You and Your Wedding magazine
FEATURED

The results are in, the wedding magazines are back on the shelves, and I can now officially reveal the result of my UK wedding magazine review. Drum roll please….

The best UK wedding magazine

Properly objectively analysed, pages counted and compared with other top UK wedding mags… The best UK wedding magazine is You & Your Wedding. With the best quality content, valuable advice, inspirational and exciting shoots and comparing well for every criteria I considered – You & Your Wedding magazine is far and away the best UK wedding magazine for brides.

Joint second best UK wedding magazines are Brides and Wedding Ideas. Brides is a top quality magazine for design and with a great standard when it comes to articles and features. Wedding Ideas is the best magazine for more affordable weddings, with plenty of real weddings, advice and articles to inspire.

This is my objective review of the top UK wedding magazines. See how your favourite compares!

I’ve been poring over wedding magazines for you recently – up to my elbows in wedding dress ads and waking up in the mornings with the handbag-sized mags stuck to my face… terrible habit of reading last thing at night!

Why? Because I have too many preconceptions about wedding magazines and I really wanted to rediscover and reevaluate the wedding mags for myself. Are they really all the same? Are they all old fashioned? Well… no. I’m glad to say I was wrong on those counts.

So this is my very honest, practical, useful wedding magazine review.

uk wedding magazine review

I’ve compared UK wedding magazines so you – brides, grooms and wedding suppliers – can see how they stand against each other: which have most useful content, most ads, the best advice and the most interesting features.

Having spent a good few days on my little spreadsheet, I’m going to break this wedding magazine review into manageable chunks. This is roughly how it’ll pan out – feel free to bookmark this page and come back for the best bits as I post them and link back over the next few days.

Hey everyone and happy Sunday evening… hope you’re having a lovely laid-back day and those of you who can be with your dads I hope you’ve all had a nice time together. My dad’s all the way up in the Lake District so we had a chat this morning, but I wish I could have made the trip up there instead… if you’re near to your dad you’re so lucky.

Anyway… time for me to stop waffling and recap the week we’ve had on the English Wedding blog.

Sunday: Blogger Bride Fran showed us her sparkles and Kelly from Boho Weddings and Events inspired a post about how weddings can take over our lives! Meanwhile Loulabelle’s cute campervan Bertie revealed his makeover ready for the wedding day.

Monday: The Monday Makerie had lots of fabulous colourful ideas – if you’ve had a go at those paper flowers do let me know!

After my quandry about whether or not to have an engagement shoot, still somewhat undecided, we took the plunge and booked a session with the fabulous Matt Ethan (featured here on English-Wedding not so long ago). Matt’s photographs are everything I hope mine will be one day: effortless, beautiful, simple and reportage with a slight film-style twist.

Matt's recent shoot featured on English-Wedding

However, our finding Matt comes from quite a bittersweet story. I started researching further north to Newcastle to find a photographer who fit what we were looking for. I stumbled across a photographer (who will remain nameless), whose photographs I really liked. I emailed them with the idea for a comic book style photo shoot with blackboard complete with captions, as David and I used to draw comic figures for each other and leave them as backgrounds on each others laptops when the other wasn’t watching; and I also made David ‘The book of Sal ‘n’ Dav’, and wanted the shoot to echo story told in it.

Just a short post and yet again it’s on the subject of vases! I bought a pack of 12 vases which you can buy from Ikea, eBay, Wilkinsons etc, you’ll recognise the shape no doubt, and I mainly bought them for back up in case we needed a few extra for the wedding (little did I know I’d end up with as many as I did!) I refound them a week or so ago, and felt it a waste not to use them, and had been to a haberdashery shop that day buying a ton of lace in cream, coffee, pink and blue.

I thought I’d give customising them a go, not too bothered whether I liked the results (12 vases cost around £7), but I love them! I think they look so elegant, and fit more with the whole vintage look of a few of the other details I have planned.

If you were here yesterday you’ll remember Ruth and Dan’s wedding day in the schoolhouse at Smallwood Manor – and you may also remember I hinted at the gloriously colourful details and then didn’t show you any.

