lisa Dawn. Why? Well, every time I scan through the pictures all I can see is how beautiful Jess is.

Talk about an English rose: Jess could be the heroine from any English period drama, with her hair beautifully curled and pinned, exquisite make up and her beautiful classic wedding dress with just enough diamond sparkle to take your breath away.

How about I stop wittering and show you the photos of Alex and Jess’s wedding day?! Enjoy…

I’d like to extend a virtual hug to Adam from ARJ Photography this week. He’s helped me out no end as I sit sulking with my broken wrist – first with gorgeous images from Liz and Jon’s pre-wedding photoshoot, and now with a brilliant guest post.

So while my wrist gets better, it’s over to Adam with everything you need to know about pre-wedding or engagement photography sessions. Should you? Yes!!!

We don’t like having our photos taken, and we’re not photogenic.

It’s a strange thing to say to someone who you’re about to hand over a chunk of your wedding budget to, specifically so they’ll take photos of you for a whole day – and one of the most important, emotional and eventful days of your life at that.

But this is often one of the first things a couple will tell me when we meet to talk about me working with them for their wedding day.

I’ve taken far too long to get this latest mini interview on the blog – but I think it’s worth the wait!

Helen Carter London wedding planner website

Helen Carter is a wedding planner based in London, and I discovered her when I stumbled across her website a few months back. I’ve followed her on Twitter ever since, and she’s a lovely lady with an amazing and interesting job… so I hope you enjoy her mini interview.

What inspires you?

I like the simple things in life and I take a lot of inspiration from my family. They’ve always supported me in whatever I’ve wanted to do, and I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today without my husband in particular.

Having said that, I’m also quite an ambitious person and a terrible perfectionist, and consequently I’m always striving to be the best that I can be at whatever I do.

Setting such high standards and challenges does sometimes mean I end up disappointed, but when things come off I feel a great sense of achievement.

Engagement shoot

Engagement shoot

This is the first engagement shoot I’ve featured on English Wedding. I’ve been thinking about who’s out there reading the blog (hello, you!) and what you’d like to see… it kind of figures you’re probably engaged so I hope you’ll enjoy these.

I’ll share the lovely photos first: they’re from ARJ Photography, based in Manchester. The bride and groom to be are Liz and Jon, and their engagement (or pre-wedding) shoot was at Delamere Forest.

This is just a quick apology as I sit typing away rather more slowly than usual…. I have my arm in plaster and a little backlog of gorgeous weddings to get on the blog. I also have a little collection of almost-written articles about marketing a wedding business for all the wedding suppliers out there – just putting the finishing touches on those.

So – please bear with me as you may see smaller and less texty blog posts for a few days as my broken paw (kindly labelled by Andy Staggered) clomps about the keyboard over at English Wedding HQ!

Being in the wedding stationery business myself, I have certain idols who I really admire. Sugalily is one, the brainchild of super chic designer Abbey Warner, in whose honour I am now going to drop capital letters (our emails have taught me that’s how the cool folks do it).

do we like sugalily, do we?

do we like sugalily, do we? we love sugalily!

a handy little graphic from the sugalily blog!

i’ve admired abbey and sugalily for ages and finally got in touch a few weeks ago to ask if abbey would tell english wedding about her dream wedding. she did – and i loved her ideas. i’m sure jude and sienna will call!

but i couldn’t leave my admiration for sugalily at that.
