Dave and Lucy’s wedding was an intimate and charming day, the loveliest of English weddings with a New York theme! They married exactly a year to the day since Dave proposed in the big apple. How romantic... I love their story as much as I love the beautiful images of their day, by Bristol wedding photographer Becky Male.
“You don’t always have to pay loads of money, shop around and ask friends and family for advice, esp friends who have recently got married. If you know friends that can help you then ask them.”
Lucy told me her dress was perfect – although finding it wasn’t as simple as she thought it would be: “I went to the bridal boutiques trying on all the wrong dresses because I thought I knew what I was looking for it was only towards the end of the session that I found my dress because my maid of honor could see how frustrated I was that I hadn’t found one yet and she grabbed a bunch that she liked (previously I would only try on ones that I liked the look of) and it was the first one she chose that I tried on and loved. As soon as I looked in the mirror my words were ‘I didn’t think I could look this nice’

How did you choose your photographer?
We were recommended Becky by our Sister in Law Rosie Parsons who is also a wedding photographer. Rosie recommended two different photographers, we checked out both websites and instantly knew that we wanted Becky. We couldn’t find one picture that we didn’t like on Becky’s website.
Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!
We were very pleased with Becky and the memories that she captured for us. The day was extremely busy and we could tell that it was busy for Becky but she didn’t stop, she took us everywhere in our venue to capture as many pictures as she could of us, she used every second that she could.
Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?
We were very happy, over the moon with our photos. Becky captured us at our best. We looked like we were having fun (which we were) and thats all that we wanted, photos of us and our guests having fun and enjoying the day.
Winford Manor Hotel
Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?
Magical, fun, memorable, best day of our lives.
Your wedding style or theme:
The Big Apple (New York) Dave proposed in New York Central Park exactly a year before our wedding date.
Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)
The wedding fayre at Bristol Zoo. I was also given a big stack of Wedding magazines from a friend of which I looked through and cut out everything that I liked for ideas.
What’s your top tip for saving money?
Do as much as you can by yourself, we made our own table plan. You don’t always have to pay loads of money, shop around and ask friends and family for advice, esp friends who have recently got married. If you know friends that can help you then ask them, our friend styled all of our hair for free.
… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?
Venue, Becky for our photographer
Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?
We found a wedding stationer at the Bristol Zoo Wedding Fayre, her name is Angela Reed and she has her items on display in Wedding Works on Gloucester Road, Bristol. We made our own wedding plan and name cards for the tables
Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:
Designer unknown, College Green Bridal.
Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!
My shoes I bought from New Look, and had my something blue as the ‘I DO’ stickers on the soles of my shoes. My other accessorises were gifts, My maid of Honor lent me her veil as she wore it to her wedding and our other close friend wore it for hers.
And what did the groom wear? Any recommendations for tailors?
We bought all the Groom mens suits from Marks and Spencer and the waist coats from Moss Bros, we didn’t want to hire as we wanted everyone to keep their suits as a reminder for taking part in our day.
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
I managed to get my Bridesmaid dresses from eBay, I wanted them all to have the same dress but in different colours and I could only find the specific colours I wanted on eBay
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
We all did our own make-up but our Friend Sam Burge who works for Grace Martin in Bath knidly styled mine and my bridesmaids hair free of charge.
Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)
Fiesta Flowers on Sandy Park Road, florist name Derek. We wanted our flowers to match our colour scheme we decided to choose flowers that were rarely used for weddings, like Gerbs and Kermits, we wanted to be different, colourful and fun.
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
We chose our venue because of its neutral tone, it was very white and basic which is just what we wanted. We wanted a natural setting. It was based in the country side and away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?
We loved doing what we could for our wedding but the only things that we did ourselves were the table plan and name cards, we did enjoy making them.
The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?
We tried a lot of cake shops for samples but none of them were are tasty as we hoped, our friends got married a few months earlier and chose their wedding cake from Marks and Spencer-it tasted very delicious so we decided to go with them and saved loads of money for something just as nice as from a cake shop.
Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?
We werent particularly pleased with the DJ that our venue supplied for us, so we would definitely recommend checking out a DJ for yourself. He didn’t play any requests even though we stated that thats what we wanted and he didn’t play any of the artists that we requested way in advance of our wedding date. that was a huge disappointment but we didn’t let it ruin our day.
We had a particular room which we set up as our Central Park room, the room consisted of a caricaturist, a sweet cart and a giant chess board.
We hired out the sweet cart also from Wedding Works on Gloucester Road and she was amazing, she even took our requests for some sweets that she didn’t have on her list and the amount was generous for the price we paid, the cart was well presented and decorated to the colour of our wedding.
We hired Chris Pavlick as our caracaturist who bought a fun element to our day and kept our guests entertained for a few hours during the break between the meal and the cutting of the cake.
We bought Toffee Apples as our wedding favours. which was fun as they arrived the morning of the day before our wedding, we also had to attach a tag to all 100 of them. sometimes you may need extra time to do little bits that you didn’t think would take as long as they do. So try to keep some spare time and try to do things in advance.
We wanted to have loads of fun stuff there to keep our guests happy and entertained.
On the day tips and advice:
Do not let the little things bother you. A few things went wrong for us on our day, things that we should have complained about afterwards but we decided to not let it bother us as we didn’t want that to be the memory of our day.
What’s the best thing about being married?
We love calling each other Husband and Wife.
