Beautiful ‘golden hour’ images from Kat & Ben’s Rockbeare Manor wedding, with Evolve Photography
Kat and Ben are the sweetest couple – and look amazing on their day! The sunset shots are breathtaking, the little details of their day are wonderful and their venue, Devon’s Rockbeare Manor, is incredible.
“The first time I tried on my wedding dress was at the South West Bridal Show. I was with my mum, one of my bridesmaids and her mum and had walked around the show with nothing catching my eye until I picked out a dress which I loved for its unusual cut around the neckline. There weren’t any changing rooms at this particular stand so before I knew it, I was huddled in the corner trying this dress on. As it was the first wedding dress i’d ever tried on, I made arrangements to try on others at a later date as I wasn’t sure if our reaction to it was just because it was the first one I tried. Nothing else came close though and I soon purchased the dress.
My dress was Sottero and Midgley – Winifred, purchased from Pirouette in Exeter. My earrings were silver and pearl drop from Pandora, shoes were closed toe Rainbow Club, and my hair piece and bracelet were from Debenhams. The most important accessory to me on the day was a brooch of my nans who sadly passed away several years ago.
The groom and his groomsmen wore Cameron Ross and these were hired from Rossetti Brides in Maidencombe Devon. The suits were blue with a tweed tie and waistcoat. They were exactly what we had been looking for as we wanted something with a bit more of a modern feel.
Wedding photographer’s website:
A friend of my mums had recently used Mark (Evolve Photography) and recommended him to us. When picking our photographer, we wanted to go off recommendations rather than just looking at someone’s photos. I then checked out the Evolve Photography website and before i knew it i was sat at my desk with tears in my eyes from looking at other couples beautiful photos.
We were so pleased with our photographer. We had been to weddings before where the photographer can be so demanding but with Mark he felt like he was another guest. He was great at coordinating the pictures and getting people together and in the morning whilst getting ready, we barely noticed he was there. We had said to Mark that we would like the sunset shots if the sunset was on our side and fortunately it was. The sunset shots are our favorite photos from our wedding and even though it had rained during part of the day, the dark clouds and puddles almost make the pictures more dramatic.
We were so excited to receive our wedding photos and to share them with our friends and family. Mark captured our day perfectly and has provided us with memories we will treasure forever.
Our wedding venue was the beautiful Rockbeare Manor in Exeter. Upon receiving their Brochure this was a venue that we loved. When we when to view it is was still in the final stages of a huge refurbishment but we knew it was the venue for us and never looked at anywhere else. We liked the fact that it was so light and airy and had beautiful grounds. As it was a new wedding venue none of our family and friends had been married there and we knew they would love it as much as we did.
Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?
Even more perfect that we could have even imagined!
Your wedding style or theme:
When people asked if we were having a theme, I used to describe it is a classic English wedding. There was no particular theme, just fairly simple with a splash of color throughout.
Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)
Mainly recommendation from friends and family.
The South West Bridal Show.
Online websites, blogs etc.
What’s your top tip for saving money?
Enlist the help of family and friends who have any talents for crafting etc. Also, keep an eye out for any offers, I bought lots of pieces around Christmas and New Year when there were sales on.
… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?
Besides spending more than initially planned on the venue, we spent more to hire a band rather than having a DJ. Mafia 4 are a local band who at the time of booking, we hadn’t even seen but had heard they were great. One of my main worries was that the dance floor may be empty which is never what you want, especially when you’ve splashed out on band. Luckily this wasn’t the case and even after the wedding, people were talking about how busy the dance floor was. They did a fantastic job on getting the party started.
Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?
Fortunately my brother is an architect so he offered to create the stationery, including the table plan, name cards, table numbers and menu cards.
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
Our gorgeous bridesmaids wore Dessy 2906 in lavender and our flower girl was in a lovely dress from Debenhams.
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
My cousin Dawn Booth has been working as a make-up artist for over 10 years and kindly offered to make-over the bridal party at no cost. Our hairdresser was a school friend Lucy Mitchmore who managed to provide myself and the bridesmaids with a lovely up do.
Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)
Our wedding flowers were supplied by the very talented Holly at Hollyhocks www.hollyhocks-shop.co.uk. When i first went to see Holly i explained that I didn’t know much about flowers and apart from roses, she could pretty much have free rein of what we had. They were made up of beautiful shades of lilac, lavender, cream and a touch of pink and including memory lane roses, lavender, posies and other flowers and foliage. As well as bouquets and buttonholes we had arrangements for the fire places, center pieces, the signing table in the ceremony room and two jugs with a mix of flowers to compliment the bouquets and also gyp and posies tied to the pew of the chair on the end of the rows.
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
Rockbeare Manor is a venue that speaks for itself. It has neutral walls with large windows, chandlers and warming fire places. We knew there wasn’t much of a need to overdress the venue so most of the decor was made up with floral arrangements. Our center pieces were fish bowls with floral arrangements in and these really spoke for themselves. Other than that we used a few candles and decorated a couple of crates we had with pieces from home.
Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?
As well as the stationery made by my brother, the fudge used for our favors was made by his girlfriend. The table plan required a large frame around it so a colleague at work gave us one which I then painted with Annie Sloan chalk paint to give it more of a vintage feel.
The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?
Our wedding cake was made by one of my bridesmaids’ mum. Not a professional baker by trade and only making them as a hobby she makes the most exceptional cakes. We’ve used Julie Gibson to make us cakes before and there was never going to be anyone else who I would have wanted to make it for us. We had a 4 tier cake, sponges included chocolate, lemon, victoria sponge and fruit cake. The cake had white icing and was dressed with purple icing flowers.
Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?
Mafia 4 were a great addition to our wedding and already two of my friends getting married next year have booked them too. We also arranged for clay pigeon shooting to occupy our guests between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. This went down well but due to the wet weather we closed this down early which was a shame.
Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:
Try and spread the cost by planning on buying certain items each month so it doesn’t all need to be bought at once. Try and shop when there are deals on or get promotional discounts when attending wedding shows.
What’s the best thing about being married?
I’m so proud to call Ben my husband and that is probably my favorite thing.
