Join me today for a beautiful Kent wedding – gorgeous couple Sonia & Andy tied the knot on a gloriously sunny October day, and chose our friend Terence Joseph Photography to capture their story. Sonia dazzles in a stunning Jenny Packham dress. She told us “I knew I didn’t want the traditional white dress so I thought I would be searching for a long time but I found it really quickly and it was perfect for me. A bargain (from Debenhams) too! I found earrings and an art deco style crystal headpiece by Rose Red Rose White on Etsy, and my shoes were silver high heels from New Look. Andy wore a grey suit from T.M.Lewin with burgundy tie and pocket square from Swagger & Swoon – we found their colour matching service really useful.”

How did you choose your photographer?

We met Terence at an open day run by our venue and were so impressed with the quality and style of his photos that we just had to say “hi” and clicked with him straight away.

Terence did an absolutely wonderful job of capturing our day. We had a couple of informal but in-depth phone calls to talk through our plans and he really made us feel at ease. On the day itself, he was super organised and professional but his friendly and relaxed manner made him a real hit with our guests.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

The plan was to look through them together once we got home but when we received the link to the online gallery we couldn’t resist having a sneak peak at work. The photos were better than we ever imagined and we had a great time reliving all the great memories of the day.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Fun, personal, cosy, relaxed, atumnal, musical, hops, “cheers!”

Your wedding style or theme:

There wasn’t a specific style but we kept to our chosen colour scheme of blush pink and burgundy with silver accents.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

A lot of them were recommended by the venue but we also were lucky to happen upon some great local suppliers.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

You can get loads of great things on the high street nowadays from dresses to suits and accessories so you don’t need to spend a lot to look great on your big day.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

It was important to us that we had a lovely venue with good food and plenty of wine, and of course great photography to capture all of it. Oh and the foam glowsticks were worth every penny.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

Invitations and menu cards came from Vistaprint but the table plan and name cards were handmade. It’s amazing what you can do with some felt tip calligraphy pens and pearl stickers.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

They all wore multiway wrap dresses in a red wine colour and tied them in their favourite style.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

DIY make-up – in hindsight it would have been a lot less stressful to have left it to the professionals!

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

The lovely ladies at Flowers by Enchantment did a phenomenal job arranging our bouquets. The sandy roses, dark red dahlias and eucalyptus looked beautiful together.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

The barn already looked incredible with its wooden beams, dried hops and fairy lights so we didn’t need to add much. Amanda Jane dressed the chairs and we put a few homemade centrepieces on the tables for the wedding breakfast.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

Sonia’s mum spent months hand making origami flower centrepieces and posies to decorate the ceremony chairs. It was a real labour of love and they looked fantastic. Our guests must have loved them too because they all took some home. It’s really nice to see them in our friends’ houses when we visit.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We were so fortunate and grateful to have professional cake makers in the family (May and Grace), who offered to make our wedding cake. Each of the tiers had a different flavour so there was something for everyone, and the whole thing was covered in a white chocolate ganache, which was a tasty alternative to the traditional fondant icing. When it came to the decoration, we kept it simple and elegant with a some burgundy and pink sugar flowers.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

After the ceremony while everyone was enjoying some fizz, we had a muscial interlude in which various musical friends and family members took to the stage (corner of the pub) to entertain everyone with a few songs. I was extra surprised when Andy got up on the spur of the moment to sing the last number!

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Don’t be afraid to break from tradition if you want to, it’s your day!

What’s the best thing about being married?

We didn’t think being married would change anything but it’s a great feeling knowing that you’re a proper team and you’ll always have each other’s back.
