Kensington Roof Gardens wedding blog (1)

Sometimes a blog post can be full to the brim with exciting things. Today, clearly by the title, there’s a lot to cover – and I love this wedding to bits. Wendy Bell is a designer so her wedding was bound to be creative; but every little thing from her glamorous dress to the venue and table decorations is really stunning – and right up my street.

Wendy is stunning (and James is a looker too!) – and I’m sure some of you English Wedding readers will feel inspired by their style… if you’re into looking gorgeous without being princessy, then this is the wedding blog for you.

So I’ve got a two parter for you this week again! First, Wendy and James’s wedding at Kensington Roof Gardens (how many of you guessed that was where the flamingoes came in?!) – with photography by Green Olive. Tomorrow I’ll share some of Wendy’s wedding invitation designs – and I promise, you’ll be impressed!

Here’s a lovely way to begin the week – by welcoming a new sponsor to the blog. Who remembers our French English Welsh wedding on the blog back in April? I loved Fiona’s creative photography – as well as the fact that she beats me hands down at languages, speaking hundreds* fluently.

*For a more accurate count, see Fiona’s English Wedding Showcase Page!

Fiona’s also a lovely lady – her emails make me smile; she genuinely cares about her clients and has a real passion for weddings and beautiful photography.

Mine is. There you go – let’s start a blog post with a confession! My wedding calligraphy business is going well, I love the work but… there’s something missing. Is anyone else out there looking for a bit of creative inspiration to inject into their work?

I’ve spent the day with two friends who inspire me – and I’m going to make my New Year’s Resolution now. I know it’s a bit early (but the pagan side of me says the first of December is surely something a bit new-yeary in the calendar). I’m determined to branch out a little.

So – wedding calligraphy is the most wonderful job in the world. It’s creative and pretty and I meet lovely people who appreciate my work. Lots of nice boxes ticked and a smile on my face, and theirs! I still feel I want more though.

How do you know when it’s time to get your business out of a creative rut?

  • you know you can do more, but just don’t seem to have the time

honeymoon ideas (1)

Because English Wedding blog focuses on weddings close to home, there isn’t much opportunity to venture to exotic locations or to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at fabulous destinations. However… as it’s so cold outside, and we’re all wrapped up in scarves and thermals this month, I thought it was time to talk honeymoons! This is a guest blog post – I hope you enjoy it.

For many couples postulating and pondering over where to go on their honeymoon can be a tricky task and more often than not the last thing on their minds is the perceived rough and tumble of an African safari. Indeed usually those first envisaged flashes of inspiration are embodied by three simple elements; a wide swathe of powder white sand, the warmth of an unbroken sun-filled sky and the gentle lapping waters of a gin-clear tropical ocean. Quite the picture postcard; and who am I to argue that this Robinson Crusoe-esque idyll isn’t the perfect way to celebrate a loving new union?

Another Friday afternoon, another mini-escape from the pressures of the day job for anyone who’s twiddling a pen, gazing into space or watching the clock in the corner. (Do offices still have clocks in the corner? It’s been so long… does everyone just use the clock in the corner of their screen now?) Anyways…

Welcome to the land of weddings, blogs and pretty things.

This is a guest post from a groom-to-be – Alex shares his personal advice about choosing your wedding party – and the pitfalls to avoid!

For most people, their wedding is one of the (if not the) most important day of their lives, and in most instances, even if you try to keep it a small affair there will be a number of different people involved, with their own roles to play and their own opinions to contribute (often regardless of whether you want them to).

Part of the job of organizing a wedding is selecting the wedding party – bridesmaids, best man, page boys etc… But anyone who has done it will well know that family politics at weddings can be a nightmare.

Budget / Attendants

Before we get started with choosing the wedding party, it is worth considering what the budget is and how big the wedding will be. Having 7 bridesmaids might be fine if you have 150 guests, but if your wedding is going to be a small affair you should probably limit yourself more.

Lauren and Pat’s Wedding Highlights from Love Gets Sweeter on Vimeo.

A little something special for today – 3:44 minutes of romance with Lauren* and Pat’s lovely wedding feature film from Love Gets Sweeter. I love blogging wedding films like this – it’s wonderful to sit back, turn my speakers up, grab a biscuit (just to hold) and smile, giggle and cry a bit along with the movie!

