Anna and Adam’s beautiful English wedding from Coltsfoot Country Retreat

Pastel roses, creatively stamped luggage labels, birdcages, candles and wicker hearts… oh, and Spiderman. Anna and Adam’s beautiful English wedding is both inspiring and achievable – something I always try to show on the blog. It’s important to me that you can take ideas from every wedding featured, and use those ideas to create your own wedding styling.

Wedding venue:

Coltsfoot Country Retreat, Datchworth, Hertfordshire

Wedding photographer:

Dominic Whiten

Invitations and stationery:

Our wedding invitations were from Debenhams. I made my own table seating plan cards and displayed them on a rustic heart. The bridesmaids and I made the place name cards using luggage tags and a stamp set bought from eBay.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I saw a picture of it in Wedding Ideas and then found a local retailer, The White Wardrobe in Hitchin, who got it from the designer. My dress is a Justin Alexander tea length dress with a lace and beaded bodice, satin waistband and full skirt. It cost £1200 but is worth every penny! I didn’t want to take it off. I just wanted to stand in front of the mirror and twirl!

Glitz and sparkle: the bride’s accessories:

I wore a tiara, bracelet and earrings all from The Tiara Bar in Nottingham, all handmade bespoke designs. My shoes are by Benjamin Adams and I wore Ted Baker underwear

The groom wore:

Military blues. Who can resist a man in uniform??

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

We shopped around for ages to find something to suit them all. Some dresses were too long, too short, too expensive or just not right. Eventually we found their dress in a small boutique in Hitchin called Rhubarb. They were £70 each but we managed to buy them online from TFNC for £45 each.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

It was important to both me and my bridesmaids to look ourselves so we all did our own makeup. I also did my mum’s makeup with help from the bridesmaids.

A family friend did my hair for me. I had it loosely curled and half up, half down. Again it was important to me to look myself and not have something completely different for my wedding.

Wedding flowers:

All the flowers were provided by Carole Smith Florist from Stevenage. Carole also provided the beautiful cream lace sashes for the chairs and wicker hearts.

The ceremony:

We had a civil ceremony and chose music that was relevant to us and that we enjoy listening to. A friend who is a pianist made a recording of Clair de Lune for me to walk down the aisle to.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We bought bird cages and jugs for the table flowers and heart shaped candle holders for the windowsills and elsewhere. We also had lots of candles outside. We hired some large wicker hearts and we made the table name cards using luggage tags and these were pegged to the wine glasses.

We had a Candy Bar Buffet by Glitzy Occasions in Letchworth. We had a range of old fashioned sweets which our guests really enjoyed.

The wedding cake: traditional or quirky?

The wedding cake was from Marks & Spencer, a 3 tier white chocolate swirl wedding cake. We simply added a fresh flower wedding topper and it looked stunning. It was very tasty too.

Entertainment:

The Soul Man – he provided the disco and also sang 2 live sets during the evening. Adam chose the first dance and it was Luther Vandross, So Amazing. The Soul Man sang this for us.

On the day tips and advice:

  • Be calm, be organised, delegate and be yourself
  • Write speeches early and choose a supportive and helpful best man and usher
  • Use eBay – they sell everything. Visit wedding fayres to get ideas and negotiate – don’t be afraid to ask for discounts or negotiate rates
  • Shop around, give yourself plenty of time and don’t make rash decisions
  • Eat, dance, smile and enjoy every moment!
