It’s been years since I was at Styal Lodge – I remember visiting when the English Wedding Blog was a baby (we’re 6 years old now! how time flies!) – and Styal stole my heart as a luxurious, blank canvas wedding venue. It’s kind of amazing to be showing you a stunning wedding from Styal Lodge today, courtesy of my lovely friend Jamie at Vickerstaff Photography.
The gorgeous couple who are English Wedding Blog’s favourite bride and groom today are Laura & Jon. They look amazing; they’ve shared a fabulous story of their day which you can read after all the images today. Laura told me they spent more on “small details which made a big impact. We hired our name in lights (MR & MRS Rothwell) from the Word is love which everyone commented on. Some people asked us where we were going to put the lights after the wedding. We were gutted we had to give them back!
“My wedding dress was one of the first ones I tried on. It wasn’t the style I wanted so I didn’t fall in love straight away. I think the style you want isn’t always the one that suits you best. After trying more and more dresses on I realized I actually did love the first and it was the perfect one.
The details of the day are breathtaking – I love the cake (and oh to see it in such an artistic photo is brilliant!) “Our wedding cake was made by Cakes by Beth. The detail on our wedding cake was amazing and Beth really understood the theme we were going for and brought this to life.” The images of the day are beautiful and timeless. Of Vickerstaff Photography Laura says, “The small touches he adds in to the Vickerstaff experience make his service really personal and is why I would highly recommend him as a photographer.”

Wedding photographer’s website:
How did you choose your photographer?
We wanted a photographer that would capture all the moments that made up our Wedding day. Particularly the moments we might miss! We spent a lot of time looking at different photographers websites and wanted a more natural documentary style photographer.
Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!
We knew from our initial first meeting with Jamie that he was the right man for the job. He seemed genuinely interested in our wedding from the moment we met him 18 months before our wedding and throughout the planning process. The small touches he adds in to the Vickerstaff experience make his service really personal and is why I would highly recommend him as a photographer. On the actual day he kept us to time and made sure the moments we wanted to be captured were (With some fight from us to get back to the party) Jamie is professional in all he does and was a pleasure to work with.
Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?
We’d booked a trip away for the weekend and it so happened whilst we were away our wedding photographs were ready. We sat down over a bottle of champagne and through our photos relived our day from start to finish. We were amazed by all the details Jamie had managed to capture that we had missed. It was great to see so many shots of the venue and our guests having a good time
Wedding venue: Styal Lodge
Wedding month: September
Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?
The most amazing day we will remember forever
Your wedding style or theme: Travel/Vintage.
We used the places we’d been as our table place names. One of our passions is going on holidays and visiting as many places as possible. Our top table was Sydney as we got engaged here on new years eve 2013.
Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)
I found a lot of our suppliers through Facebook and Instagram where suppliers had tagged themselves at our Venue. I also looked at the venue’s supplier recommendations and also googling local businesses.
What’s your top tip for saving money?
Get your wedding party involved. My Bridesmaids were fantastic in supporting me making things from table plans, place names etc. Also track everything you spend. We didn’t to begin with and the little things you buy all add to the cost.
… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?
Small details which made a big impact. We hired our name in lights (MR & MRS Rothwell) from the Word is love which everyone commented on. Some people asked us where we were going to put the lights after the wedding. We were gutted we had to give them back!
Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?
I’m lucky that one of my bridesmaids is a graphic designers. I gave her my ideas and she made it a reality for me. The effort she put in and the small details that she helped me make i.e personalized order of the days really made a difference.
Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?
My wedding dress was one of the first ones I tried on. It wasn’t the style I wanted so I didn’t fall in love straight away. I think the style you want isn’t always the one that suits you best. After trying more and more dresses on I realized I actually did love the first and it was the perfect one.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!
I got my veil from the same retailer as my dressed and it matched perfectly and was my favourite thing I wore on the day. I was lucky to receive some tiffany earrings from Jon on the day which added to the sparkle.
And what did the groom wear? Any recommendations for tailors?
Jon wore a navy tails suit with a tweed waistcoat. It was hired from Whitfield and Ward in Wilmslow. The team there were excellent and really helpful in choosing and matching colours.
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
Our bridesmaids looked truly stunning. They were dressed in the multi-wrap dresses from Eliza and Ethan which were perfect as suited all shapes. They also came in one size which was ideal as there was little alteration costs and one of my bridesmaids gave birth two weeks before the wedding!!
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
We hired the professionals!! I wanted to take the stress away from the morning and it isn’t often you get the opportunity to be pampered. We had Liz Clough do our make up, and a salon in Altrincham did our hair (House of Finesse) The three girls came to the house where we were getting ready and they really added to the fun we had getting ready in the morning
Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)
We wanted our flowers to be really simple but also fit in with the Venue’s theme. We went for gypsophaelia throughout which looked amazing on the photos and actually are one of the cheaper flowers but still look as effective. JN Flowers provided all the flowers for our wedding. Jill was amazing throughout and really listened to what we wanted. We were amazed with the flowers on the day.
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
We found the styling of our wedding much simpler once we had decided on a theme as it helped us pull all our decorations together. With having a travel theme we could use vintage suitcases, globes etc to really emphasise that theme. I think Styal is an amazing venue with out too much over decoration but we used flowers over the windows to really add a wow factor to the day.
Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?
I really enjoyed making all the things for the wedding, however I did have one of my bridesmaids who is a graphic designer to really keep me on track and help. We made all the favours, order of the day and table names. Making your own things really allows you to design exactly the things you want for your wedding
The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?
We went for a bark style wedding cake with 4 tiers dressed with gyposophaelia. We had four different flavours, vanilla sponge, limoncello sponge, double chocolate fudge and fruit. We were also quite greedy and opted to have a cheese cake as well. We ordered the cheese cake from Marks & Spencers to save on cost. Our wedding cake was made by Cakes by Beth. The detail on our wedding cake was amazing and Beth really understood the theme we were going for and brought this to life.
Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?
We hired a string quartet for the ceremony and drinks reception and we were so glad we did. Everyone commented on how nice they were as opposed to just playing music during the ceremony. The dotted Crotchets were a great supplier and always on hand to answer any questions. For the evening reception we hired Gillan Edgar a 3 piece band. One of my biggest fears about the day was that no body would be up dancing. Gillan really got the party started and we were so glad we chose him.
On the day tips and advice:
It’s the two pieces of advice that everyone told me. 1) Don’t worry about the weather. I checked BBC weather hourly the week before the wedding and it changed every hour!! It rained a bit on our wedding day but it honestly doesn’t make a difference to the day. Don’t let it ruin the build up to the day. 2) The day goes far too quick. It really does! Make sure you enjoy every second because before you know it the day is over.
What’s the best thing about being married?
We both say that nothing has really changed in our relationship since we’ve been married. However we both have the most amazing memories from the day that we will remember forever.
