Discovering little gems of wedding venues around the UK is part of the charm of writing a wedding blog. Mostly, I get to explore the nooks and crannies of beautiful old houses and quirky wedding barns through my screen, when lovely couples and photographers submit their weddings for a feature. Occasionally I get to visit a wedding venue and discover it first-hand, and when those venues are a little too far away from my home in the Lakes I’m lucky to have English Wedding team members dotted around the country who can discover them for me!

Join us today for a look inside Bristol’s boutique wedding venue, Berwick Lodge, with our lovely friend and wedding photographer Martin Dabek Photography. Martin lives just 10 minutes from Berwick Lodge, which is on the outskirts of the city and close enough to the Bristol channel that you can see Wales from the gardens! Martin has photographed a wedding at Berwick Lodge, and is one of Bristol’s top wedding photographers – we’ve featured dozens of his weddings on English Wedding. He’s now more familiar than most with this gorgeous boutique wedding venue, having been invited to spend the night at Berwick Lodge so he could have a thorough explore of the place and tell us all about it!

Over to Martin…

“If a cosy and intimate venue sounds perfect for your wedding day in the south west of England, then Berwick Lodge should be on your shortlist. It’s located just 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Bristol and 27 km away from Bath. The house sits is on the edge of a forest making it very private and its perfect location gives you the opportunity see the breathtaking landscape of Wales from the windows.

Berwick Lodge offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The lovely staff are always eager to offer their assistance. The private owners of the hotel (Sarah and Fevzi) further heighten the pleasure of staying here. But to really understand the dedication and passion that these two put into crafting this marvellous place, let me take you back to where it all began.

Berwick Lodge was built in the 1920’s by General and Mrs Sampson Way as a lavish dowry for their daughter. However, later on, it was used as a hospital and a home for adults with learning difficulties. Now, the hotel is owned by Sarah and Fevzi Arkan who bought it on Valentines Day in 2004 after they completely fell in love with it – making this the perfect venue for a wedding because it has love rooted in its very walls.

Another reason why you should definitely come and see Berwick Lodge for yourselves is the phenomenal attention given to detail. The simplest example of this is the delicious homegrown, food that is grown in the gardens and frequently used in the dishes. The food was amazing and we had butternut squash salad – it was as delicious as it sounds! Wedding meals are created by a team of passionate chefs in the spectacular award-winning, fine dining restaurant. Your wedding breakfast will use locally sourced ingredients and fresh vegetables from Berwick Lodge’s own kitchen garden!

My favourite thing was the reoccurring “theme of ancient Turkish civilizations” which was present in the hotel bedrooms. The luxurious, en suite rooms are also named after ancient civilizations. Every one of the bedrooms is unique and clearly designed with style. The impressive size bathrooms are very luxurious and clean. Your guests will love staying here for the luxurious comfort Berwick Lodge provides.

Berwick Lodge is a wonderfully charming and stunning place to get married and I promise that you will love it as much as we did if you decide to tie the knot here!

Nestled in the exquisite surroundings of the British countryside deep in the heart of the South West, with views reaching across to Wales, Berwick Lodge truly is a hidden gem. The magnificent, privately owned manor house dates back to the 1890s and was once admired for the flourishing rose gardens that grew within its walls. Today, Berwick Lodge remains more enchanting than ever having been restored to its former glory.

Offering a beautiful collection of individually designed rooms and award-winning restaurant, Berwick Lodge offers couples the opportunities to host a ceremony or reception for 10 to 100 of your nearest and dearest. Alternatively, a marquee reception for up to 400 people can be hosted in the lodge’s 18 acres of enchanting gardens.
