What could be lovelier for a Sunday afternoon than a screen full of glorious wedding cakes?! Discover the top trends for 2015 in this enlightening article written especially for us by Carolyn, wedding coordinator from our sponsor The Pavilion at Lane End. I hope you find it really useful… I’ve really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful cake pics!
I recently had the rare opportunity to bend the ear and pick the brain of a top class wedding cake designer who displayed some of her wonderful creations at one of our recent Wedding Open Days. It was too good an opportunity to miss, so I just delved in and got it from the horse’s mouth – this year’s top trends.
Soft pastels are definitely an in-demand colour for weddings in 2015. Think soft lemon, pearl, pistachio, orchid tint. Looking at cakes on Pinterest, one idea that seems to be quite popular is choosing a different shade for each layer, creating a wedding cake with a colour gradient from light to dark.
The colour trends for weddings in 2015 range from soft pastels to bold colours. Colour technology experts Pantone UK recently announced their fashion colours for spring 2015, which range from soft colours like glacier grey and custard to bolder colours such as lucid green and scuba blue.
It’s always been fashionable to dress a wedding cake in flowers – whether it’s fresh flowers, satin or silk. However, the internet (especially Pinterest) seems to be going mad with pictures of wedding cakes covered in the most beautiful sugar-paste flowers in all shades and shapes. This seems to be a really important wedding trend for the next twelve months.
Personally I think this is a lovely touch for any wedding cake. Edible lace creates a delicate vintage effect that is just perfect for classic weddings. The cake geek website compares the lace effect and detailed piping with the Edwardian era and its luxurious wedding cakes. This trend works with many styles from classic tiered ivory cakes to those more modern cakes with bright and bold coloured bases.
This trend caught on quickly and is set to be a strong influence for 2015 weddings. Anything from a favourite travel destination to the bridal couple’s initials, a favourite pet or even a first home, couples use the wedding cake to reflect something personal and close to their hearts.
The popular BBC TV show – The Big British Bake Off – somehow turned us all overnight into critics. We give marks for presentation and we simply won’t tolerate for a soggy base! For this reason The Showstopper wedding cake is set to be big in 2015.
The decadent French croqembouche is back in fashion – and while some might say it was never out of fashion – it certainly is a showstopper!
