When I met with Kent wedding photographer Benjamin Toms in February I don’t think he realised how many feature articles we’d talked through… but I left the little coffee shop so full of ideas and advice to share with you, this is already the fifth in our little series!

What makes a wedding unique? Relationships and magical moments. with Benjamin Toms (5)

It’s a funny thing how every couple can feel pressured into having a ‘unique’ wedding… and the wedding media encourages brides and grooms to discover original suppliers, to craft personal and quirky décor, and to buy, design or make unique things.

Cue a bit of a revelation when Ben explained his perspective on exactly what makes a wedding unique. The answer wasn’t what I expected at all.

Could documentary wedding photography be the secret?

Documentary wedding photography is, as you probably know, telling the story of a wedding through emotions and moments. It’s not a factual timeline of your wedding, but a visual memory of the moments which will really let you relive your day for years to come.

Jessica and Sean’s wedding is traditional with a modern vintage twist – combining pretty pastels and soft floral arrangements with a classic cake, venue and wedding dress brings together this quintessentially English wedding beautifully.

They were married at Priory Hall, Hadleigh, in August last year and I just couldn’t resist sharing this wonderfully sunny, deliriously happy day with you all this morning. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do!

Jessica told me it was important to take time out and appreciate everyone’s company on the day: “all of the people you love in the world are under one roof for this one day – and they’re all there for you two – make the most of your time with them and don’t let anything stress you out“.

I had the absolute pleasure in February of meeting Kent wedding photographer Benjamin Toms (and his impeccably behaved black labrador Byron!) – and we talked and talked. Ben’s approach to wedding photography is inspiring. I only wish you could have been there to listen to him talk about the work he loves – and to learn, along with me, some wedding photography secrets! I wanted to reintroduce you to Ben today. He’s been a supporter of the English Wedding Blog for a long time and I adore his work – his photography is simply out of this world, and his dedication is second to none.

Ben and I will be collaborating on a series of articles over the next few months, all around the subject of documentary wedding photography (and a gorgeous excuse for me to share some of Ben’s wedding photographs with you lovely lot!) – but first of all I’d like to reintroduce you to Ben and his work:

Ben’s website has had a complete redesign and is looking fantastic. He’s been busy revamping the entire site which has relaunched with a gorgeous slideshow featuring tantalising peeks at some of his best wedding images. Ben’s beautiful brides and great-looking grooms are only the tip of the iceberg: I’m smiling to see the brilliant toastmaster in full flow, the guests clearly having the time of their lives, and everyone from flower girls to puppies taking centre stage!

As much as I love a bit of quirky, a dash of creativity and all kinds of unusual weddings, I don’t think timeless elegance and style can be beaten. Laura and Pete’s Stratford-upon-Avon wedding at The Welcombe Hotel is the perfect example.

Laura’s orchid bouquet is exquisite; their wedding cake is impressive; the venue full of character and tradition. They married at The Holy Trinity Church before their Welcombe Hotel reception.

Images are by wedding photographer Benjamin Toms, who says, “It was a beautiful sunny and chilly winter’s day, and the light was just perfect for the bridal portrait shots back in the grounds at the Welcombe Hotel. It was a fantastic day filled with emotion and such a pleasure to be part of.

Looking back on the photos from our wedding brings a tear to my eye. They tell the story of the day so perfectly and so beautifully. Ben was fantastic and captured every moment so that we would never forget it. Thank you so much! Laura and Pete.See more…

Spend any amount of time on a US wedding blog and you’ll soon love the idea of a vineyard wedding. I see so many inspiration shoots and real weddings from vineyards – they’re always gorgeous, but just a wee bit unattainable for UK couples! Or so I thought… when I saw this beautiful wedding on Benjamin Toms‘ photography blog I had to share it with you. Fancy a vineyard wedding right here in the UK? Now you can. And here’s your photographer. Enjoy!

Ben said, “Chapel Down vineyard is a venue that I’ve wanted to work at for sometime and it did not disappoint. The guests had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful grounds on what was just the most perfect summer’s day before sitting down to enjoy an amazing wedding breakfast followed by great speeches. The evening’s entertainment was put on by the most amazing band I’ve ever seen. Gemma and Rudi came across them on a visit to the famous Ronnie Scott’s in London and convinced them to play at their wedding.”
