How did you choose your photographer?

We chose Patrick from M and G Wedding Photography as he was recommended by my brother for being really relaxed, personal and putting people at ease. After we searched online and looked through the website, we realised his work was amazing and exactly what we wanted for our big day – to be able to capture our wedding in a very natural way, so we and our guests would feel relaxed and our photographs would just capture us all having fun together.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

We love our photographs – the hardest part has been choosing which ones to print! Patrick captured our day perfectly, made us all feel very relaxed and helped make all of the planning process very easy. Looking back through the pictures it has been like reliving all of the special moments. We’d definitely recommend (and have been to friends) M and G Wedding Photography.

Tell us about your venue – what made this place special for you?

Our whole day was at the Crab & Lobster in Thirsk, first with our ceremony in the Crab Manor followed by our reception in the restaurant. When we were looking for venues we wanted somewhere that would feel cosy and intimate for our 50 guests and with it being a winter wedding.

We fell in love Crab & Lobster straight away for how quirky it is (not many venues have a yeti up the stairs, life-size Russian doll and deep sea diver hanging from the ceiling), for the amazing food choices (important to us as self-confessed foodies), for it’s beautiful grounds and also all of the individual hotel rooms and suites on-site for our guests to enjoy – as every one is themed on a different country and with hot tubs and saunas. While our wedding finished at midnight we didn’t go to bed until after 3am as we enjoyed the hot tub and some bubbles – and know that most of our guests did the same.

Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?

I had a lovely day looking for dresses with my mum, as I trust her opinion 100%. I must have tried on nearly 20 dresses in one day, but knew when I put on the one I chose from Pronovias (and the only one with sleeves) that it was the ‘one’ … but also the most expensive. I was very lucky to go for lunch with my mum and dad afterwards and he offered to buy me my perfect dress!! Pete’s a teacher and so wears suits every single day, so he wanted to choose something a bit different and went for a lovely three-piece tweed style suit.

Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness

I went with my mum, grandma and Pete’s mum to choose my flowers and it was a lovely day. We went to the florist recommended by the venue, Eufloria, in Thirsk and wasn’t disappointed. They helped match flowers to the colours of the bridesmaid dresses as well as showing me lots of really pretty options in winter flowers, including thistles, roses and veronica.

As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?

One of my friends from work recommended someone to make our cake, as we wanted something a bit different to match our Yorkshire themed wedding. It was yummy and with vanilla, chocolate and red velvet layers and definitely fit our brief – it had hills, sheep, and us on the top in our wedding outfits plus walking boots!

Tell us about any special personal touches, or creative projects you made yourselves

We’re very lucky to have creative friends and family who helped add very special touches to the day. Pete’s parents helped make our table plan (a map of Yorkshire complete with luggage tags) and place settings (made from scrabble that most of our guests took home and still have!). My lovely bridesmaid, Sarah made all of the signs for the day and a good friend Matt designed our personalised invites and sign, which has us on it with landmarks for Leeds and Hull – where we are from. We also had polaroid cameras and a jenga to personalise for our guest book. We also love music so we created all of the playlist for the DJ ourselves, including playing a song from my brother’s band Mauritia.

Did you personalise your vows or have any wedding readings? What were they?

We really wanted the day to be as personal as possible, so we had a Winnie the Pooh reading from Pete’s brother Matt and my best friend (and bridesmaid) Nicole wrote an amazing poem ‘Adventurous Souls’ which were both perfect!

We also added to our vows, including Pete promising to be my personal chef, beanbag warmer, dance partner and best friend. And I returned these by promising to be his fair weather walking companion, social life planner, travel buddy and best friend too. Amongst the happy tears from guests these got a few giggles!

What was your first dance song? Why did you choose it?

Toothpaste kisses by The Maccabees, as it’s a band we both like and it sums us up as we don’t like to take life too seriously and it was an upbeat song everyone could dance to.
