“Our wedding was a natural, relaxed, outdoor garden party! We wanted a natural and relaxed day that we could spend as much time outside as possible. It was just like having a day with our best friends.

The marquee and church we decorated ourselves, the reception venue fitted our theme well so not much decorating required – it was all done by us! The venue didn’t need much at all. It is very rustic with brick walls and wooden beams, very barn like and just what we wanted. We put a few things up bit really didn’t need to over do it. The table decorations, marquee decorations and church decorations were all handmade by my stepmother using hessian, lace, ribbon and string in white and coral to match the bridesmaid dresses, flowers and men’s ties!”

Introduction & all images: Eyesome Photography, Yorkshire

This wedding was special in a number of ways – firstly, the bride and groom happen to both be friends of mine, and both particularly gentle and lovely human beings. They chose a venue which is actually a restaurant with a large garden. They pitched their own marquee, made their own decorations and kept the whole affair low-key and within a managed budget. As a result, there was no pressure, no pomp or ceremony, no high expectations or stress; just a totally relaxed, happy day amongst family and friends to celebrate their union.

The venue is fabulous. It’s called Christian’s Cafe and is actually situated alongside a thriving garden/nursery/art gallery (Crimple Hall) in a lovely suburb of South Harrogate. Christian is a very young entrepreneur business owner with a beautiful industrial-styled restaurant, who benefits from the beautiful gardens which surround him as a result of being located next to a garden centre! So no hotel, no catering manager, no events organiser, no formula, just a relaxed vibe, happy people, incredible food and a very pretty location.

The English Wedding Blog interview: Karen and Peter

How did you choose your photographer?

We had seen photographs of theirs before and thought they were amazing! Very natural which is what we wanted. We also knew Helen and Bob would be fantastic to have around on the day! – Lovely people who are fun and relaxed to be around 🙂 It was so nice to have them as part of the wedding, a lot of the time we didn’t even know they were taking photos. They just blended in so well and were amazing with all of the guests.
We also spent a lot of time at wedding fayres and most of the photographers we spoke to wanted to tell us how we should have the photos, Bob and Helen just asked what we would like and we left the rest up to them. It was so nice not to have to worry about it.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

We were more than pleased! they were just fantastic all round – more than we could have expected. Incredibly organised, so relaxed on the day, made sure all the photos we requested got done, and actually captured all the key moments without us having to specifically ask for this. We couldn’t have asked for more, and the quality of the images far exceeded our expectations!
Helen was so organised with places to take photos and how she wanted us to look. At the time I didn’t really understand why she wanted us to stand certain ways and didn’t think they would make good photos, but when we saw them, they were incredible and made so much sense. Some of the lighting that she captured completely transformed the moments.
Bob was amazing whilst we did the gents photos before the wedding, he was was really relaxed as I was very nervous and not good with the camera in my face. He just let us have a few drinks and knew when and where to be to get the moments we needed.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

We were just astounded! they were absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t wait to see the next photo!
I was blown away. The photos were incredible and as the pages turned the day flooded back to me and all of the emotions of the day came back. I couldn’t believe that they had been able to capture so much of the day and put it into a story so well.
The other thing was that it only took about a week, if that, for us to have the photos online, in the book and also Helen and Bob kindly gave us all of the photos for our own use. It was amazing. We didn’t even know what was going to happen next and it all just arrived with us. Amazing.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Perfect, Sunny, outdoor, relaxed, fun,

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Locally! based on recommendations!
We really didn’t have to look to far. A lot of our friends have got married and so we got a lot from them. We also did as much ourselves as we could. Our parents made all of the table decorations, runners, marque decorations etc. For us this made it more fun and a real family event. We were even lucky enough for our great friends Frank and Amanda kindly arrange cars for us so we didn’t have to worry about it. They also chauffeured us. It really was like this all the way through. We had more help than we could have imagined.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Spend money on the things that matter most!
We did a lot ourselves and had loads of help from the family. We were very lucky in that respect. One thing that saved us money was asking local people to help, for example we used two marquees from the local scouts group, this saved us over £1000. They were perfect for the day and we decorated it ourselves.
Our biggest tip is to ask people to help, don’t try and do it all yourselves, it really takes the stress off when others have jobs and they really feel part of the day.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

The music and the food were the biggest expense and we are so glad they were. We had a band from the Event Music Company who were amazing. We had a great meeting with them to got through what we wanted. they were so experienced that they knew what to do and when to do it and offered so much advice to make sure the evening went well. They singer was incredible and really got our guests involved.
Food for us is a big thing. The menu at Christians was brilliant. We eat there a lot anyway and love what they do. The fine dining is amazing and they really ailed it on the day. The other thing was the staff were amazing, they were part of the day and so helpful to all our guests.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We got most of it from Vista Print to be honest. It was simple, looked good and was cost effective. We then finished them ourselves with some nice details before we posted them out. The menus on the day were also done in the same way. We printed the order of service ourselves and then make them look nice with some ribbon we got locally.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

YES

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

Jewelry and hair accessories handmade by http://louloupuchalka.com/
Shoes from House of Fraser

And what did the groom wear?

Suits, shirts and ties from M&S
Shoes from Loakes
Socks from Hugo Boss

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

TwoBirds dresses. They looked stunning and were very versatile. Both wore the dresses individually and the colors were incredible. It was so hard to find the right dresses to go with our coral color scheme bt these ones fitted in perfectly.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

Professional –
Hair by Naomi at Wills & Parker – Harrogate – https://www.facebook.com/willsandparkerhairdressingharrogate/?fref=ts
Make up by Sarah Schofield – Leeds – https://www.facebook.com/SarahSchofieldWeddingMakeUp/?fref=ts

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Val Jackson at Garden Room Flowers – Harrogate – https://www.facebook.com/GardenRoomFlowers
The flowers were just amazing. Val was so so helpful and when Pete picked them up he didn’t think they were real! She made them so well and really catered to our budget. The button holes for the gents had the white rose of yorkshire and thistle in. They were stunning.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

Christians cafe – Victoria Sponge cake decorated with fruit and flowers! It was incredible – we didn’t eat too much of it on the day but it kept so well in the freezer we had the last bit 6 months after our wedding. Amazing.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

The Event Music Company – http://www.eventmusic.co.uk/. These guys were more than helpful and made the evening amazing. They knew what to play and when so that the mood was always high. The danceflloor was full all night and they really got everyone involved! Even the dance off was something to behold!

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Don’t get caught up in making the day big, elaborate and expensive. Concentrate on the things that will make the day work for you. We love food, family, music and being relaxed. We built the day around that and it worked perfectly. We didn’t have to do anything but enjoy our day.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Having so many amazing memories from the best day of our life. It was always be with us and it’s the start of a new adventure.
