Sarah & Sanusi’s classic and timeless wedding in Rye, with Morris & Mully Wedding Photography

Published by Claire Gould on

It’s a very seasidey kind of week… I’m over the moon today to be sharing this gorgeous real wedding from Rye with you. Stunning couple Sarah and Sanusi tied the knot in safer times, so no covid restrictions… and this is a wonderful reminder that weddings WILL get back to being free, full of love and hugs and joy and happiness. And passionate confetti-throwing, and gorgeous group shots. Nonetheless, Sarah and Sanusi chose to have an intimate ceremony – before micro weddings were forced upon us, these two show they’re a wonderful choice: fewer guests can often mean more love in the room. Fact. They’ve told us lots about their day and the suppliers they used, so HUGE thanks to the lovely couple – oh, and hats off to Sanusi for making their wedding cake!!

Images are by Morris & Mully Photography, and I want to say thank you to lovely Laetitia from Makeup Angel for her contribution too!

With love,“english

How did you choose your photographer?

We were introduced to our photographer, Phil, the creator of Morris & Mully, through my sister. My sister knew him well as the husband of one of her friends and she told me about his extensive experience and background in photography. After an initial meeting with Phil, we established the style Sanusi and I were looking for, observational, natural and informal, was the exact style he loved to shoot! He was focused on capturing memories and telling the story of the day, so we absolutely knew he was the right photographer for us!

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

We were more than pleased! We were absolutely over the moon with the outcome. Phil went over and above on our wedding day, spending much longer with us than we would ever have expected. He scouted the most beautiful locations and ensured we were able to capture the soul of each location we were in. His eye for composition, attention to detail and creativity resulted in so many beautiful photographs we actually struggled to pick our favourites for an album!

Tell us about your venue – what made this place special for you?

The location we chose was a recommendation through my mum, who had been to a wedding in Rye and thought it was simply magical. I had visited Rye many times in the past and always thought it was a beautiful place. So we decided to get married in Rye Town Hall, a beautiful building both inside and out. This was then only a hop, skip & a jump away from where we then had our intimate reception dinner, at The George in Rye. We simply fell in love with this stunning and unique hotel. (Unfortunately, there was a fire at the hotel in July 2019 and they are still in the process of refurbishing this historical hotel to its former glory. It is due to reopen Summer of 2021 and we can’t wait to go back! We are sure it will be worth the wait!)

Did you love wearing your outfits? How was the dress / suit shopping experience?

I loved shopping for the dress – I went to The Pantiles Bride in Tunbridge Wells and felt very well taken care of. It is a beautiful wedding dress shop with a lovely team. My husband was easy-going and laid back about his suit, so he was happy to go to one of the many high-quality and well-priced suit shops in Westfields and picked up a beautiful blue suit there.

Hair & Makeup

My hair was done beautifully by my husband’s cousin, Phebean who owns a successful Salon in East London and my makeup was done by Laetitia of Makeup Angel. They both achieved the beautifully understated and natural look I was going for.

(As Laetitia told me about this beautiful wedding, and because I loved Sarah’s look I asked her to share a little about Sarah’s makeup.)

“When Sarah came to me for her wedding makeup trial, she stressed that she didn’t generally wear that much makeup and wanted a very soft look. Sarah was such a natural beauty that I totally agreed with her but wanted to make sure that she had enough definition to register well on camera and to do her gorgeous dress justice!

As always I started with the eyes which were incredibly blue, so I selected a palette of shimmering ivory swept across the lid, a soft pink- brown in the socket and a warm, rich brown for definition. This combination really enhanced her eye colour and waterproof gel eyeliner in brown above the upper lash line gave that extra definition. As Sarah’s natural lashes were full and long, I curled them and added waterproof mascara.

I used a hydrating primer and light foundation, and dusted the cheeks with bronzer and a soft coral on her apples for a healthy glow. Finally I choose a long lasting pink- brown lipstick to  perfectly balance with the cheeks and complete her bridal look.”

Did you hire a florist? Tell us about any floral amazingness

My sister’s friend’s mum is a part-time florist and very passionate about flower arranging so she very kindly offered her services to us for the flowers. The bouquet, button-hole and table arrangements were beautiful. We were very happy with the understated elegance we were aiming for!

As cake lovers here at English Wedding we’d LOVE to know who made your cake, and how delicious it was?

Rather unconventionally Sanusi made our wedding cake! He is a very good baker and we thought it would be an amazing memory to have of the day. He had a few practice runs and then spent the day before the wedding essentially baking our 3-tiered wedding cake! As we had an intimate wedding of less than 30 people, it wasn’t huge, but it was absolutely delicious!

Did you personalise your vows or have any wedding readings? What were they?

I asked my sister to surprise us with a reading and she chose Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres, which is beautiful!
