Today you get to see one of the loveliest weddings to grace my inbox this year. The ideas are wonderful; the craftsmanship fabulous on so many levels. Gorgeous bride Emma made her own dress and corset – she looks amazing and I love her style! I love the flowers, the way the venue looks, the bar(!) – how cool does that look?! – and Peter and Emma are just perfect together.
Peter designed all our wedding stationery using the Adobe Creative Suite then had it printed through Printed.com. He did a fantastic job, it was very personal to us and very reasonably priced.
Despite working as a costume maker and having made wedding dresses for people in the past I had never really thought about what style I would choose for myself. I tried a few dresses on in a couple of bridal shops but I quickly realised that the only way to get exactly what I wanted would be to make it myself! The most important thing for me was to feel comfortable in the dress so I could move easily and enjoy the day. I decided to make an evening dress as well using the same top pattern as my wedding dress but with a knee length, full skirt so that I could really relax and enjoy the dancing in the evening. This was such a good decision, my wedding dress is still in perfect condition and I enjoyed every minute of the day and night.
I wanted a simple elegant dress that had a timeless feel and flattered my figure. Making it myself allowed me to source beautiful silk and lace so that it felt wonderful to wear. Making a separate corset and slip meant that the dress itself was as light and comfortable to wear as possible. I was concerned that I would find the process quite stressful, but I actually really enjoyed making it.
I made a plain silk tulle veil, simple and elegant to complement my dress. My shoes were from John Lewis, comfortable but still elegant with both dresses. I also wore pearl drop earrings which were a 30th birthday present from my sister. A diamond necklace from my husband which he gave to me the evening before the wedding, so thoughtful of him! My mum also gave me my late grandmother’s diamond engagement ring to wear for the day as my ‘something borrowed.’

How did you choose your photographer?
Peter enjoys photography and therefore it was important for him to find a photographer that he felt had a good eye for composition. After finding Samie on a local search it quickly became apparent that she was the photographer for us. She had some fantastic photographs on her website and her portraits were really very special. Meeting Samie in a local cafe for a chat we realised that she was also the loveliest person you could possibly hope to meet and as excited about our wedding as we were! She was so interested in getting to know us and particularly in the fact I was making my wedding dress. We trusted her immediately to take photos that were natural and relaxed.
Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!
Samie Lee is not only a brilliant photographer, she was an absolute joy to have around our wedding day. We wanted to have people involved with the wedding that we genuinely liked as it was very important for us that we felt as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Samie really went the extra mile, visiting me to take photos when I was making my wedding dresses and just keeping in touch to see how we were getting on. She had a genuine interest in us and our wedding which was so sweet.
Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?
We were absolutely thrilled with them! It was so nice to revisit the day again as it goes by so quickly. Samie photographs were beautifully composed and captured so many special moments.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?
It genuinely was the happiest day of our lives.
Your wedding style or theme:
Traditional wedding ceremony with a relaxed summer barn reception
Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)
We tried to use personal recommendations as much as possible. We had 5 months to organise the wedding so we had to be decisive so it was helpful to use suppliers that we trusted.
What’s your top tip for saving money?
To save money we did all the stationery, favours, bunting ourselves on a budget. I made my wedding dress and did the bridesmaid dress alterations as I could do that to save some money.
… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?
The band were absolutely incredible and worth every penny! The wedding venue were fantastic and the food was incredible, our guests were very happy.
What did the groom wear?
Peter and his groomsmen hired their suits from Moss Bros. They wore Charcoal wool morning suit’s with matching trousers and dove grey waistcoats. Peter wore a white tie and the groomsmen had mint coloured ties to match the bridesmaids dresses.
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
I found the bridesmaid dresses on ASOS. They were a pretty colour which I though would look lovely on all my bridesmaids. They were a classic style that would compliment all their figures and would be comfortable and easy to wear on the day. Once I found them and checked the girls were happy we decided to base our colour scheme around that.
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
Grace from www.lipsandlocksuk.com did my hair and makeup and my bridesmaids hair. We had actually met years before briefly at university and she had been recommended to me by a mutual friend. She was absolutely wonderful, I couldn’t recommend her enough. She totally understood the style I wanted and I was thrilled with it all. She was also such a lovely person to have around on the morning of the wedding.
Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)
A family friend had recently set up a floral and venue styling company called Ether Events www.etherevents.com After speaking to Katie it was clear that she was the perfect person for the job. She listened to the colours I had chosen, pale peaches and creams to compliment the mint colour and my favourite flowers roses and peonies and then made excellent suggestions on what else to use. I trusted her completely and really left her and her colleague to it. I was thrilled with the result, it was stunning!
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
Lillibrooke Manor is an amazing venue and already had beautiful flowers, gardens and generally picturesque setting. Ether Events www.etherevents.com who also did our flowers put up the bunting I had made, the paper lanterns and then decorated with tea lights, lanterns and fairy lights. They set up a sweet table for us and then put flowers everywhere, It was beautiful!
Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?
We printed out lots of photos from our childhood to the present day and pegged them on string for people to look at. We tried to make sure that there were pictures of everyone.
Sparklers – cheap, fun and great photos opportunity
Little boxes filled with sweets for our name places/favours – great fun making them with my mum and family.
The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?
Sandra and Racheal, close family friend’s made our wedding cake for us. They are fantastic bakers and it was so personal for us to have friends make it for us. Racheal made a hummingbird cake with cream cheese icing for our cutting cake as this is Peter’s favourite cake. Sandra made chocolate, Lemon and vanilla cupcakes on a cupcake stand which were decorated with strawberries dipped in chocolate and lots of flowers. They were divine!
Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?
Seduce Band www.seducebands.com were absolutely fantastic! They had played at Peter’s cousins wedding 2 years before and had everyone dancing all night. We knew that they would create a wonderful atmosphere for our guests and they really made the evening so special for us.
Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:
Enjoy it! Remember what it’s all really about and as long as your friends and family are there you’ll have a wonderful day and everything else is just the icing on the cake!
What’s the best thing about being married?
We are so happy and lucky to have found each other and we just wanted to celebrate that with our friends and family. We are now looking forward to just enjoying spending time together and with our friends and family and exploring new places.
