Our best weddings from 2018! #2 – Tig & Piers

Published by Claire Gould on

Welcome, lovely, to the second day of ‘English Wedding lite’ – my look back at some of our favourite weddings from our 2018 archive. Yesterday we reminisced on James & Keye’s festival wedding; today we’re all about luxe, glamorous and timeless wedding style with beautiful Tig & Piers. They were married in Nottingham and chose Martin Makowski to capture their day. You’ll love their flowers – they’re by Lou at No 27 Floral Design.

Sometimes it’s all about the dress… and gorgeous bride Tig told us she fell in love with hers – it’s just beautiful! “I didn’t actually see my finished dress until 2 days before the wedding as I decided to change the top from a strapless style to a halter neck with only 6 weeks to spare…

The designer was amazing and completely agreed that the halter style would suit me better so was willing to adapt it though the deadline was tight. I couldn’t have been happier and adored that the colour was not your traditional ivory, white or oyster. I learnt: go with your gut!” The designer was Kula Tsurdiu, whose beautiful boutique is based in Nottingham’s brilliantly bohemian Lace Market.

Tig and Piers’ flowers are breathtaking too – I mean, just look at those heart meltingly beautiful blooms in such exciting colours! I think they’re my faves, ever.We had a local florist, Lou at No 27 Floral Design, supply the buttonholes, bridal bouquet and bridesmaid bouquets. I had found her on instagram and stalked her pictures for months. This lady is such a talent and so down-to-earth that I was very grateful to have her to do our flowers. They were stunning. Our table and venues flowers were all bought from local supermarkets e.g. Lidl. The two days before the wedding my Mother, Mother-in-law to be and my bridesmaids helped to put flowers around the venue, make beautiful table displays and a wedding wreath.”

A friend had been a bridesmaid at a wedding that Martin had shot and told me how fantastic his pictures were but also said how comfortable everyone had felt whilst he was working. I took a look at the pictures from that wedding and absolutely loved his documentary style and so explored further, checking out his website and other client testimonials. Something that Piers and I are very keen to do when we can is support local businesses, particularly independent ones, so Martin being local too hit a big bonus box for us. We looked at other photographers’ work but there is a way in which Martin captures smaller but quirky details about peoples’ weddings that stood him out from the crowd.

We could not have hoped for more. Martin documented our day, capturing everything exactly as it was-even me brushing my teeth! We were absolutely thrilled with our pictures as they captured everything and everyone from a real perspective. It was important to us that nothing felt staged or false and that where possible we could capture many a “true” moment. He caught some shots that we will treasure for a long long time. Our online photo album came through within 2 weeks of the wedding and to say it extended the celebrations is an understatement. We got all excited all over again and re-lived the day but also saw many other perspectives we hadn’t known about.
Martin works so quietly but also with such a relaxed manner that in the nicest way you don’t always know he is there. He was so professional throughout and communication with us from booking to even now is excellent.

The moment we saw our wedding photos for the first time was so special. We were still on our honeymoon in Thailand when the email from Martin came through saying “Your pictures are ready to view“. In a flurry of excitement and anticipation we went straight down to the hotel reception where they had a big guest computer and logged in straightaway so we could see them on a big screen rather than our phones. We were there in the guest lobby for approx 2 hours going through each of them one by one. Looking through them all we laughed, cried (happy tears to be clear) and had had chests swelling with pride. We talked back through moments that the pictures triggered, further cementing them into our memories. We couldn’t wait to share them with family and friends and see what they all thought too!

We didn’t really have a set theme in mind. We tried to make the most of the environment we were in which was a lovely British country garden in spring.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Plan ahead as much as you possibly can with a set budget in mind from the beginning.
We set a day a week, aptly named ” Project Wedding Wednesday”, where we set to do lists on a project management website called Trello and categorised each aspect of the wedding to help us prioritise tasks. This enabled us to clearly identify where our money needed to be spent, compare costs and consider where money could be saved. We would also say to communicate clearly with friends and family what you would like help with as this ensures everyone delivers their part to ensure you get the best day for the best value!

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Photographer hands down.
The photos are what will keep our day fresh in our memories and we will be able to cherish for years to come.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We were very fortunate and a friend, Dominic, designed and printed our invitations. We bought our recycled envelopes from Amazon. To save on stationery costs and be more environmentally friendly we sent out save the dates via e-mail and also asked for RSVPs via e-mail too which worked fantastically.
The names places and table display were made from garden leaves with gold writing to help keep costs down but also fitted into the garden scheme perfectly.
The order of service was printed by a company local to us.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

Shoes were patent cream Miss KG kitten heels that I have had for years but are classic, elegant and importantly worn in.
I wore gold and peacock pearl drop earrings that Piers had bought for me years ago and wore them with a matching bangle.
I had gold honeybee hair pins in my hair that a friend had bought for a previous birthday.
My engagement ring-obvs!

And what did the groom wear?

A navy and grey check Paul Smith suit and blush pink tie which was staying true to the local theme, being a Nottingham born designer. Dark cherry brogues that were also Paul Smith but not worn in….!
Breitling watch

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

I had four wonderful bridesmaids. My sister and 3 friends who are all so fantastically different to each other that it felt wrong to put them in the same outfit. I wanted them to feel comfortable on the day and for them to also still look like themselves, so gave them a broad colour scheme and let them choose their own outfits. The results were awesome! A jumpsuit and 3 dresses: some sequined, some plain and different necklines. The photos speak for themselves and show the wonderful women am I fortunate to be friends with and a sister to.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

After much debate, we got the pros in which was SO wonderful and worth every penny. This enabled me to relax (as much as I could) during the morning and enable my hardworking bridesmaids and Mother to have some pamper time. Both Sarah and Jo not only delivered but also added to the atmosphere and fun of the morning.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We were fortunate to have such a wonderful venue thanks to Piers’ Mum who began prepping the Old Hall a year in advance with help from local skilled workers. For the day we put up a few decorations such as pom poms (bought from ebay), lights and candles. The marquee, that was fixed off the house on the garden patio, contained lots of existing shrubs and flower beds which added an extra natural, floral element and it also had floor to ceiling glass windows and doors that looked on to the back drop of the garden which was beautiful.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

We used Douwe Egberts coffee jars, sprayed with a little gold paint, for our table vases alongside used Laurent Perrier pink champagne bottles for candle stick holders and other jam jars for tea lights on our tables. Our welcome sign was a painted palette. All of these homemade touches added a personalised element to the day.
Family members maid some delicious puddings for our pudding table (Thank you Preet & Aunty Amanda!)

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We didn’t have a wedding cake-so broke tradition not having a cutting the cake moment!
Instead we had a pudding table with all of our favourite sweets, such as; Beau’s Bakehouse Caramel Shortbread, Hambleton Bakery Egg custard tarts and eccles cakes to name a few as well as the delicious home made items.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We had a friend, Camilla, play the flute accompanied by a pianist during our ceremony.
A friend, Adam, offered to DJ at our wedding as a wedding gift and our sound system for the whole day was also kindly given to us by family (Martine & Patrick) as a wedding gift.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Piers: You will forget something- don’t worry about it.
Tig: Stay true to what you want to do no matter what. It is YOUR day.

What’s the best thing about being married?

We are an official team.