Highlights of this wedding film for me (and for you to watch out for):

  • Hubert the dog is so cuddleable
  • the boys cycling their way around London (a bit wibbly)
  • Lauren’s fabulous dress by Enzoani is amazing on her! Properly elaborate and beautiful – and on such a gorgeous bride it looks incredible. Watch for the swishing through the park…
  • Pat’s nerves during the ceremony – he’s so lovely and adorably overwhelmed by the wedding
  • * briefly known as Louise as Pat said her middle name first by accident, or so I understand from the Love Gets Sweeter blog post!

If you’ve started planning your hen party then you’re probably thinking first about who to invite. This is a very important part of your hen party, and it has the ability to make or break your hen party. Who you bring on your hen party can make it cool and fun – or it can make it lame and totally pathetic. Now we know we’ve got your full attention! Here’s our advice, on who to bring and who to leave off the invite list to your hen party:

Must Bring: The Best Friend. We probably don’t have to tell you to invite your best friend – but we thought we’d start with the fun stuff first. Inviting your best friend – and inviting her first is so important. Your best friend knows you so well that inviting her nearly guarantees you’ll have a great time. She knows what kind of discos you like, your favorite cocktail, your favorite fun activities and how to keep all of your deepest, darkest secrets!

One thing: I absolutely can’t possibly let this one get away without making an inspiration board, I thought. Nicola and Chris created a wedding that was true to their personalities, full of creativity and character.

I’ve blogged their vintage wedding in Derbyshire over the last two days. I didn’t want the blog features to end! So I’ve even kept some of Nicola’s wedding report back for you today.

“In the table setting, each person had one of the 130 vintage cup and saucers that I had been collecting over the last year from car boot sales, flea markets and a good proportion from a little man on Portobello rd market!

I then dotted around the old jars and bottles, containing plain bunches of sweet peas and babysbreath.

The central flower decoration on each table was in a vintage jug and was made up of ‘meadow type’ flowers. Place settings were made up of bunches of dried lavender with luggage tags with names on.

Charlotte Balbier engagement blog (15)

I’m way over the top excited about this little blog post. Fabulous bridal designer Charlotte Balbier has announced her engagement to the love of her life Teddy Bedford. Having lived a real life ‘Sliding Doors’, growing up around the corner from each other, Charlotte and Teddy are now going to be busy making plans – quite possibly for a gorgeous winter wedding day.

It’s always big news when someone so popular in the wedding industry gets engaged… there’s a real buzz around Charlotte and Teddy’s engagement and we can’t wait to find out more about their plans over the next few months. This is far more exciting for me than any celeb weddings that might have happened in 2011!

Charlotte Balbier is at the forefront of UK bridal design, with her latest ‘Candy Kisses’ collection a dream of vintage inspired French lace, rose pinks and contemporary styles, slinky red carpet glamour and timeless elegance. I love Charlotte’s designs to bits – and I’m delighted that Charlotte has shared a little exclusive proposal story with English Wedding blog!

Did you love Nicola and Chris’s wedding on the blog yesterday? I bet you did… although did I perhaps made you a bit angry when I left you partway through, with our gorgeous bride and groom on the way to their wedding reception?! Hee!

It’s ok – they’re back on English Wedding blog this morning with more fabulous pics from wedding photographer Andy Hook, and Nicola’s words are going to make you all tingly – quite possibly to bring a little tear to your eye too.

Enjoy.

Following the service, we did some pictures outside and on a nearby bridge, then headed towards home. We went for some pictures on the way with Andy the photographer, then arrived back to the guests in my dads open top classic car, which I sat up on the back of with a glass of bubbles in hand as we drove in! The party was in full swing, the bubbles and pimms were flowing and people were loving the games!

I did a secret little smile when this wedding came in – while it’s become trendy to talk about the end of vintage as a mass market phenomenon, for some couples the whole vintage theme fits like a glove – and Nicola and Chris do vintage their way, very very beautifully indeed.

Yorkshire wedding photographer Andy Hook submitted the pictures for English Wedding blog – thanks Andy! – and Nicola wrote a wedding report for me to share with you all. It’s one of the best wedding reports I’ve seen – let alone been able to feature on my blog!

Without further ado (as they said, I believe, in ye olde vintage eras…) here’s Nicola and Chris’s gorgeously creative…

Chris and I are very influenced by vintage 1930’s – 40’s style, in the furniture we buy, the clothes we wear and even in the new business that we are setting up (a prohibition style jazz bar in Chelsea). We really wanted to reflect this style in our day.
