Sometimes it seems wedding blogs focus too much on the ‘average’ bride and groom – but what is average? And hell, isn’t life a billion times more fun when we spend it with couples who have brilliant personalities and a great sense of fun? The English Wedding Blog will never be just about averages; it’s important to me to share real weddings, with real people. Because it’s YOU who make the blog a wonderfully exciting place to be!
With that in mind I bring you today’s Somerset wedding and introduce gorgeous couple Lesley and John. They’re amazing and I’ve fallen head over heels in love with their wedding photos! Lesley rocks an off-the-shoulder lace wedding dress and her smile is infectious. John looks proud as punch and together they just make the most adorable couple. Images are by lovely Kelly J Photography. Enjoy!

We had the best party ever!
What was your reaction to seeing your wedding photos for the first time?
They were amazing, I didn’t think I could look so good!! 🙂
Your wedding style and theme:
We had a fairly traditional service, opted for a peacock colour scheme and the whole day was very informal
Any happy tears on the day?
How long did you spend planning your wedding?
3 months approx
Best bit of budget advice?
Keep it local and remember your friends’ talents can come in very useful
Wedding invitations and on the day stationery:
These were all home made by close friend Linda Smith (also our witness)
Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?
Once I had it altered it was perfect. I bought from ebay and it was very cheap but didn’t look it!
Glitz and sparkle: the bride’s accessories:
As a mature bride I kept it very simple, a small feather clip in my hair and pearl necklace and earrings
The groom wore:
A navy suit, white shirt. Peacock blue tie and pocket handkerchief
Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?
I had 2 matrons of honour. Kelly wore a bright peacock blue knee length chiffon dress and our best man’s wife Gill wore a knee length navy chiffon dress.
Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?
I tried a professional but came home and redid it myself!
Our flowers were arranged by Linda Smith as above
General styling – did your venue need much decoration?
The hotel took care of all that and did a fantastic job
The wedding cake: traditional or quirky?
Traditional 2 tier with a peacock twist
We hired a local band “Stamp” who play mostly southern rock. Val who is a singer with the band sang as I made my entrance and she was also the Registrar performing the service. They played music for the whole event and also their dog “Girlie” performed to “werewolves of London”
On the day tips and advice:
It’s about the marriage… the day is about enjoying the company of friends and family who you choose to share it with.
Don’t get hung up on minor details and just enjoy it! What’s the worst that can happen anyway?
What’s the best thing about being married?
I have loved John all my life but only met him 6 years ago. There would be no reason for us to get married other than we are soul mates and wanted to cement our relationship in the company of all the people we love.
