email from mother in law to bride june 2011 daily mail

The Telegraph and Daily Mail are today reporting on an email sent from a mother in law to her son’s bride. It’s not a nice story but one that gets me thinking and I’d love to hear your opinions on this one!

email from mother in law to bride june 2011 daily mail

Source: the Daily Mail (mother in law email to bride article)

Allegedly the mother in law emailed her son’s fiancée with a list of complaints about her behaviour saying:

  • she lacked good manners
  • she should attend finishing school
  • she’d be a great candidate for Ladette to Lady
  • she didn’t try hard enough to fit in with the family
  • hiring a castle for the wedding was ‘brash, celebrity style behaviour’
  • her parents should have saved more for their daughter’s wedding

The girl was shocked to receive the email and forwarded it to a couple of friends… and so the story began – it’s now being shared all over the world!

Another regional wedding magazine is Your [insert county here!] Wedding. County wedding magazines cover most of the country so this was a great title to include in the review representing regional wedding magazines. My local one is Your Manchester Wedding, but if you’re in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Bristol, Somerset, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Kent, London, South Wales, Surrey, Sussex or the West Midlands you can get this one where you live too.

Your Manchester Wedding Magazine: a review

Issue compared: February / March 2011
Cover price: £2.95

  • 103 pages
  • 8 pages of real weddings
  • 14 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 19 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 27 pages of product ideas
  • 35 pages of advertisements
  • 34% of the magazine pages are ads

This is a nicely balanced wedding magazine, with fewer pages than most but with as many articles and advice pages as most of the best national wedding magazines.

Poules en Paris!

Well we all came back from Paris on Sunday and I’m still a little tired today! (And a little hungover yesterday aswell to be honest, 2 day-ers are the worst) I’d just like to say first a massive thank you to all my lovely hens who made it a trip I’ll never forget, I really appreciate all the effort you all made to come and celebrate with me.

There were nine of us altogether, and one little baby bump belonging to Kelly, David’s brother’s fiance. 5 of us (moi, Louise, Kate, Elizabeth and Katie B) met in Newcastle first before our flight, we started in Vodka Revolution  for a cheap and lazy long lunch, before jumping in a taxi and heading to the airport to meet Kelly! I’d bought everyone berets as a little gift to say thanks for coming, but I can’t find any pictures of them in action!

Food and drink usually play a huge role in a wedding reception, particularly if the bride and groom are anything like me and Paul. However, not everyone wants to go down the traditional route of a three course meal and tiered cake. Below are some of the food and drink ideas we are incorporating into our wedding celebrations in September. It’s making my mouth water just thinking about them…

Hog Roast

We knew from Day 1 of being engaged that we wanted a hog roast at the wedding. Paul is a huge fan of his meat, and we didn’t really want a traditional sit down dinner as it’s just not very us. I tasked my long-suffering Mum with finding a good hog roast company, and she came up with Love Me Tender, who I believe can regularly be found serving food in Camden and on Battersea’s Northcote Road. Until recently, my whole family had sampled a Love Me Tender hog roast and declared it to be brilliant, but Paul and I had yet to give it a go. Then we unexpectedly came across the company at a London Zoo evening event, and we were smitten – believe me, that is some seriously good pork.

Hampton Court Palace wedding blog photography Pippa McKenzieIsn’t it incredible to think of the wonderful wedding celebrations we can create these days – from tipis to castles, marquees to manor houses and more.

As I sit to write this wedding blog post I’m more than a little overwhelmed by Ellie and Dean’s wedding venue: the former home of Henry VIII and a succession of kings and queens after him, architecture designed to rival Versailles, with 60 acres of beautiful gardens…

Back in King Henry’s day who’d have imagined a lovely couple like Ellie and Dean would be getting wed in his palace… but if you ask me it’s days like this that Hampton Court Palace was made for. You’re going to love this wedding blog feature.

Ellie’s wedding dress is Duyen by Cymbeline, which she bought from Miss Bush Bridal Wear in Ripley. I love the classic shape of the dress with all that beautiful lace… and it looks incredible on Ellie.

Wedding magazine definitely caught my attention with its feature on the top UK wedding bloggers, and has some of the most inspiring bridal shoots as well as being one of the best designed UK wedding magazines overall.

Wedding magazine: a review

Issue compared: June / July 2011
Cover price: £4.90

  • 260 pages
  • 15 pages of real weddings
  • 25 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 13 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 82 pages of product ideas
  • 125 pages of advertisements
  • 48% of the magazine pages are ads

wedding magazineI enjoyed reading ‘what every husband should know’ – an entertaining extract from a book with some laughs and nice advice too. The UK wedding bloggers article of course was brilliant – it’s great to see the wedding magazines really taking notice of wedding blogs (and while it’s not going to be my thing as I still have this gun pointed at my foot, the idea that we should all work together is a nice one)!