Ah… meanie! But here they are. Wedding photographer Katy Lunsford sent me so many beautiful photos I had to write two blog posts for Ruth and Dan’s wedding – so you get a whole dedicated ‘get the look’ feature today, all inspired by (and with photos from) Ruth and Dan’s day.

293 Days to Go

FEATURED
FEATURED

That’s the first time I’ve had to look up how many days it is to go! Usually I have the number etched on my brain.

Work has been manic this week so a lot of wedding things have been put on hold. Well, with 293 days to go, there’s not a lot that needs doing at the moment. Having two and a half years to plan our wedding does mean that we’re really spreading out the costs and nothing is being left to the last minute, but I do think it would be nice to have just a year to plan so there’s a constant stream of fun things to do and arriving in the post.

What I have done is fixed a date for the bridesmaids to try on their dresses and to be measured. I personally can’t choose between two dresses so I’m going to ask the bridesmaids to try their favourites. I like Alfred Angelo 7016 and 7076, but I can’t choose. They’re actually quite similar dresses in style and price so I’m happy whatever my bridesmaids decide.

When I need a bit of colour therapy mixed in with my wedding obsession, I know where to go: wedding photographer Katy Lunsford dishes out spectacularly colourful photographs in her very own inimitable style.

This is Ruth and Dan’s wedding, held in April at Staffordshire’s Smallwood Manor. The school is a gorgeous victorian building with its own chapel and set in fifty acres of parkland nestled in the Staffordshire countryside.

Ruth and Dan's real wedding vibrant colours (28)I absolutely adore how Ruth and Dan planned their wedding day – with lots of help from family and friends they created a stunning theme of beautiful colours to brighten up the spring day. The bridesmaids wore different coloured pashminas – an idea I love to bits! – and tables were fun and funky.

I’m sharing Ruth and Dan’s wedding story in two parts because there are so many stunning photos to enjoy. Today sit back and enjoy the wedding story in pictures. Tomorrow, get the look with close ups of all the gorgeous table decorations and details to inspire your own vibrant wedding day.

I’m back with another wedding story for all you lovers of documentary wedding photography out there – brought to you by English Wedding sponsor Martin Beddall. This wedding day at Clandon Park in Surrey is simply lovely: a beautiful bride and her handsome groom marrying in an early eighteenth century manor house in the Surrey countryside.

Who says a wedding day told in pictures isn’t as rich a story, as inspiring as all those gorgeous details we’re used to seeing on wedding blogs? Katy and Paul’s wedding day is full of its own little tales: Granny Mollie’s Fish Pie is an intriguing name from their wedding table plan. The venue they chose for their wedding has a fascinating history. There are smiles and laughter here, surprises and quiet moments, as the tale of their wedding day unfolds through your eyes and the lens of documentary wedding photographer Martin Beddall. Take a minute, scroll down a little and enjoy the journey:

Wedding photographer Pete Barnes describes this (gooooorgeous!) couple in his blog post as a fantastic, really great couple who are very obviously in love. Helen and Chris were married at Sandburn Hall near York, and these are some of my favourite photos from their wedding day.

Chris originally hails from New Zealand, so in case you were wondering he’s the Kiwi I mentioned in the title, and Helen – clearly – is the knock-out bombshell (both descriptions courtesy of Pete Barnes, lovely guy and great wedding photographer)!

Blackboard Signs

FEATURED
FEATURED

Just a short post about something I forgot to blog about earlier: my blackboard signs. These are so easy and cheap to make, but are such a nice touch and keepsake, or even to give away as a thank-you gift after the day.

Blackboard painting! (Probably not the best idea on the dining room table..)

The idea originated from my Dad (who owns a printing business), when he said “Oh I’ll do a sign for the bottom of the drive to show guests where the house is” as, basically, we live in the middle of nowhere. I thought it would be a nice touch to have a big gilt framed blackboard saying something along the lines of “Dav & Sal’s Wedding” or “Wedding This Way!”, and handily I had a spare gilt mirror lying around the house since we moved.

Like most of the wedding paraphernalia (vases I’m thinking of you), I got a little carried away. I ended up making smaller blackboards for the cake table (to say ‘Let them eat cake’), the guestbook, parking, the toilets, etc. They’re so cute though, and we’ll be using them for our couples shoot idea which I’ll be blogging about soon.
