I LOVE all the colour in Anna and John’s Hampshire wedding – it’s wonderful. Orchids and paper cranes in vibrant colours make this a real treat for my eyes – and this gorgeous couple put so much into decorating their venue, my screen looks like summer! Don’t miss their table plan – it truly is a work of art 🙂
John and I both have eclectic taste, we were both really influenced by travel especially to tropical lands. The bright and colourful flowers and decorations of these tropical destinations helped us to choose our colour scheme. I also have a love of orchids, they are so beautiful and elegant, origami cranes just felt right.
Our flowers were everything and more than we could have imagined! Lovely Lynne (http://www.fioribylynne.co.uk/) was amazing, her wealth of knowledge and ideas led to the creation of one of my favourite aspects of our day. The bright, colourful exotic flowers encompassed the theme of the wedding.
Anna and John’s wedding photographer is the lovely Andreea from VeVi photography. Do look her up – she’s a fabulous character and a talented and passionate photographer whose weddings I hope to be sharing more often on the English Wedding Blog!
“I absolutely love this fun couple. For their engagement shoot they had a paint fight on the beach! So I couldn’t wait for their day and they certainly had a day that was a joy to photograph. It was a fun wedding bursting with colour and a really fun vintage twist, but my favourite part was the very touching and personal ceremony. I found it inspiring that they weren’t afraid to be bold with their colour choices contrasting with a very elegant classical room for their reception.
Their personality really did shine through in all their detail choices and the beautiful orchid centerpieces were strategic too. Each centerpiece was on a table with one very important person like bridesmaids, the friend who did their make up, the one that made the cake. And it was done so as a surprise that at the end of the party, that would be the present for each of these important people. It was a lovely idea I thought! The Skylark was a perfect venue for them being split in the beautiful barn for the ceremony and I loved that they decided to use the modern room for the reception so they had the amazing contrast between the elegant room and all their beautiful colours.” ~ Andreea, VeVi Photography
Wedding photographer’s website:
How did you choose your photographer?
Choosing the right wedding photographer was always a very important aspect of our wedding. We both really wanted to find someone that would share and understand our ideas of how we wanted to capture our big day- after all the photos last forever even after the memories become a little fuzzy. We attended a few wedding fairs and collected various leaflets and began doing our research. Andreea’s website showcasing her previous work really helped us to narrow down our search. She was the first photographer we actually talked to, and the last. We just loved her and her ideas. She was very willing to work with us to capture our big day. She has the right amount of crazy! We just knew that she would be able to capture the fun in our day.
Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!
Very, she definitely delivered! We were both so excited to see our photos! We had seen her working really hard throughout the day and many of our guests commented on how thorough she was, but also how she was able to make everyone at ease, after all not everyone enjoys having their photos taken. Andreea not only captured our day, but we will cherish the memories she has given us forever.
Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?
Ooooo how exciting! We had waited for what seemed liked forever (it wasn’t) but could not wait to see the photos, we could hardly contain our excitement. It felt like we were reliving our entire wedding, and seeing the wedding from a different perspective.
Skylark Country Club (http://www.skylarkcountryclub.co.uk/), What a beautiful find this venue was. John and I both have quite an eclectic taste and felt that our wedding venue either had to match, or allow us to go wild. Skylark provided us with just that. Freedom.
A close friend recommended Skylark, and said that it is ‘just perfect for you two’, and how right she was. The first time we drove to Skylark, we both just knew that we would love it. The entire atmosphere, the very open grounds and light and airy buildings gave us a glimpse of our wedding day. It was definitely love at first sight.
What made this venue even better was the very welcoming staff, they were always on hand to answer any questions and were very happen to listen to my crazy ideas!
Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?
The best day of our lives. Cliche but so true.
Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)
Luckily a lot of our suppliers came from recommendations. Other suppliers came from wedding fairs, and just general internet searches.
What’s your top tip for saving money?
Plan early, be thorough with your planning- its all the little costs that catch you out.
… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?
The band. They were amazing, the dance floor was packed, and they kept the party going for the rest of the night.
Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?
Luckily for John and I we have a very talented friend who designed our stationery. Jess’s artistic style captured our theme and gave our guests a sneak peek into our wedding.
Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?
Yes! It was the first dress I saw in the flesh, and that was it. I had to have it. My mum and sister made me try on others, but it was no good. I had to get that dress.
Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:
My dress was called Spencer and was designed by Maggie Sottero. We bought the dress from a lovely little bridal shop in Salisbury called Brides by Victoria (http://www.bridesbyvictoria.co.uk/index.html)
Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!
My dress was 1920’s and I felt that the jewellery and shoes had to also reflect that era. However, finding jewellery was difficult, I ended up sourcing a lovely pair of vintage drop earrings from the internet. My shoes were designed by Roland Cartier, and were very comfortable. I was able to dance all night in them! I borrowed a bracelet from my mother in law. My last and favourite piece of jewellery was a silver sixpence with a pearl and something blue, it was attached to the back of my dress and felt it gave me good luck. It will be something i hope to give to daughters on their wedding day.
And what did the groom wear?
John loves a good suit, he therefore was very particular about what he was going to wear on his big day. He chose a bright blue three-piece French Connection suit.
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
My bridesmaids both rocked a lovely floor length fuchsia number from Coast.
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
All of the girls make up was done by our very talented friend and sister in law to be Alice. It was just lovely to have someone who is going to become a member of the family to help with the beautifying process! Hairstyling we relied on a professional, i wanted hairstyles that reflected our individual styles. I really wanted to try something different in my hair, so ended up going with victory rolls, my sister Katia had a lovely soft tumble of curls, and Johns sister Laura had an updo mohawk to complement her half shaved head.
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
We could have gotten away with not decorating at all. Skylark is just beautiful, bright and airy. I wanted to keep a nice open feeling throughout the venue whilst incorporating the bright colours that made up our tropical theme. In the barn we decorated with loads and loads of fairy lights, about 5kg of rose petals, paper lanterns, candles and homemade flowers. The function room and bar area were decorated with yet more fairy lights, paper flowers, candles and orchids. Loads and loads of orchids, all of which complemented with origami cranes.
Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?
We certainly loved designing the homemade elements, but after folding the 100th origami crane it certainly crossed our minds that it may have been easier to do something different! Luckily we have very helpful friends and family who helped with the paper flowers.
The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?
We both wanted a cake people would eat! We opted for home baked 3 tier lemon drizzle and white chocolate cake. It went down a treat with the guests.
Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?
Music plays a big part of my families life, my father in particular loves good music. We wanted to have a band that would get the party started and keep it going throughout the night. A friend at work recommended the Salvation (http://thesalvation.co.uk/) and they made our dreams come true. I didn’t leave the dance floor all night. They were amazing! Would love to see them again, we keep hoping that friends of ours will book them for their weddings!
Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:
Enjoy the planning. It certainly one of my favourite aspects of the wedding. All of the research and careful planning allowed us to be relatively stress free leading up to the big day. We organised all of decorations per room area for ease of set up. It also allowed the OCD in both of us a chance to relax and trust that the venue would set up how we liked- they also appreciated it as it meant they would be able to set up quickly and spend longer perfecting the venue.
What’s the best thing about being married?
John and I have been together 6years before we got married. Having a wedding was the next step in sharing our feelings with one another and our families. It was a wonderful day to show each how much we care and spend a beautiful day with all of our loved ones. Being married adds a sense of calm to our busy and sometime stressful lives.
