A review of Storrs Hall – timeless tranquility from a Lake District wedding venue

Published by Claire Gould on

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you’re having a lovely relaxing weekend – and staying cosy and warm! Isn’t it freezing out there?!! Our mountains have just a sprinkling of snow on the tops this week! Before I begin today’s feature I wanted to put out a little reminder about our 50% offer on advertising packages for the coming year – you can still save until Monday, on either my Tier 2 or Tier 3 packages. Find all the details you need here!

So in October I was invited by the lovely people at Storrs Hall to come stay and see their hotel – it was an easy offer to accept, so on a quiet Monday evening me and Mr English Wedding packed our bags and headed into the Lake District for a treat!

Storrs Hall is a familiar sight for most visitors to the Lakes. It’s set back from the main road – an intriguing mystery I’d always wanted to discover first hand. We must drive past it every month on our way to one mountain or another, as we spend every free weekend walking in the fells. I’d been to a wedding showcase at Storrs Hall way back in 2013 – but only really seen one room, in a whirlwind of wedding dresses and cakes!

As a wedding venue Storrs Hall is classic and timeless with an elegant welcome from a lovely team of staff. It’s set right on the lake shore with private woodlands, its own jetty and the famous Temple of Heroes (see Anthony Hopkins enjoying the views on Instagram!) We had a little wander around on arrival then checked in to see what our room would be like.

Storrs Hall can be an exclusive use venue, which means it’s yours for the weekend of your wedding. Alternatively, they offer an intimate weddings package for smaller occasions, or a ‘Just for Two’ elopement package! The drawing room and pavilion are licensed for civil weddings, and Storrs can cater for up to 80 day guests and 110 for your evening reception. For exclusive use weddings Storrs Hall has 30 rooms to accommodate your guests, and these are included in the price you pay – so you can decide how much to charge your guests for their stay.

Luxe accommodation

Our room was fabulous – and the bathroom was AMAZING with a double walk in rain shower, twin sinks, a TV over the bath and enough space for a spot of parkour (we didn’t!). Everything was spotless. The bed was pleasantly huge, the sofa plush and comfy, and the Nespresso machine and biscuits an unexpected treat.

Storrs Hall has a choice of luxury accommodation for you and your guests, with spacious suites overlooking the grounds and lake, as well as the separate boathouse which is a short stroll away from the main hotel and sits on the lakeshore, complete with outdoor hot tub – and the views are spectacular!

After a browse through Storrs’ wedding brochure we headed down to the bar…

Fine dining for a foodie wedding

All of Storrs Hall’s function rooms boast beautiful views of the quieter shores of Lake Windermere. We enjoyed a delicious meal as afternoon turned to dusk, the chef’s expertise promising the most delectable cuisine for any foodie wedding. I’m vegetarian and Mr English Wedding rarely eats meat, so we were curious to see how we’d be treated at Storrs – Cumbria as a whole being less than brilliant for veggies! – and we were very happy indeed with the cuisine on offer. A total win.

A relaxing atmosphere and elegant style

Something that struck us straight away on arrival at Storrs Hall was the music – this is a venue where attention to detail is absolutely key, and looking after guests means more than simply providing a hot meal and a fluffy pillow. Storrs feels like home. The music plays a part in this, as does the cosy furniture, the spacious and welcoming lounge areas, and the characterful bar (which dates back to the 1800s and was originally a feature at Blackpool Winter Gardens).

A destination wedding venue at home

Most of the couples who marry at Storrs Hall come from outside of Cumbria – often travelling from Cheshire or Lancashire for a weekend wedding which feels like a luxury holiday in the Lakes! I chatted to the lovely wedding coordinator who told me they’d recently hosted a wedding for an Australian couple with links to the area who’d travelled the 9,000+ miles to get married here! With the rise in popularity of weekend weddings and the option for you and your guests to explore the Lake District in the days after your wedding, Storrs really does offer more than most English wedding venues!

I’m lucky to have been invited to such a beautiful venue and I’d like to thank everyone at Storrs Hall for making us feel so welcome. I know some amazing wedding suppliers in the area – many of whom were mentioned by the guys at Storrs Hall when I asked about local wedding businesses – so if you’re thinking of getting married up here do check out some of these –
