I’m taking no responsibility for this… but are men’s brains “wired differently” to forget special dates?

Of all the press releases which come flooding into my inbox every week, there’s only one I’ll always read and enjoy. The boys from Socked write some genuinely funny blog posts I’m very pleased to be able to share with you. And today’s raises a little chuckle… it’s not necessarily true (feel free to argue by commenting below!) but you might just, possibly, know a guy who fits today’s guest blog. Sit back and enjoy! Here’s the question:

Are men genetically predisposed to miss those important anniversaries?

Men are more likely to miss significant dates such as Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and birthdays thanks to the way that they store memories, according to research.

Instead, they are more likely to know the names of World Cup winners, the make and registration number of their first car, and the kind of useless information that wins pub quizzes.

According to researchers, men use different genes to women when they come to make connections needed to store long-term memories, making men better at what they term “tactical” memories such as travel directions; while women tend to have “emotional” memories, such as special dates and anniversaries.

“This certainly explains a lot,” says Mark Hall, Gentleman Creation Officer at sock subscription service socked.co.uk, “most men catch hell for forgetting these simple things, but it’s really not their fault.

“When she gets that last-minute bunch of flowers and dented box of chocolates that were clearly bought from the garage down the road on Valentine’s Day, it’s obviously because of genetic differences,” said Hall.

“However, we at Socked.co.uk offer the aspiring gentleman free tips on how to remember these important dates. Just by being more organised, there’s no need to disappoint your partner.”

According to a survey carried out by Socked.co.uk, the top things men forget in relationships are:

  • Birthdays
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Anniversaries
  • “What did I just say?”
  • Where they left the car keys
  • Partner’s dress size
  • Simple instructions on not burning the dinner
  • Paying bills on time
  • Partner’s choice of wedding song
  • Remembering to come home from work, and not to go to the pub

“Genes or otherwise, a gentleman simply needs to make small changes to his behaviour and he’ll reap the rewards,” said Hall. “Convert those emotional memories to tactical ones, and the battle’s half won.”

“Men may be forgetful animals, but at least a sock subscription takes one thing off their mind, with a regular delivery of socks to their door. That might just leave enough space in their heads to remember February the 14th.”

Comments then, anyone?! Claire xxx

Oh! And do have a look at the blog over at socked.co.uk/journal – a very entertaining guide to life in general for men. Includes articles “how to hold a gun” and “how to hold a gnu”. Worth reading, because the two are apparently very different.

Haha – great comment Sara. I wonder if you’re the exception which proves the rule? 😉

This did make me laugh. It’s very unlikely that it’s just men that it’s true for although my partner has a terrible memory, he’ll forget what he’s just eaten, he’ll forget a persons name straight away and he’ll even forget what film we went to see at the cinema about two minutes after it finishes… He’ll remember the number from his debit card that expired 3 years ago however, and the number plate from his dad’s old car that he hasn’t had since the 90’s. He just so happens to be the most intelligent person I know, he designs machines and as an engineer he’s amazing with numbers.. so perhaps there’s something more to it than being a “man”, perhaps if you’re bad with short term memories you’re also a bit of a genius.. :p

Ooh nice response Kelly – you might be on to something there! (Or has your partner hijacked your laptop and submitted this comment himself?!)
      Love it – great answer.

Rubbish! They can remember anything if it’s important enough to them…….. then they just rely on us to do the rest…….which, if you’re as soft as me, you do! xx

Is that why I have so many socks – I now have two sock drawers and they are both full. Can’t remember where they are though….

Ah… I think you should read what Kelly said about men with poor memories being geniuses. It definitely applies 😉
Either that or I inherited my incredible mind from the other side of the family…? Could be…

  • Very intrigued to know what a Gentlemen creation officer is! Torn between an image of the old school Saville Row tailor with mini moustache and the dreaded tape measure and a mad scientist with giant vats full of clones trying to create gentlemen in the lab. Though I suspect it may be neither!

Have to apologise for going all geek but have been watching Wonders of Life so it’s probably more allowable while that’s on tv at least. The article is right though, there are differences in memory due to gender.

Ooh Nathan, I’m off to investigate your links, they look fab (including the Script Fonts post on your blog!)
I can picture a Gentlemen creation officer being a bit like the shopkeeper out of Mr Benn. You should read the Socked blog, it’s hilarious and explains the lot 🙂

Men’s brains are definitely wired differently… It takes us one time to forget the date, to then never forget it for the rest of our lives.

what do you think?
