Hana & Alex’s pretty pastel blue wedding at Gate Street Barn, with Jessica Grace Photography

Beautiful bride Hana married Alex at Gate Street Barn on the scorching bank holiday last August. Despite the drama of a street fair trying to stop the bride’s car getting to the church (something that could only happen in the Surrey countryside!) the day was filled with so many laughs and so much love. With a gorgeous summer evening sunset, and the bride and groom recreating the iconic Dirty Dancing routine as their first dance, it is safe to day that they had the time of their lives!

Alex went to secondary school with Jesse and saw that she had become a photographer on Facebook, so i went on her website to have a look and was blown away at how amazing and natural her photography was.

Me and Alex were both over the moon with Jesse. From the moment we met her, she made us feel completely relaxed and confident that she would do an amazing job. We are not a lovey dovey couple in public and were unsure as to how we would cope on the wedding day with everyone looking at us and having our photo taken but this was all made so easy and relaxed as Jesse took natural photos and captured the day perfectly from every angle. It was such a pleasure having Jesse with me from the moment I started getting ready in the morning to the minute she had to bid farewell and not a single detail was missed. Jesse fitted in perfectly with our wedding and many of our guests complimented us on what a fantastic job she did. She has an exceptional eye for capturing a moment and knowing just what makes a gorgeous photo. We would both highly recommend Jesse to any couple getting married.

It’s always a momentous occasion when you first see your photos. I literally rushed home when I heard they had arrived and eagerly sat waiting for Alex to come home. We were completely blown away with how perfectly Jesse had captured each and every moment of our wedding day with such precision and grace. I got a bit teary looking through them, being able to relive each moment and still do when I look and think back to that day. Jesse really has given us a gift to treasure forever.

My bouquet was made by Hannah Martin using powder blue hydrangea, blush David Austin roses, pink hypericium berries and silver eucalyptus and tied using wide band hessian ribbon. The bridesmaids had posies of blush David Austin roses, and the groomsmen had a single blush rose a little bit of hydrangea, and hypericium berries. The flowers were fantastic. We also had an archway which was transported from the church to the venue and large pedestal arrangements. The Venue was beautiful without decoration but as the previous wedding had foliage on the chandeliers we chose to keep this as well. We hung a small amount of bunting in the main barn but it would have still looked amazing without. The flowers at the venue grounds made it beautiful. We set up a sweetie table and had our surfboard in the peasantry for decoration too.

We made so many things for our wedding, not just to be cost effective but to make it personal. We spent hours collecting driftwood to make a frame for our table plan and this is one of the elements we were most proud of and guests complimented us on. We also gathered loads of pebbles and spent a lot of time writing each guests name on to make place names. Order of services were printed and made by us. One of the groomsmen, Nigel, drew an amazing unique picture for us to use as a fingerprint guestbook. This looks great on our wall. The pew ends and favours were also made by us. We have become rather good at arts and crafts now.

Wedding venue:

Gate Street Barn, Bramley

Wedding month:

August

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

A perfect sunny magical day with lots of dancing

Your wedding style or theme:

We went for a beautiful rustic, surf/beach theme complete with a surfboard for everyone to sign.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

It was a mixture really, some came recommended through the venue such as our caterers and florist. Others we found on the internet and chose after Alex’s intense scrutiny of every single review. We also went to a few wedding fairs and got some recommendations there.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Don’t get married?!….no we are only joking. We would say get creative. Try to make things yourself as this makes the wedding more personal and special to you. A wedding doesn’t have to cost thousands of pounds and we actually felt that making our own place names, service sheets, table plan and pew ends just added to the uniqueness of our day and guests praised us on our exceptional efforts. It was also so much fun having our bridesmaids and groomsmen over to help. We couldn’t have done it without them.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

The band was expensive but completely worth it and the food was exceptional. The Bridesmaids and Groomsmen looked fantastic too so very happy.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

Our wedding invites were made by Emma Hookins at ElmTree stationery, but everything else was lovingly made by us and our family/friends. We owe a lot of pebbles to Westward Ho! for table names and also the driftwood we collected to make our table plan frame. We spent many hours gathering resources from Hobbycraft.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

Absolutely yes! I knew the moment I put it on it was the ONE!! The lady pulled back the curtain and I was just frozen staring at myself in the mirror with tears in my eyes. I felt so fantastic. I remember saying to my Mum and sister ‘I actually look beautiful’ with the biggest grin on my face. I tried so many different dresses and it was not the style I had in mind but it made me feel amazing.

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

I bought my dress which was designed by Ronald Joyce from Mae Bridal in Witney, Oxfordshire.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

My dress already had quite a bit of detail so I only wore a Swarovski bracelet bought for me by my sister and some pearl earrings. In my hair I had a pearl and rose hair vine, which looked stunning. My Shoes were Ivory lace court shoes from Elsa by Rainbow. On my flowers a had my dear Nana’s brooch. This meant so much to me as my Nana sadly was not with us for the day.

And what did the groom wear?

Alex wore an Air Force Blue Suit with a cream waist coat and light pink cravat and tan brogues from Ted Baker. He looked very Dapper!

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

The bridesmaids wore full length Periwinkle dresses from Coast with lace detail on the top and jewellery given to them in their bridal gifts. They all looked stunning.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

Hair was done by Lucy Alexander and her good friend Hannah did all the make up.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We went for a fairly traditional 4 tiered White Regal icing cake with small details and simplistic flowers. The cake was a delicious lemon flavour. We chose this as it tied in nicely with our simple rustic theme and we added a cute personalised wedding bunting topper. Our Cake was made by a good friend Alice Michieli.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We decided to surprise all our guests with our first dance. Everyone was expecting a slow soppy first dance to Time of our life, just swaying but suddenly when the beat kicked in we swung full speed into Ceroc which we had secretly been learning. Everyone started cheering. It was great. We hired Motown Gold for our wedding band and they were fantastic. As we had several Greek relatives as guests they played some Greek music and everyone joined in with traditional Greek dancing. It was such a laugh and good fun.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Enjoy every moment surrounded by your nearest and dearest as it goes so quickly but don’t forget to steal some precious moments with you new husband or wife as well.

What’s the best thing about being married?

No more wedding planning!! Instead we get to enjoy our evenings snuggled on the sofa and seeing our family and friends.
