What will your first dance song be?

Hello again everyone, it’s lovely and quiet here today and I’m enjoying a little time playing with my calligraphy pens to create new wedding readings, poems and gifts for Christmas. But I need your help! What have you chosen for your first dance song?

I’d like to write a collection of first dance songs in calligraphy but I’m not the world’s biggest Michael Buble fan… my tastes run more to the alternative!

I asked on facebook last week and had some fantastic suggestions from friends with very cool taste in music! See the full list here. I ended up printing and writing out some Johnny Cash and Elvis lyrics, both of which I’d never heard before. Thank you to Bekki and Zoe for suggesting those! I also have Green Day (who’d have thought?!) and some more Van Morrison on my list to write – thanks to Chris and Catriona for those two.

So – do we have any more ideas? Or are you struggling to find a first dance song for your big day? If I had to choose I know I’d struggle… but as far as wedding priorities go it would be close to the top of my list for us to agree a playlist before anything else (dress, venue…)

We’re having One Day Like This by Elbow which is quite popular at the moment, but it’s an important song to us and it would feel wrong choosing anything else!

      Hi Nikki,
I think this song has to be next on my list. It’s beautiful and I agree if it means a lot to you both then you absolutely have to have it.

We had Better by Tom Baxter – i haven’t heard anyone else use this before, but it seemed perfect for us 🙂

Amy that’s such a romantic song. I’ve just been watching the video on YouTube. I haven’t heard of Tom Baxter so it’s lovely to discover someone new! Thank you for sharing 🙂

We had Beyonce’s “Halo” but we found a version of it that was sung by Florence and the Machine, who we love! This is the only song that really makes me cry so we had to choose it 🙂

Love that idea Emma (especially the Florence and the Machine version!) I hope if you cried during your first dance they were happy tears you’ll remember forever. Bet you did 🙂

Ah… Emma I’ve just put two and two together, as I’m looking at you on my screen right now! As I read through your notes about the string quartet, and Michael Jackson to Muse, and then Florence, it clicked!
I don’t know where to start with your wedding feature – there’s so much beauty in the day and the images I could spend hours blogging your big day!
Expect to see yourself smiling back from these pages on the 20th or 21st 🙂

We did a tap dance to ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’. Given that neither of us had ever danced before and my husband is a very reserved person, it was quite a challenge! Even more so on The Day because my mother-in-law collapsed just after our wedding breakfast and we had a tense hour waiting for the ambulance to arrive and for the medics to examine her. Thankfully, it was nothing serious but we were both very shaken and I’m not sure how we managed to get through the rest of the evening, let alone the dance. Because we weren’t able to enjoy the evening we’ve decided to celebrate my husband’s big birthday next summer by recreating the wedding celebrations: I will wear The Dress, we’ll feast on the uncut tier of the wedding cake and – yes, you’ve guessed it – we’ll be tapping to a brand new routine!

Pamela – you brave lady. Congratulations by the way! I think there is a story to be had here, that in the end it’s all about family and love and at the end of the day you’re married. I read on your blog that you like using the words, “my husband” – that’s the thing. Once the big day is done, you have a husband forever.
I’m glad John’s mum was OK in the end, and I can’t imagine how upsetting it must have been for you both when she was taken ill. You were very brave to carry on with everything as you did.
The birthday idea is a good one! From what you say I doubt John’s celebrated a birthday by tapdancing before!
      Lots of love,

Mrs Moore – wow, I am so impressed with your unique idea of doing a tap dance. What a shock on your wedding day, you must have been so relieved it wasn’t serious. It’s a great idea to continue your celebrations for another special occasion.
We waltzed to Moon River by the late, great Andy Williams – just like Flavia and Louis did last Saturday night on Strictly Come Dancing, but I can’t image the judges scores would have been quite so high for us! x