UK wedding magazine review Perfect Wedding

Perfect Wedding magazine

Perfect Wedding magazine came joint fourth place in my review of UK wedding mags. It’s one of the handbag sized magazines and despite me losing it twice I managed to finish my review!

Perfect Wedding magazine: a review

Issue compared: March 2011
Cover price: £2.99

  • 260 pages
  • 22 pages of real weddings
  • 21 pages of advice
  • 15 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 79 pages of product ideas
  • 123 pages of advertisements
  • 47% of the magazine pages are ads

UK wedding magazine review Perfect WeddingSomething that matters to me a lot (is it just me?) is page numbers. In magazines the contents list at the front is numbered, you read it, flick through and try and find the page you want… and Perfect Wedding keeps the numbers going so you can find stuff! It’s one of few wedding magazines with good page numbers. Boring maybe, but I got so frustrated with some of the others trying to find features inside, this was a refreshing change!

Days Married: 52

Time really does fly doesn’t it! I know I haven’t been around much but I’m still here lurking about – and today I bring you our wedding video, expertly crafted by Jeff Wood who is an absolute legend of ours. Seriously, if you want a classy, personal and unique wedding video – you want Jeff and his team. Words cannot express how thrilled we are with our video – and I think one of the most special things about it is that he recorded the jazz trio that were playing during the wedding breakfast and used that music as the basis for the soundtrack. He really took the time to know us and what our wedding was about and was able to incorporate everything (and more) into a gorgeous production.

I won’t say anything else because it really does speak for itself. Just enjoy! 🙂

Wedding Ideas is the best handy sized wedding magazine in the UK. Coming out joint second place in my comparison and review of all the UK wedding magazines, Wedding Ideas has an impressive count of real weddings, a healthy advertising ratio (relative to the other wedding magazines) and plenty of advice pages.

Wedding Ideas magazine: a review

Issue compared: June 2011
Cover price: £2.99

  • 338 pages
  • 43 pages of real weddings
  • 27 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 26 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 98 pages of product ideas
  • 144 pages of advertisements
  • 43% of the magazine pages are ads

Wedding Ideas did brilliantly in my review of UK wedding magazines. With way more than the average count of real wedding pages, advice and feature pages and one of the highest page counts, this is a mag which has plenty inside.

It’s also a very cleverly targeted wedding magazine and focuses on value for money – there are plenty of ideas for brides looking for affordable decorations and themes, and a useful article on 20 ways to stretch your wedding budget.

UK wedding magazine review on English Wedding blog

I hope you’ve been enjoying the summer sunshine today – this weeks’ little blog review is a little later than normal because it’s been such a lovely day! So – time for a quick recap on the last week and today I’m sharing some of the best little goodies I’ve bookmarked from around the web this week.

Last week on the English Wedding blog

  • Wedding magazines: introduction, the wedding magazine review, and a look at individual wedding magazines. These articles were written to help brides and grooms decide which wedding magazine is best for you, and to provide a useful resource for anyone – businesses included – with questions about the UK wedding press. To find out what this is all about, start here!
  • UK wedding magazine review on English Wedding blog
A few comments asked what the point of this review was, so I’ve tried to reiterate my reasons for writing about the wedding press: it’s not just to make up for previous bad behaviour(!) – I intended this as a useful reference and if there’s just one person out there who shares my geeky curiosity about wedding mags who enjoys reading these, then I’m happy!
UK Brides magazine cover
FEATURED

The biggest UK wedding magazine, Brides came joint second in my review and comparison of the best UK wedding magazines. With a whopping (love that word!) 394 pages it’s also one of the most expensive, but has some good content.

Brides magazine: a review

Issue compared: March / April 2011
Cover price: £4.99

  • 394 pages
  • 12 pages of real weddings
  • 24 pages of advice and feature articles
  • 13 other non-selling pages (contents etc)
  • 93 pages of product ideas
  • 252 pages of advertisements
  • 64% of the magazine pages are ads

UK Brides magazine coverBrides magazine has more pages than any other so there is plenty of varied content, and the magazine looks great and feels expensive.

The articles inside are very good, in depth and compelling to read. Advice where it’s given is comprehensive and genuinely useful – it goes further than many other wedding magazines.

A Vera Wang interview which ran across six full pages makes this a very memorable wedding magazine. The quality of the interview and feature was really high, and for this reason Brides stood out as one of the best UK wedding magazines.
